Clinton On Obama

The New York Times reports that a top aide to Barack Obama accused former President Bill Clinton of employing "divisive attacks" to promote his wife's candidacy:

As Senator Barack Obama folded his arms and looked on, one of his leading military advisers forcefully defended Mr. Obama's patriotism here Saturday and accused former President Bill Clinton of trying to employ "divisive attacks" to promote his wife's presidential candidacy.

Mr. Clinton, in a speech to voters in North Carolina on Friday, said "it would be a great thing if we had an election year where you had two people who loved this country and were devoted to the interest of this country."

At a town meeting here Saturday, retired Air Force Gen. Merrill A. McPeak, who is a co-chairman of Mr. Obama's campaign, read the quote from Mr. Clinton. A few members of the audience gasped and hissed at the former president's words.

"Let me say first, we will have such an election this year because both Barack Obama and John McCain are great patriots who love this country and are devoted to it -- so is Hillary Clinton," General McPeak said, speaking over loud applause. "Any suggestion to the contrary is flat wrong."

Mr. Obama, on his first trip to Oregon before the state's primary on May 13, did not address the comments from Mr. Clinton. He stood a few feet away from the retired general as he made his remarks before a crowd of more than 1,500 people in a Medford community center.

Keep reading the New York Times report.

The Clinton campaign has reined in the former president in the past after he made other similarly divisive remarks, including:

Calling Obama's Iraq War claims a "fairy tale":

"Give me a break. This whole thing is the biggest fairy tale I've ever seen," Clinton had said in accusing Obama of distorting his stance on the war.

Telling Charlie Rose that a vote for Obama would be like "rolling the dice":

In a hard-changing interview with Charlie Rose tonight, Bill Clinton said Americans who are prepared to choose someone with less experience, are prepared to "roll the dice" about the future of America. "It's less predictable, isn't it? When is the last time we elected a president based on one year of service before he's running?"

"What do you want to do -- whether you think it matters that, I mean, in theory, no experience matters," Clinton said. "In theory, we could find someone who is a gifted television commentators and let them run. They'd have only one year less experience in national politics..."

The Clintons are truly Republican Hacks, A vote for Hillary is a vote for the Republican party. Thats just the plain truth. Hillary if she doesn't read the bills she signs her name to, how in the world can she be trusted to know anything pertaining to the American people.
Hillary is so encrusted with Corporate America she works against the interest of the American people, her voting record speaks for itself. One who can fool some of the people , can fool those same people all of the time. Fool me once shame on you, Fool me twice shame on me!

OK: just answer this, please. Inasmuch as Hillary and Obama's voting records are exactly the same, why is she a republican hack and he a democratic savior?

I'll help you out here.

hillary has been working on becoming president for 10 years.

In order to appear macho and commander-like, hillary (without bothering to consult the intelligence report) voted to kill 4000 US soldiers and piss away 2 trillion dollars that the US had to borrow from Communist China.

Once the tragic war was started by clinton's ignorance, Senator Obama and others had to act so that the soldiers in the field had everything that they needed.

There were certainly others who were duped along with clinton - but these others are not running for POTUS

Obama is not a " Savior, he is just a man running for office, Hillary is not a Democrat she is a Republican from head to toe. When a so-called Democrat graces the likes of a Republican like McCain, she truly is a hack. People in politics Lie, Cheat, Steal, and do other things as well, none of them are angels. People continue to vote aganist there own best interest.

The 'HATERS' have their bobble heads in motion this morning! Wondering, are these the same ones who tore Bill Clinton a new one back in the day? They are sure coming to his defense against Obama now, which side of the fence are they on now? Is this what they call sticking together like wet rice?

He is the one betraying his own party by endorsing McCain. Nobody is betraying him. I am an African American who who always defended and voted for Bill Clinton. Now I feel he is the one who has betrayed African Americans and the democratic party. Bill Clinton was a president, not a king. We don't OWE him loyalty even when he acts like a monster.

You know the Clinton campaign has hit rock bottom when they have to bring out Bill waving an American flag. The new poster boy for real patriots. Too funny.

