CHENGDU, China — China accused the Dalai Lama on Sunday of stoking Tibetan unrest to sabotage the Beijing Olympics and also berated House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, saying she is ignoring the truth about Tibet.

This month's violence in Tibet and neighboring provinces has turned into a public relations disaster for China ahead of the August Olympics, which it had been hoping to use to bolster its international image.

The Chinese government said through official media that formerly restive areas were under control and accused the Dalai Lama, a Nobel Peace Prize winner, of trying to harm China's image ahead of the summer games.

"The Dalai clique is scheming to take the Beijing Olympics hostage to force the Chinese government to make concessions to Tibet independence," said the People's Daily, the main mouthpiece of the Communist Party.

The Tibetan spiritual leader called the accusations against him "baseless," asserting that he supported China's hosting of the summer games.

"I always support (that) the Olympics should ... take place in Beijing ... so that more than 1 billion human beings, that means Chinese, they feel proud of it," he said Sunday in New Delhi, India.

Pelosi's visit to the Dalai Lama in Dharmsala, India, on Friday was the first by a major foreign official since the protests broke out. The Democratic leader said if people don't speak out against China's oppression in Tibet, "we have lost all moral authority to speak on behalf of human rights anywhere in the world."

China's official Xinhua New Agency published commentary Sunday accusing Pelosi of ignoring the violence caused by the Tibetan rioters.

"'Human rights police' like Pelosi are habitually bad tempered and ungenerous when it comes to China, refusing to check their facts and find out the truth of the case," it said.

"Her views are like so many other politicians and western media. Beneath the double standards lies their intention to serve the interest groups behind them, who want to contain or smear China," it said.

Pelosi spokesman Drew Hammill said Sunday that Pelosi condemns the Chinese government's crackdown in Tibet and calls on it "to begin a substantive dialogue and to allow journalists and independent monitors into Tibet to find out the truth."

China's reported death toll from the protests in the Tibetan capital Lhasa earlier this month is 22. Tibet's exiled government says 99 Tibetans have been killed.

Xinhua said Sunday that 94 people had been injured in four counties and one city in Gansu province in riots on March 15-16. The report also said 19 rioters had surrendered in Gannan, a prefecture in Gansu, but it did not give any details.

Despite the media restrictions imposed by the Chinese government, some information was leaking out. An American backpacker who traveled to Chengdu, the capital of western Sichuan province, said he had seen soldiers or paramilitary troops in Deqen in northwest Yunnan province, which borders Tibet.

"What was an empty parking lot by the library was full of military trucks and people practicing with shields. I saw hundreds of soldiers," said the backpacker, who would give only his first name, Ralpha.

There have been no reported protests in Yunnan.

Monks at the Gedan Song Zan Monastery outside of Zhongdian in northwest Yunnan prayed Sunday for peace and an end to the recent unrest among ethnic Tibetan populations in China. The monks, who characterized themselves as both Tibetan and Chinese, said they felt that the upheaval and riots had helped no one.

The government has insisted that stability has returned to the troubled areas. State broadcaster China Central Television said Sunday that electricity and telecommunications had been restored in Lhasa.

The official lighting of the Olympic torch is set for Monday in Greece, and some 1,000 police will surround Ancient Olympia to keep away pro-Tibetan protesters from the ceremony. The torch is scheduled to travel through 20 countries before the Beijing Olympics open on Aug. 8.

One of Thailand's six torchbearers withdrew Sunday in protest. Environmentalist Narisa Chakrabongse said in an open letter that she decided against taking part in the relay to "send a strong message to China that the world community could not accept its actions."

Meanwhile, a group hosting the Dalai Lama's visit to Germany May 14-20 said Sunday that the trip was still scheduled to take place. The trip is to include meetings between the Dalai Lama and various German state leaders.

It is interesting how ignorance and belligerency always goes hand in hand.

I totally agree with Speaker Pelosi stance on Chinese Human Rights abuses and the fact that she has decided to do an end run around the State Department, just goes to show that our government has become so bloated and needs radical surgery by abolishing not only the State Department, but also the Education Bureau, and a Host of others.

The sooner Speaker Pelosi can initiate legislation that abolishes waste and ineffectual governmental departments and the Feckless Employees that are just drawing a paycheck for nothing in return, the better!!!,

But I won't be holding my Breath to see if and when that happens!

Consider the source Nancy,

a country that has institutionalized
the wholesale slaughter of female babies.

We should not fear China.
Their military is a shopping club.
We would wipe them off the planet.

Play hard ball with these phonies.

Do it for Tibet, a country that is more important
than people may realize.

I love how the wingnuts come out of the woodwork to badmouth Pelosi...for doing exactly what they all say the Democrats haven't been doing: Taking a stand, making their position clear and demanding action.

Based on what we've seen from Bush and company over the past 7 years I would think anything of this kind would be a welcome relief.

Lucky,
Nancy needs to clean her own house first, Impeach Bush, cut military aid to the neonazi-zionists, then take a stand on Tibet.

The Chinese state propaganda machine has no credibility whatsoever. But they have succeeded in fooling most of their own citizens. Living here in China I can tell you that most of the Han Chinese are thouroughly convinced that Tibet has always been part of Tibet, that Tibetans want to be part of China, and that the Dalai Lama is a warmonger. If you keep people in the dark and feed them bull*&^$ ...

