Bush And Endangered Species

Washington Post:

With little-noticed procedural and policy moves over several years, Bush administration officials have made it substantially more difficult to designate domestic animals and plants for protection under the Endangered Species Act.

Controversies have occasionally flared over Interior Department officials who regularly overruled rank-and-file agency scientists' recommendations to list new species, but internal documents also suggest that pervasive bureaucratic obstacles were erected to limit the number of species protected under one of the nation's best-known environmental laws.

1/20/09: "The End of An Error," should be deemed a national holiday. It appears that Bush et. al. view our endangered species as Road Kill, anyway. Cheney likes to shoot farm-raised (not excluding humans).

Maybe Conservatives are just better at conservation.

Isn't it just as possible that no species became endangered during the Bush Administration? Why do you Leftists always assume the worst? Where is it written in stone, that new species must be added to the endangered list every single year?

You are all such fatalists.

I think the species "American Taxpayer" is endangered during the bush administration........hey how about people who live in areas the PNAC want to conquer and steal their resources..........aren't they potentially endangered?

We don't assume the worst. It's just that Bush is the worst and every decision this administration has made has been the worst.

Others strive boldly forward to meet it head on.

Added to endangered species list;

LIBERALISM
GLOBAL WARMING
AL GORE
GUN CONTROL
TAXES

I bet this post won't pass the HufPo "anti-freedom-of-speech/blog" gestapo, just like the last 2 I posted.

Haven't we learned anything? Planet earth was put here for the benefit of the Friedmanites, and to hell with everyone else. Free market capitalists are completely at odds with the natural world. They're short-sighted doom makers, and it will be interesting to see how well that ideology fares when the biological scales have been tipped beyond repair, as is now the case with global climate patterns. Rape and pillage with an economic sword.

The good news is Mother Nature ALWAYS wins, and humanity will go the way of the dodo. Viva la bacteria.

Yeah, I know what you mean...

Maybe if we ignore the environment long enough it will finally just go away! Then we can do whatever we want. Everyone knows that jobs are way more important that having an environment that will support all life forms.

Heck, if the plants all die we wont have to water them either!

The thing I like most about global worming is that I wont have to buy sweaters any more! They're so expensive! I know the sweater makers will go out of business but sweater making jobs don't pay nearly as much as military base building jobs.

I only wish he could do away with the entire act; another lib "feel goodism" which further hinders the progress of the general populace.

I live in NC, and the poorest region of our state is the Northeast, populated primarily by African Americans. Recently, the Navy wanted to put an airfield there which would have provided jobs & new related businesses which the area so desperately needs.

But, no, all of the papers were ga-ga when the Navy scuttled its plans, with pictures of well-to-do Whites applauding because the "world had been saved for the birds & the fish."

Nonsense; the beginnings of a profitable commuity & a better life for its citizens were scrapped because so-called environmentalists do more harm to the citizentry than any other group.

A decent job would be first on my list, not the future of the loggerhead turtle.

I'm old enough to remember when the Alaskan pipeline was first introduced, and the kooks were screaming about the "destruction" of the caribou.

Hell, just the opposite happened; the caribou love the warmth of the pipelines, and their population thrived.

If you are speaking of the strip that was supposed to go near the Pocosin Lakes Wildlife Refugee it was the residents as well who were opposed to it because they farm there .. they farm soybeans and corn and it was a broad based coalition who opposed building the strip. Part of the navy's plan included poisoning birds to drive the birds from the area (because flocks of 20 lb birds would have wrecked havoc on the area) ...
But further the Navy would have bought the land for pennies on the dollar something the communities could not afford and might have allowed some farmers to lease back the land (tenant farming as in sharecropping) ... In Washington County many of the farmers have held the land for generations (one farmers land goes back to a deed signed by King George in 1742) ... the point is not only was the Naval Proposal bad for the environment but also terrible for the human environment that is why a broad coalition asked the Navy not to build.

The Act does not help with the progress of the General population and that is why so many legislators, farmers, citizens, and environmental activists who might not have seen or developed a coalition did so ... the risks were too great for the human, built and natural environment ...
I lived in North Carolina for a long time before I had to move elsewhere ... I had friends in Northampton County and Washington and Cutterick Counties and I worked with several schools in the area ... what you are speaking about would destroy people's homes. livelihoods, traditional communities etc ...
Further we live in a fragile ecosystem and global climate change is affecting everyone (and will certainly affect communities down east particularly out in Dare and Cutterick Counties given the intensifying strength of storms) ... We have to be good stewards of the environment ... and the Navy (and lord knows why they need another base in NC) had options to go elsewhere which they did ...

And you are very wrong .. scientifically economically and environmentally --- as well as in terms of preserving the rights of farmers and both African American and Anglo communities in Northeastern North Carolina ...

You've got to be kidding me.

Ever been to Fayetteville or Camp LeJeune? Thriving communities with all types of ancillary businesses.

NE NC would have been the perfect spot for the beginnings of a similar community, and would have seen thousands of jobs & more taxes for schools & hospitals, etc.

But the do-gooders chose the status quo; as always their "fell goodism" trumps economic development.

Johnny Reb Kemp! I know something else you'd like to do away with; the Emancipation Proclamation.

Johhny Reb Kemp is a quack historical revisionist who insists that the *North* started the American Civil War, only Herr Kemp calls it the "War of Northern Aggression."

IMHO Herr Kemp's judgement is clearly well and thoroughly impaired when it comes to asserting *facts,* especially when it comes to defending the corporatist agenda of his vaunted "Gang of Pedophiles" and their fellow travelers.

Censoring Science: Inside the Political Attack on Dr. James Hansen and the Truth of Global Warming

.............. Just over a year ago, Dr. Hansen went public with a charge that made headlines around the world—that the Bush administration had been trying to silence his warnings about the urgent need to address climate change................

Is this the same James Hansen who daily speaks & writes about global warming? The one constantly interviewed, the one who regularly appears on college campuses, the one whose editorials appear frequently in all matters of public media?

Is that the one being muzzled?

You know, Hansen never mentions that in the 1970's that NASA used his data to support the theory of global cooling. He soes seem to be "muzzled" on that subject.

I firmly believe that future generations of Americans will learn to think of President George W. Bush much the same as current generations think of Hitler.

It is a sad time in the history of America.

Contact your Representative and ask why they are not fulfilling their duty to impeach as clearly defined in The Constitution of The United States of America.

George Bush is only the latest in a long line of deregulators, which includes that spineless bastard, Clinton. I put all the blame on our Friedmanite buddy, Reagan, the father of American fascism. Because of him, the mantra of free-market economics has taken firm hold, not only in this country, but in the world, and it is that which has sterilized the protections we had in place for the biosphere.

I think you are somewhat hysterical. Bush isn't a good President for many reasons, but to compare him with Hitler is absurd.

There is a lot of blood on the hands of the Bush Administration. But I have not drawn comparisons to the holocaust of the Jewish people.

Hitler is thought of in many ways by many people. But most people would agree that he has shown the ugliest side of the human race and is an embarassement to all good people.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:17 PM on 03/23/2008

Hitler did not gain power with a majority. The political environment at the time allowed him to sieze it from fractions that could not unite against him. Then it was too late.

Future generations of Americans will issue appologies for not stopping Bush.

If Bush were to remain president beyohd his current term, it will be the "human" species that will have to be put on the endangered species list.

This is just one more in a long list of reasons why the integrity of our electoral system must be restored and be made inviolable so that in the future we don't get people like Bush fraudulently assuming positions of importance against the will of the people.