Maybe I am in the minority here, but it seems to me I have seen Sen. Obama pointing a finger in many of the pictures that have been presented on him on the stump. We all know GW is not much in getting out a speech and I don't remember him pointing a finger very often. Must be a mannerism or something that only a good speaker uses.

As for the patriotic nonesense, everyone knows that is funny. Heck, Sen. Obama had a mass of flags behind him a few days ago when he gave his race speech. How could anyone question his patriotism when he had that many flags (think there more than six and maybe up to ten or so) behind him. Don't think I have ever seen GW with more than one flag lapel pin on at a time. Six or more flags must mean Sen. Obama is six or more times more patriotic than GW and we all now that GW is extremely patriotic.

Unfortunately, he ruined Al Gore's landslide in 2000 and now will be responsible for his wife's demise in the campaign.

As much as I detest the "new" Clintons, I have to correct something:

Al Gore followed the advice of his campaign people and intentionally distanced himself from Bill during the campaign.

Had he not, we'd live in a VERY different country today.

Remember -- the election was stolen. One MIGHT debate why it was close enough to steal, but the theft is where the blame belongs. That is a much stronger indictment than misjudgment. Why are Bush &Co always given a pass?

Tell me you kidding, right? Al Gore didn't lose the election for himself in 2000? He didn't sigh during debates or suddenly decide to wear earth tones or lose crucial votes to Nader? Gore wouldn't even let Clinton campaign for him - so how, how, how, are the Clintons responsible for 2000? Earth to Mellene: come in please!

The clintons were so completely sleazed up that Gore had to run away from them.

A coke snorting, alcoholic buffoon was able to get elected by promising to restore dignity to the white house === that's how badly the clintons trashed the place. F*ckers even stole the china and the silverware when they left, just like trailer trash stealing the towels from the Red Roof Inn.

clintons are a national embarrassment!

But the thoery that Gore lost because he wore earth tones is - well - interesting

They do not care what is right for the party, country or world.
These ego driven self serving people have no place in government.
We need selfless public servants now more than ever.

Well spoken, the Clinton's are destroying the DNC with this kind of rhetoric, it must stop or we will have McBush as our next President. Senator Clinton has little to no chance to win the nomination and should call it a day and let us start reading for the attacks by the GNC.

Maybe the Clintons are taking a lesson from Bush's tactics-- a "win" apparently is what counts -- never mind the method. Of course, unless they have help from Diebolt, it may not work as well for the Clintons. Makes me wonder, though, when she, apparently against common sense, offers Obama the Vice Presidency.

Obama will do or say anything to win. Hence, his 'race speech' after he was forced to give it. Then, can you believe this, he says that 'race is an issue that cannot be ignored'. Heck, he's been trying to ignore it for year. If you tried to make a movie about a disingenuous politician it would look like Obama's story except no one would believe it cause it's so ridiculous.

Bill Clinton used to be seen as rethug-lite by liberals, back in the nineties.

Now that BushCo has exposed the raw (Rovian) side of political contests,

we see how raw Bill can be as he tires to make a majority from a minority.

The only way John McCain can win is if the following occur:

Obama gets the Dem nomination

McCain sorts out his differences with Chuck Hagel on Iraq and has Hagel as the VP - this would lessen the age issue with McCain since if McCain passed away most Americans recognize Hagel as capable of filling the Presidential role.

The McCain/Hagel ticket would get alot of independents as well as Hillary supporters who tend to be more conservative than Obama supporters. Plus alot of Hillary supporters have been angered by the dislikeable attitude of Obama supporters (which is different from Obama's likeable attitude).

It still may not work, but it is McCain's only chance.

Before HuffPost was moderated I came out in support of Obama when most of regulars were supporting Edwards and Richardson. The only other regular commentors like ChiGuy and IkeChicago were supporting Obama way before that. I got my share of ridicule for supporting Obama. Now that Obama has risen in the polls and has been winning, there are lots of Obama supporters. Most I disassociate myself from since they do not reflect the thoughtful and unifying attitude of Obama. I am married to a Belizean woman who is black and I met Obama when our daughter graduated from Graduate School at Northwestern University where Obama gave the commencement speech. Obama is a fine man and will make a great President.