A big thank you to Pelosi for expressing the feelings of support Americans have for the Tibetans. China has no right to Tibet. Tibet belongs to the Tibetans. We need to keep reminding the Chinese that the world will never accept their occupation of Tibet.

we know the feeling. here in the US, our leaders have convinced a sizeable segment of our population that Iraqis want us in Iraq and we're there to help them (don't look at the growing pile of dead behind the curtain)

China is not dissimilar to North Korea in many ways. China's propaganda machine, like North Korea's, is one big brainwashing apparatus. I guess the Chinese government would euphemistically refer to it as "re-education." Sad that the power elite in have manipulated their own people in this way. It hardly speaks to China's "greatness."

Over the years we have come accross so many Chinese people in this country , either have come for higher education or for other jobs, such wondeful and helpful friends they are. But...if the topic of conversation is about Tibet, they become very quiet . Somehow they do not find anyting wrong with the situation..and do not even want to have any kind of discussion about it .

Pelosi has been at the forefront of our leaving Iraq for quite some time so your argument rings hollow.

Are you actually criticizing her for asking China to open their doors to further inspection by objective parties...or...are you just another wingnut whining about anything a Democrat does?

What other options have the Chinese given to Tibetans? Their only option for the past 50 years is protest, and in this violent world the only way to get the news cameras is some violence. China should not ignore that the Dali Lama said he did not condone the violence and that protestors should stop all violence. The West has failed Tibet, and we've been given a second chance. Pelosi is right.

I am going to my local military recruiting center today so I can see the line of liberals waiting to enlist to fight China and Darfur. What ? You are all bark and no bite?

Give me a frigging break. Declaring any type of war with China including 'economic' war like an olympic boycott would be a huge mistake. Lord Bush has leveraged our nations reputation to the brink of the abyss. It is exactly as his prophecies are fortold. These people literally cannot wait for amergeddon and the rapture. They are absolutely Come on people THINK!!!!

who said anything about war with China? you must be a republican for that to be your first thought.
in any case, you've picked the wrong person to talk about enlisting in the military. since Bush was reelected, I've maintained that we need the draft immediately. we should start with those 35-40 years old as you do not need to be a youngster to drive a truck or cook food. draftees receiving current military pay would be much cheaper and not ruin the economy (don't think I was the only one to see what borrowing all this money and not paying our bills would do to the dollar!) that would also keep the payment with those who voted for this mess, not the kids who have not had a chance to vote yet.
also, since it was the goal to "keep them over there" and "support our troops in Iraq", I was suprised that all of those patriots did not immediately rush to the recruiting offices after they voted. perhaps all of those patriots could have kept our troops from contaminated water that makes them sick and poor wiring that electrocutes them.
I don't think an olympic boycott would be a good idea and in any case it's already been done, so we know the results aren't all that positive. economic war not necessary. what is necessary is that we stop borrowing from them immediately - take the financial hit that we voted for now rather than dumping it on our kids. that will remove us from worring about what china thinks and we can regain some sort of moral athority in the world.

Where did Pelosi say anything about a "war" with China?

She merely stated the truth: China needs to allow objective parties into Tibet to see what is actually happening.

Way to go Nancy Pelosi!!! Finally, someone in congress who has the courage to stand up to the largest repressive regime in the world, CHINA! One billion people who do not have the freedom to speak their mind, practice religion openly, or move freely. The Bush/Cheney double standard has completely squandered our 'moral' authority in this world. They cavort with Monarchs and Communists - and try to spread democracy in Iraq??? This is schizophrenic policy. It is so transparent! NANCY PELOSI HAS REAL COURAGE!!! - standing up to the largest nation in the world - who took Tibet by force and has occupied since 1959. They lie about the Dalai Lama with impunity - and hate buddhist spirituality and all religion. The Chinese have destroyed Tibet and brutally repressed the Tibetan people. The olympics will shine the light on CHINA - who will censor every word and monitor every video camera. What a weird world we live in...

kirksong, no offense, but how about taking a visit to China and seeing how true what you say is. Chinese have huge amount of freedom these days "to speak their mind, practice religion openly and move about freely." This is 2008, not 1975. (for example, see The Promotion of the Bible in Contemporary China and Evangelization http://www.hsstudyc.org.hk/en/tripod_en/en_tripod_144_03.html) What you say sounds as ridiculous as saying that Blacks in America do not have the freedom to speak their mind, practice their religion openly and move about freely. This might have been true in 1955 (see http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,861607,00.html) but for the most part it's no longer true today. It would not be siding with Chinese propagandists to admit some reality into your views of China - your comments would have much more credibility if they did not sound so uninformed. If you do not read Chinese, Roland Soong's well-regarded EastSouthWestNorth (ESWN) blog provides a translation of various Chinese language media and blogs. Here's his posting about Chinese bloggers on the Tibetan riots: http://www.zonaeuropa.com/200803c.brief.htm#008. This is not to say that China does not have a long way to go, but it been steadily going in the right direction.

Nancy Pelosi shows a lot of strengh and courage to stand up for Tibet and visiting Dalai Lama.

The negative comentators in this piece , ought to take a break form the blog and study the history of Tibet.

Before you type those words go and look how, on one peaceful night China decided to invade Tibet and take over the once peaceful country.

I agree. Who else from the US administration has made a commensurate effort? Bush continues to remain completely silent. Rice mumbled a few words early on. Otherwise, zilch. Sad and pathetic.

Most people, I've found, know next to nothing about Tibet's history or the Chinese invasion of their country, much less the destruction, fatalities, etc. that followed.

Buddism is also the most peaceful religion in the world, lots of Americans are picking up on that. I am not a Buddist but would love to listen to Dalai Lama in person if he ever comes to my town.
This is the time for people to follow up on his lectures, he is in his prime of seventy two, and his time is running out. After that .....
I would urge the bloggers to find out more about Tibet and Dalai Lama...

Now, the current administration has sold this country to China, it is a matter of time they will want or will have even more than that...
