The Other Bill

I'm about to predict today's media cycle: The passport story just got much less interesting, since it's no longer focused on just one candidate (now it's about security and process, and there's no longer the tantalizing possibility of a Watergate-ish conspiracy against Barack Obama), and also, for the first time in a few days, this is an actual feel-good story: Bill Richardson endorsed Obama. It's different from how the race speech was a feel-good story, because that was a serious story that people could still feel good about standing behind. This is almost like an exhalation, a tension break, a political sorbet — a feel-good story about how two former opponents who always liked each other are now coming together out of a common hope and dream and sense of real kinship, and they're pals.

This was the first light moment of the campaign in ages, since before the Ohio/Texas primary. Obama has been walking a harsher path since then — under tougher scrutiny from the press, dealing with questions about Rezko, dealing with questions about his momentum, then the controversy over Jeremiah Wright that flipped him into overdrive, first with his media blitz addressing Wright's statements and then with his seminal speech on race earlier this week, for which he generally won raves but not necessarily the consensus that it made his path to the nomination any easier (see the "typical white person" comment and how that was pounced upon). But here — finally! — it felt like old times (remember the Kennedys? Remember Ted Kennedy feeling chaaaange in the air?).

Obama owes all that to Bill — the Other Bill, the one that has been out of sight for the past few months while he grew a beard, got a tan, and lost the worried, fretful look of someone trailing badly on the campaign trail. This Bill Richardson was a man of the people, your buddy at the bar or neighborhood barbecue, for that matter — and the focus of all that charm was directed straight at America, on behalf of Barack Obama.

The whole thing did wonders to humanize Obama. Yes, humanize — the candidate always described as "cool" but not in a Fonzie way, in an above-it-all-preternaturally-composed-almost-like-Dakota-Fanning way. He is described as seeming to be talking from 30,000 feet, and he's often serious, mostly because he's running for president and, well, that's a serious business. Come on, people, there are posterized versions of him looking upward into the distance all over facebook. Yesterday on Illinois radio Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr.,his national campaign co-chair, compared him to a "deity." This is not the guy you're going to sit down and have a beer with, okay?

But you would with Bill Richardson — hell, with Bill Richardson you'd have a kegger. And that rubbed off on Obama This speech showed Obama as a pal, a real pal, to a guy who looks so much like one himself. The kind of pal who would, say, whisper the answer to you during a test &mdah; an amazing anecdote, and one which brought out Obama's equally amazing smile, one of his best assets that really doesn't come out all that much. That smile broke the serious look on Obama's face and shook him out of his "attentive listening" pose, bringing him into that moment with an honest-to-God grin, which made it a moment he shared with the audience. You could hear it in the crowd (okay, let's be serious, it's an Obama rally, you can ALWAYS hear it in the crowd. But still.) Most importantly, it took Obama down off that high perch he's grown accustomed to. The whole moment was warm and congenial and personal, and that all spilled over to Obama in an incredibly flattering way.

To be honest, I had my doubts about the effect of this endorsement, with Richardson having waited so long to bequeath. Now, after that speech, I think it's going to be a huge boon for Obama — it changed the tone at a time when he really, really needed that tone changed. It also introduces a new potential storyline — did you notice how great they looked together? There they were, presented as an extremely likable pairing...and a pretty nice-looking ticket (though incredibly risky in practical terms based on their combined average skin color). But it was a nice, uplifting, feel-good moment of the campaign — and, I suspect, a welcome change from the grim tone of late. And that "Katrina!" moment is going to be a hit on YouTube. You wait.

I thought the lovely Rachel was a Hillary fan? Did I miss something here?

HRC wants it both ways.

Bill Richardson should have had the beard and the tan while running for the nomination, he look himself assured and more relaxed not to mention younger.

I've never looked at any politician as someone I've wanted to "have a beer with". And, I think most people feel that way. That "have a beer" silliness is a completely media-generated canard. To go along with so many of their other urban legends ("Republicans are always perceived to be better on national security". "Democrats are always perceived as the party that raises your taxes." I've got a million of 'em.)