Let's face it,. there is bad blood on both sides. This always happens during a primary. We are just noticing it more because it is an extended primary season. Only a very, very small portion of Democrats will not vote Democrat, depending on who wins. The only thing that could create a defection effect would be a very ugly convention battle. But let's be honest, ugly things are being said by both supporters. Just stroll around the blogs a bit.

People don't vote for a Vice President though Hagel seems to be a decent guy.

It won't change the underlying question to voters, "Do you wanty 4 more years of Bush economics and foreign policy (100 years of war in Iraq, War with Iran, etc.)

No VP choice can change the doom to McCain on this overriding issue.

WHAT??? I've been trying to hold back my disgust at a campaign of fear, smear and lies that even Rove would blush at - Bill's comments are an example.

The Clintons are going for a third term and are using scorched earth - if they can't have it it's okay with them if they give it to McCain, not just out of spite, but for their corporate donors.

This is the height of irony. The Clinton campaign has a stated goal of overturning a national election with super-delegates and they are touting their love for America? What they are proposing of the super delegates is boarderline treasonous. Lets be honest, the Clintons love the Clintons far more than they love America.

Democracy to a Clnton begins and ends with its benefit to them. Democracy matters to them in FL and MI because it could help them win. Nationally, it is to be circumvented because it would cause them to lose.

The logic is simple.

elusiveyo, I'm getting tired of of female Clinton fans insisting that anyone who does not support their candidate is sexist. I would vote for a female candidate if I respected her and thought she could successfully lead this country. HRC is not that woman.

As far as the "Slick Willie" nickname, it's been around since Billyboy was Governor of Arkansas. I used to resent it when people called him "Slick Willie";now I'm wondering if they weren't onto something.

Like you, I too am tired. However in my case, registered republican supporting Sen. Clinton, I am tired of being called many vile names, including racist a few times, for expressing my support of Sen. Clinton and questioning or expressing concerns about Sen. Obama.

Rather difficult for me, a moderate republican, to switch to a democrat but being upset with the past seven years I felt a need to turn away from this administration and vote for something different. Had felt the 90s were pretty good years and have no qualms about going back to those economic good times and a fairly peaceful world (although with things having changed drastically since then nothing can be assured) so I decided I could vote for Sen. Clinton as she seemed more toward the middle of the democratic party than Sen. Obama. Doubt if I could have leaped far enough to support Sen. Obama but having his supporters call me vile names and belittle me for simply expressing my opinions and raising questions and concerns has certainly turned me off to his campaign.

I am probably in the minority among republicans but quite frankly, I would have to say Pres. Clinton if not the second certainly the third best president in my lifetime (I am 66). Would have been nice to see a female president in my lifetime (male presidents have certainly done a fine job screwing things up for this country).

But in any case, Clinton '08 or McCain '08.

Damn, 4 more weeks of watching a reality version of "War of the Roses". Two hours of it was bad enough.

Still, with FL and MI off the table for revotes, PA is the end of the line for Hillary. There is a light at the end of the fratricide tunnel. Whatever occurs in PA, that's it for her and the "don't count her out" loons.

Like many others, I've expected the DNC and SDs to step in earlier to head off the self-immolation of the Democratic Party that's been going on. Saying that there are a lack of spines in the Dem party is a vast understatement.

Still, after PA, the fear of Hillary somehow managing to alter time, space and mathematics can't help but subside (though hedging my bets, it may take Obama's winning NC and OR to give the faint of heart in the DNC confidence to stand up against Hillary's preposterous "chances").

So, roughly 4 more weeks of a desperate, angry and unethical Hillary/Bill taking vengeance on their opponent and their party for denying them and the status quo of the Bush-Clinton dynasty control and the power over this country to which they feel entitled.

Then we can get on with returning this country to one of, for and by the people.
