WASHINGTON — Hillary Rodham Clinton adviser James Carville is refusing to apologize for comparing New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson to Judas.

Carville made the comparison to The New York Times after Richardson, once a member of President Clinton's Cabinet, endorsed Hillary Clinton rival Barack Obama last week for the Democratic presidential nomination. Carville called it an "act of betrayal," and pointed out that it came during Holy Week.

"Mr. Richardson's endorsement came right around the anniversary of the day when Judas sold out (Jesus) for 30 pieces of silver, so I think the timing is appropriate, if ironic," he said.

Richardson told "Fox News Sunday" that he wouldn't respond by getting "in the gutter like that."

"That's typical of many of the people around Senator Clinton," Richardson said. "They think they have a sense of entitlement to the presidency."

Carville told CNN on Monday that Richardson had committed an "egregious act" and he intended to make a sharp response to it.

"I wanted to use a very strong metaphor to make my point," Carville said. "I doubt if Governor Richardson and I will be particularly close in the future."

Clinton spokesman Howard Wolfson told reporters Monday that he didn't agree with Carville's comment.

"If I had said it, I would apologize," Wolfson said. "I did not say it, and if I had I would, but that's up to him."

Richardson served as ambassador to the United Nations and energy secretary during the Clinton administration.

Carville is a hack. What the Democratic Party is trying to get away from is the mob-like mentality that the GOP made their very own, where absolute loyalty is a must, but with comment, bam, Carville shoves it right down our throats. It's time we rallied against these quasi-conservative Democratic king-makers on the Clinton campaign.

Hillary is betraying the Democratic party by staying in a race she has no chance of winning. She is the real Judas.

Doesn't Carville have it kind of backwards? Richardson decided not to be bound to the Clinton's 30 pieces of silver and instead chose to follow his conscience.

Is this the first time most of you have followed a political campaign? Geez, placing your bet on the leading horse is not exactly "following your conscience",lol. Richardson has been forthright about his desire to be a player on the national scene. This was nothing more than believing he had a better shot at VP with Obama.

This was without a doubt betrayal. It's gunna hurt Richardson badly in the long run. It may not come from the Clintons, but no one else in politics is EVERY going to trust this guy. Karma's a bitch and always comes for a visit.

Its been pretty evident, and Carville just confirms it, that the Clintons and there surrogates only care about the Clintons. Loyalty is about taking care of them; if someone believes Obama is better for the country at this time, they are a Judas? Richardson is a patriot. His loyalty is to the country, not the Clintons. If some of the Bush people had been more loyal to the Country rather than Bush, this country would be a lot better shape today.

The tragedy of this campaign is that when it's over the Clintons and their loyal followers (Clinton first, the Party second) will have lost a bundle of credibility among former supporters. I never thought I would tune out Bill or Carville but I find myself doing it quite a bit now. Too bad.

I'd call him Brutus but it was Easter and Carville couldn't resist. After all, he has opinions and likes attention.

Exactly what does Bill Richardson OWE Hillary? Bill Richardson served in the BILL CLINTON administration; Hillary was MERELY married to the man who was elected president, thereby making her FIRST LADY. Hillary DID NOT HAVE security credentials; she DID NOT act as America's official ambassador to ANY PLACE. Hillary was like EVERY OTHER FIRST LADY, meeting and greeting foreign officials AND having the opportunity to travel around the world AT TAX PAYER EXPENSE.

I bet Bill asked Richardson... I don't know about you, but if someone who was key to me achieving the level of political success that RIchardson has achieved asked me to endorse my spouse, I would at very least NO endorse the opponent. I thought he had class, now I think he is another oportunistic pol.

It was only posting the first paragraph and cutting everything else, so I edited it down and lumped it all into one. It's probably a temporary glitch.

Demanding that your fellow citizens and surrogates prove loyalty to their leader over loyalty to their country? I don't think so. That's how we got into this mess with the republicans. No thanks. I'll take loyalty to country, my fellow Americans, and the Constitution over loyalty to any one person or party anytime. And on top of it, they had the effrontery to use Easter, the holiest of Christian holidays, to try and control the Easter message as just another "news cycle," for the purpose of placing false judgement on another for their own self-aggrandizement. No, no, and no. Richardson got the hell out of there just in time.

Yep thats Hillary, the clinton's, her campaign, her surrogates, and her supporters SELFISH!!! How they are part of the Democratic Party I will never understand...Her antics are Republican...Perhaps she should switch parties as the Republican Party seems to suit her and her campaign much better.

Wasn't the Clinton Administration the last successful Democratic Administration? Oh, that's right but real Democrats need to abandon that notion, trash the Clinton's and anyone else who has ever done anything for the Democratic party. Instead, we need to consider how awesome Reagan was at "change"! That's apparently what true Democrats do these days, lol.