What I think is even more interesting than the endorsement itself is the Clinton Camp's hyperventilating response to it. Penn saying that it's not important now, but, if it had happened a few weeks ago.... Or Carville comparing Richardson to Judas.

These people are getting absolutely HILARIOUS as they go through their death throes! Obama doesn't need any SNL skits that support him. What he's getting from his opposition is funny enough!

In the meantime, it was nice for Obama to get Richardson's endorsement, but it wasn't some life-saving moment for his campaign. He has already been having a tsunami of super-delegates coming over to his camp ever since Super Tuesday. And that trend hasn't abated, even when he's hit a rough patch. Speaking of which, tracking polls have shown that he was starting to come out of his dip in the polls right after his speech last Tuesday and the huge, positive reaction to it.

That's a good sign for the fall. Obama is a guy who can take a hit, pull himself back up and get right back into the fray. Richardson can recognize a good thing when he sees it. Which is why he finally joined his neighboring governor, Janet Napolitano of AZ, and endorsed him.

I agree Rachel. The endorsement from Bill Richardson was exactly what the doctor ordered: A supposed Clinton man, a super delegate, a man with national security credentials, a Hispanic, and, last but not least, a nice guy. Talk about a perfect ticket.

Richardon's endorsement helps not only Obama but the superdelegates as well. He has provided major, public cover for those who want to switch from Clinton. "Country over loyalty" is the Richardson mantra that's now theirs to use. In a cockeye way this is like the support of Nixon finally giving way in his last days as Constitution trumped personal loyalty. KEEP SMILING, BARACK!

Yeah, so what if New Mexico went for Senator Clinton? No need to be _consistent_ when it come sto enforcing rules and guidelines.

I laughed when Richardson recounted how Obama had whispered Katrina to him to help him during the debate. It made me like Richarson and it reminded me of Obama's sense of humor which brought out as you said his "amazing smile" I like when they show Obama pouring hot sauce on his food in a New Orleans restaurant while the staff watches him and seeing him play with his kids. I think he is a kind , intelligent and authentic man and I love to watch him in real moments like this. It's exactly like you said.

Richardson is one smart cookie. His books "Between Worlds" and "Leading by Example" are brilliant. Obama is simply inspiring. Obama and Richardson would go together like fire and wind.

I for one have been previously critical of you because I believed you were a hook-line and sinker Hillary supporter. I think I misunderstood.

As for how much the endorsement helps Obama, I think it does change the narrative at this junture and may act as a spur to other superdelegates to commit to Obama. However, I'm not sure it will help him in the next primary contests.

Richardson showed great wisdom and courage by endorsing Obama. It's gratifying to see someone stick it to Bill and Hillary.

It's time for prima donna John Edwards to stop combing his hair and endorse Obama already

If Bill Richardson would have run for Pres with the beard and the tan and the big smile,

he would have gotten A LOT of attention.

I don't drink beer.

and I'm really not interested in having a cocktail with any candidate.

would I love the chance to meet them? sure.

Your comparison to Dakota Fanning is ridiculous, as the whole "freaky" part about Dakota fanning is that she is a CHILD. She is under the control of her parents and agent and manager. That's creepy.

Obama is a grown man, and speaks and acts from his own head and heart.

Damning with faint praise? A subversive post, a strained attempt to reintate your journalistic credibilty after shilling for Billary all this time. Trying to be relevant? Way too condescending.

As a fan of the "wit and wisdom" of Rachel Sklar, not to mention the warrior-like parrying of thrusts in her direction, the, uh, "intensity" of many of the comments to her posts always surprises me. Now she doesn't need me to defend her (see above about warrior-like parrying), but I just might a bit anyhow. She does in face say that she's just commenting on media and political events as she perceives them. Of course, we all perceive things through our own eyes, ears and brains, so perhaps as a professional woman, she may be a little more attentive to perceived media affronts to/biases against HRC.

