Did Only Two Papers Feature 4,000 Iraq Deaths Across Their Front Pages?

  |  Katharine Zaleski   |   March 24, 2008 10:06 PM

It's a sad day for America's media when the tragic milestone of 4,000 soldiers' deaths is reported and it appears that just two papers -- yes two -- place it across their front pages. After a search through today's front pages, I found that The Rocky Mountain News in Denver and the Daily News in New York were the only papers to give their entire front pages to honoring the men and women killed in Iraq. The Los Angeles Times gave a top quarter of their front to a feature called "Stories Of The Fallen." If I've missed a paper that featured the deaths across it's entire front page then I welcome any corrections in the comment string of this post.

Although a paltry number of papers gave the U.S. troops a deserved front page memorial, other papers -- like the The Times Herald-Record in Middletown, N.Y and Newsday of Long Island, N.Y. did play the news on the banners above their nameplates or on their initial pages. The NewsMuseum has more analysis here.

Let's take a look at just some of the major US papers that left the soldiers out of their main front page headlines. To give a small bit of credit where not much is due, I've updated that The Washington Post posted a small headline in its very bottom left corner while The New York Times had a mention in a story excerpt below the fold. The major newspapers -- some cut above the folds -- are pasted below. No need for more words. The media's silence on Iraq is loud and clear below.

And so you want to use this terrible milestone to serve our politics (I share yours, but I will not use this "milestone") You do not need to plaster 4000 dead soldiers all over the news to remind people that this war has been a disaster. And then what, wait around until the 5000th casualty. As one poster said, the 3999 was just as important as the 4000! Lets not look like we are using a milestone to further our good goal.

Greatt post. We seem to have forgotten the War.

Most of us are not touched by the deaths and thus they do not happen.

The War Economy will get us all.

No one cares, a few do, but political sexcapades sell much better. George Bush and the media have slowly and steadily shifted this country's focus - for the most part Americans will only care if something happens to their family or friends - the soldiers and the war only matter when the media thinks it will be profitable. It completely blows my mind that so much attention has been given to Spitzer and his replacement. Lets save all the moral outrage for Bush/Cheney.

I'm wondering how many times this author reported #3,993. Wasn't this person as important as #4000? Why in the world do people only focus on the round numbers? #1 was pretty important to.

Why doesn't HUfFFPOST print at the top of their Main Page, a daily American War Death Tally?

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 09:47 AM on 03/25/2008

Right? C'mon, Arianna. Keep the war visible. Don't let the people forget that there is still a bleedin' WAR going on, in which 4000+ Americans, and 500,000+ Iraqis have been KILLED.

Your search was incomplete. When I walked by the soon-to-open "Newseum" yesterday in DC, I stopped to look at the display cases featuring the front page from major newspapers in every state. Several featured the 4,000.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 08:41 AM on 03/25/2008

I agree that there were a lot of papers that failed to report the 4,000 mark, but not just two. Even The Advocate in Baton Rouge, La had it as the top headline.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 11:47 AM on 03/25/2008

USA TODAY, a newspaper found in all states and most cities, DID NOT!

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 09:44 AM on 03/25/2008

Ms. Zaleski, I do agree that the msm has repeatedly failed to report the horror of this war. However, I question the detail of your search in this instance. The Houston Chronicle, a very large daily that is a good, but not a very progressive paper (it appears each morning on my lawn next to my Obama '08 sign), did have the following headline March 24, 2008 at the TOP of the front page:

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 08:11 AM on 03/25/2008

Let's see... WWII and 24,000 American soldiers died on D-Day and over 75,000 were killed during the month-long Battle of the Bulge. I can't find a single large daily newspaper that headlined these deaths on their front page. When you whine that there is not enough reporting on the "horror of this war" it is nothing less than a war protest on your part. Compared to the American Civil War (600,000 died) or WWII (72,000,000 died on all sides) - this is a skirmish.

