WASHINGTON — Hillary Rodham Clinton adviser James Carville is refusing to apologize for comparing New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson to Judas.

Carville made the comparison to The New York Times after Richardson, once a member of President Clinton's Cabinet, endorsed Hillary Clinton rival Barack Obama last week for the Democratic presidential nomination. Carville called it an "act of betrayal," and pointed out that it came during Holy Week.

"Mr. Richardson's endorsement came right around the anniversary of the day when Judas sold out (Jesus) for 30 pieces of silver, so I think the timing is appropriate, if ironic," he said.

Richardson told "Fox News Sunday" that he wouldn't respond by getting "in the gutter like that."

"That's typical of many of the people around Senator Clinton," Richardson said. "They think they have a sense of entitlement to the presidency."

Carville told CNN on Monday that Richardson had committed an "egregious act" and he intended to make a sharp response to it.

"I wanted to use a very strong metaphor to make my point," Carville said. "I doubt if Governor Richardson and I will be particularly close in the future."

Clinton spokesman Howard Wolfson told reporters Monday that he didn't agree with Carville's comment.

"If I had said it, I would apologize," Wolfson said. "I did not say it, and if I had I would, but that's up to him."

Richardson served as ambassador to the United Nations and energy secretary during the Clinton administration.

Carville is backing Clinton, so naturally, he'd go after Richardson. I can't believe how disgusting that Clinton camp is (and what depths it will sink to in order to win).

Can you imagine an Obama supporter using a name like "Judas" or "Monster" without getting canned at once?

I heard Richardson talking about his love for Obama on some pundit show yesterday. He said he couldn't even explain why he feels so strongly. I have heard much like that from bloggers here. I don't get it. When I first noticed this guy I thought he was a con artist. An arrogant con. That's what I see now. I saw George coming from a mile away. Reagan too. I get the same feeling about all three of them. I know a lot of people love Obama, but if you can't quite put your finger on WHY, you need to figure it out before you absolutely commit. Richardson should have spent more time thinking about it.

SIde Note: Despite Carville usually being an impressive democratic figure... That was until these bone headed remarks. He is in fact one of the ugliest men in politics. He is pathetic for these remarks. If he was a real democrat than he would have realized that it's divisive and that this is not helping the party. More focus off of the issues that Hillary is continuing to lie to the American people about. It's further proof that Richardson had indeed made the right choice by backing Obama. Hillary has taken no responsibility for her shameless champaign efforts and dirty tactics. Richardson himself said he was turned off by it and the immediate reaction from her supporters is JUDAS!!! Pathetic desperation is upon us and is available for your viewing pleasure on the "news."

The Clintons and their surrogates are sounding and acting more and more like the mafioso. Now I'm really beginning to question all that I used to defend about the clintons -- Vince Foster, Whitewater, etc etc etc....Vast right wing conspiracy?? Methinks not!

Richardson's loyalty was to Bill Clinton. He appointed Richardson not Hillary. If Chelsea runs in 2016 does Richardson have to endorse her too?

Good point.

Well, Chelsea does have a lot of the same foreign policy experience that her mother does. Dodging sniper fire, opening borders, one lump or two...

Yes, thank heaven that Bill Richardson took a stand. And I'm glad that Carville put his foot in his mouth with that idiotic Judas comment. It shows him to be the bugeyed hysterical and bigoted goofball that he is, and now I think he will be taken much less seriously.

Correct me if I am wrong, but wasn't it Bill Clinton that got him his jobs and not Hillary?

Just because Richardson worked with Bill doesn't mean he has to feel forced to support Bill's wife. Bill R has demonstrated great courge by standing up for what he believes.

..and he did, so in that case , on that topic bloggers and media should realise that and not bring Bill up any chance they get, two separate entities ...

Richardson got his job because Clinton needed him. The Clintons are self-serving.

I will clarify. Bill Richardson was first elected to congress 26 years ago and he as earned every position that he has had since then. He was an accomplished democrat before the Clinton administration and he will continue to be long after her campaign ends.

Loyalty to country first, not any particular politician, especially one you know will bring harm to our country, as many Super Delegates know the Clintons will.

damn right, call it what it is. these Obama people have no respect for the Clinton's anyway. That's easy enough to see from the hate they spew with their posts on this site. I'll tell them this and that is the Clinton's have done a hell of a lot more to advance their causes in the last 40 years than anyone else has bar none. So you go ahead and bash and spew your hate people but Obama will not be the legitimate candidate of the democratic party without the votes of Michigan and Florida and nothing will change that.

Clinton supporters seem ok with spewing hateful comments...they seem to think it is better to be called "McCarthy" than to be called the one who betrayed JESUS CHRIST!!!

Take a close look at what some of you Clinton supporters are saying....in other words...Pot, don't call the kettle black!

Ok, Carville needs to be fired from CNN. It is clear that he is bias and has been bias. He needs to be fired.

You are kidding right? Carville doesn't work for CNN. He appears from time to time. But if you started firing people with a bias, you would end up perhaps with 2 or 3 people -- on all the networks.

Second of all. Sounds like heaven.

Carville is the "Judas" who called Mary Matalin in Cheney's office to warn them about Kerry's intent to call for an examination of Ohio provisional ballots, allowing the White House to call their cronies in Ohio and counter the move. Over 250,000 bush ballots should have been thrown out, but Carville said he "disagreed", so he called his accomplice in Cheney's office. Now THAT is REAL "Judas-ing"!

Why bother about him (Billy Richardson)? His campaign for the nomination screams his "nothingness" to the American public. Now, with the possibility of the job of President and Dog Catcher crossed off his career list, he is trying for the VP slot since Obamamamas need some pull in the hispanic community, which is now larger than the black minority in numbers. Not gonna happen. They see what Hillary can do for them and all of us. I don't see Obama picking him up. No, I see Obama wanting to be President, VP, butcher, baker, candlestick maker, with the ego for all and concern for none. Wake up and smell the arrogance.

What this comment suggests is that Bill Clinton makes cabinet appointments not by getting the most capable person for the job; but someone that he can expect loyalty and payback from later on. I need to amend that to loyalty and payback to his spouse. The Clintons keep changing it from whether this is her campaign, Bill's campaign, or the Clintons' campaign.
