WASHINGTON — Hillary Rodham Clinton adviser James Carville is refusing to apologize for comparing New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson to Judas.

Carville made the comparison to The New York Times after Richardson, once a member of President Clinton's Cabinet, endorsed Hillary Clinton rival Barack Obama last week for the Democratic presidential nomination. Carville called it an "act of betrayal," and pointed out that it came during Holy Week.

"Mr. Richardson's endorsement came right around the anniversary of the day when Judas sold out (Jesus) for 30 pieces of silver, so I think the timing is appropriate, if ironic," he said.

Richardson told "Fox News Sunday" that he wouldn't respond by getting "in the gutter like that."

"That's typical of many of the people around Senator Clinton," Richardson said. "They think they have a sense of entitlement to the presidency."

Carville told CNN on Monday that Richardson had committed an "egregious act" and he intended to make a sharp response to it.

"I wanted to use a very strong metaphor to make my point," Carville said. "I doubt if Governor Richardson and I will be particularly close in the future."

Clinton spokesman Howard Wolfson told reporters Monday that he didn't agree with Carville's comment.

"If I had said it, I would apologize," Wolfson said. "I did not say it, and if I had I would, but that's up to him."

Richardson served as ambassador to the United Nations and energy secretary during the Clinton administration.

From the worm that sold out Kerry last election to his Republican operative wife. He dares to call anybody Judas? At least Richardson stayed with the Democrats and didn't help the damned Republicans.

Carville is a bigger Judas for sure.

Obviously, theClinton's are sending a message to all the other potential traitors, that they will be punished if they follow Richardson's lead. A landslide of super delegates would be a disaster for them.

As I recall, Richardson was one of the strongest proponents of NAFTA during his Clinton years. Last I heard he still is. Is this an asset for Obama? On the other hand, Edwards has been an outspoken critic of NAFTA for a long time. . . but he's not a sellout.

He SHOULD apologize. Comparing ANYONE to the one who betrayed Christ is horrible (much worst than being compared to McCarthy...when in fact, Bill's stating who's patriotic and who isn't is an accurate portrayal of Joe McCarthy). But to claim that because RIchardson decided not to support Hillary is comparable to Judas betraying Christ..which led to His crucifiction!!!! Unbelievable!!!

I thought Carville was the Democratic Political Darling? At least he was in 1992. It seems that the spirit of Benedict Arnold has "Come Home to Roost!"

This is fear, plain and simple. James Carville is afraid that others will follow suit and is blustering to try to stem the tide of Obama endorsements. The Clinton campaign has now resorted to trying to damage the opponent by inferring that Obama is not patriotic , propped up the Republican as meeting the Presidential threshold, and embellished Clinton's own credentials even if it means lying about Bosnia, Ireland and NAFTA. The Clintons have a history of self-preservation and self-promotion even if it means that the best interests of the country or the democratic party are put aside. If she really wanted an honorable election, she would stick to the truth, release her tax returns and her husband's Presidential library contributors. I would like to hear what James Carville would say about that.

Clintons not just gave him political life, but real life. He is their son, didn't you know that? And were it not for the Clintons awarding him the Governorship, Richrdson would still be picking lettuce. People don't know all this. You are doing a great service pointing out all these facts.

For a "studlyguy" you sure do seem to have your panties in a bunch over Richardson's choice of who to endorse. Bill gave him a job, not Hillary, and he doesn't owe either of them a thing for it.

Thanks for the handy quotes supporting your accusations of hateful speech from Richardson. So he is the "hate filled, negative spewing person" while you and Carville brand him a backstabbing Judas for supporting another candidate. Uh-huh. Gauging your level of self-awareness from your post, and knowing you style yourself "studlyguy," I just have to say: LOVE the bag!

Too bad Jimmy, 'cause Richardson will probably be pretty close to President Obama.

Richardson will be lucky to get to be some cabinet position whom nobody hears about. And that's OK. Apparently, that would be appropriate.

Out of one side of the Clinton campaign's mouth comes "Richardson doesn't matter!" Out of the other side, "he betrayed us!" Which is it?

I think that Carville did this as a lesson to other Clinton "owned" superdelegates who may consider backing Obama. He is sending a thinly veiled messaage.

Remember that many superdelegates were appointed by Bill Clinton. The Clinton camp therefore believes that they "own" these people. I think that this is why she is so sure that she will get the nomination.

Just words. They're not worth much, according to the Clinton campaign. Also, interesting how they downplayed the importance of the endorsement, but yet Carville reacted so strongly. Somebody didn't get the talking points.

Well, then James Carville can't object if we want to brand him a lunatic.