I'm also disturbed by the degree of vitriol I frequently see in comments on the Huff Post between HRC and Obama supporters. I happen to agree that the original Bill went over the top this past weekend and HRC herself did too with her recent comment about the Commander in Chief test (by the way, I'm sending the Obama campaign my copy of Barron's How to Prepare for the Commander in Chief test), but despite those lapses, I do believe either HRC or Obama would make a good president. This hostility between Democratic camps seems to be more than opening a door for the Republicans; incredibly, McCain is now ahead of both HRC and Obama in the latest Gallup poll. WE CANNOT AFFORD another Republican administration! Talk about moral hazard (bailing people out when they get hurt by their own risky behavior)! How could we as a country let the Republicans do to our country what they've done over the past seven years and then elect them again???

I disagree about the passport story, Rachel... It's simply good cover to breach ALL the candidates' passport files, to muddy the waters if the breaches are discovered.

As to Bill Richardson, the value of his endorsement is tripled by the fact that he, of all the former candidates, is the one best acquainted with the "real" Hillary... and it's something that he has, in good conscience, rejected, despite enormous pressure not to do so.

This is masterful writing because at the end I don't know if it was a massive elbow to Obama or an air kiss.

To say this was masterful writing is a little over the top but it is certainly the best Ms.Sklar has done to date.

I think she has written better articles. This one smacks a little too much of Obama love. He is once again being hoisted above the status of; human being.

With any luck Obama will have the good sense to name Bill Richardson his VP. Can anyone imagine an administration with two genuinely decent human beings running it? I can't begin to describe just how much I like Richardson and he'd sure do a great deal to help with our image in Latin America. He's one of the few people in a leadership roll that seems to really understand the issues facing people on both sides of the border.

Why did Sen. Obama have his arms folded beside Gov. Richardson? Isn't that protective body language, implying trust issues?

there are others dissecting the body language.

Some have gone so far as to call it further proof of his racism and elitism.

It is so beyond ridiculous at this point.

Anyone who hates Obama is NOT going to vote for him. I hardly think those people are going to have much influence on anyone else's vote. They sound like middle school children

There are at least, an equal number of Hillary haters. Body language is not to be written off, entirely. But it's far from being an exact science. Look at bush's body language. Arrogant, strutting, fake tough guy pose. It points directly to bush's character.

Dude, I was at the rally in P-town this morning and it was absolutely off the hook. Portland ("Little Beirut" to George H.W.) was ready to lavish Barack with love and praise no matter what he said - he could have gotten up there, said three words and walked offstage and there would still have been multiple orgasms in the crowd.

That said, the room really did light right up as soon as Bill walked out. I caught the news that he would be endorsing before I left this morning to stand in line, but most people weren't expecting it and it was such a triumphant moment for everyone there. It felt like his campaign had been completely renewed after a really tough week. Everyone in Portland apparently LOVED The Race Speech, by the way - that mention was one of the biggest applause lines of the event.. Seems like he may have done the impossible and (mostly) converted the three-point play on the egregious foul.

Besides, I'm sure the Wright story did some damage, but the more the media wants to keep talking about it, the more people will come out to defend Rev. Wright - as noted on Huff Post, the longer, in-context versions of a lot of these sermons are on YouTube now and they're cotton candy compared to the distortions they ran on the news. Surely a letter campaign to 60 Min or AC360 could convince 'em to do a review of the media's coverage of the issue sometime before November - they'd end up looking like the good guys for "bringing it to light"! The more I see, The more it seems like Rev. Wright was not a lunatic-fringe kind of guy. The more the media picks the scab on this one, the more people are going to start standing up for him - especially once it becomes clear that Obama is still going to be the Dem nominee, Hillary's efforts notwithstanding.

Obama '08!

PS: oh yeah, and Rachel? Much to my shame, I think Bill with the goatee is kind of hott too.