That doesn't make it any more palatable. But I usually find those of your ilk will try to appease our very real enemies until it is too late. And hundreds of thousands more will die because of your rank stupidity. of course, then you can complain that we didn't do enough to protect you and your deceased family.

Absolutely pitiful.....

.....The acquiescence by the corporate media to the Orwellianism of the administration makes todays mainstream journalism look more and more like a collective Pravda. Katie couric giggles and does a story on spring fashion while the Iraq war is reduced to 3% of media coverage in the past month, according to Iraq war vet and expert ontthe matter paul rieckoff ( which was about 7% less than the amount of coverage on MSM dedicated to anna nicole smith's drug-addled corpse a year or so ago)....then the corporate media quickly segues into a sympathetic story about the woes of the multimillionaire investment class, then acts befuddled in explaining gasoline prices, willfully ignoring exxon/mobil's $40,000,000,000 in profits as have anything to do with it...on and on it goes....

Correction: The Dallas Morning News also had it as the top headline.

Why would the NY Post care? It's always been a rag even before Murdoch bought it. We can change this by not buying their publications or watching their channels. Since that's the only thing that gets a voice in this country, let your money do the talking.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 06:25 AM on 03/25/2008

If you're going to harp on something about this war -- talk about the actual cost -- not the human cost. The trillions spent has been ridiculous. However, when you consider the fact that over 3 million people have died from Heart Disease in the last 5 years or that over 200,000 have died in traffic accidents in the same time frame --- the figure of 4000 does not ring out so loudly...Sorry to be so callous but that's just the way I see it.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 06:12 AM on 03/25/2008

Let's see now . . . Did I get you right? You said lots of people die of heart disease, so it's OK to knock off more people in a war. Wow.

Since the Iraq war began, we've had 4000 US fatalities out of approximately 650000 deployed soldiers. See...http://www.heritage.org/Research/Iraq/bg1954.cfm for more info. Out of 650000 deployments over those 5 years - .61% have died -- < 1%.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 03:45 AM on 03/25/2008

Should it be a relevant point of pride that less than 1% died? Should we not be far more proud if no one died for this stupid senseless war. The war was begun on false pretenses and it is still being carried on such pretenses. The surge did not work so much as bribing Sunni sheiks got the agenda changed and the guns pointed away from GIs. The bribes did not require more soldiers. More soldiers means more money will be spent so that the private contractors can enhance their fiscal standings. At no time has the activity in Iraq enhanced America's safety but it has besmirched America's reputation.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 08:33 AM on 03/25/2008

How many times have you been deployed?

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 07:38 AM on 03/25/2008

Maybe it's because people in this country understand that this a WAR and that in war there are CASUALTIES and that the number of casualties have been the most MINIMAL of ANY wars we have fought in the last 100 years. Tell me. What EXACTLY would be the point of posting the news on every front page in America? I have always understood that that was reserved for NEWS. What new news are you expecting to provide us? That we are in Iraq? That we are in Afghanistan? That there is a war? That soldiers are sacrificing their lives for an HONORABLE cause? Sorry. Most Americans already know this. And I wouldn't pay 50 cents for information I already know. Besides, your concern is NOT for a memorial to soldiers. It is your way of protesting the war. Most of us remember and give thanks to the troops EVERY SINGLE day. We don't wait until the MSM decides to "honor their memory" by using big bold numbers.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 02:39 AM on 03/25/2008

"That soldiers are sacrificing their lives for an HONORABLE cause?"

The soldiers are honorable, the cause is not.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 01:32 PM on 03/26/2008

I'm not too exercised about not fixating on the 4000th deaths because with the present administration, these casualties are simply collateral damage in their larger political and economic war against the American people and everyone else that doesn't agree with them.

Last night, in the most fitting retort to the DISHONORABLE cause that Rumsfeld and Cheney forcefed us, PBS broadcast a detailed hour by hour, minute by minute account of the shamefully crafted pretexts for this war. This account was the product of journalists, military experts, CIA agents, political operatives, and many others who had first hand knowlege of how we were misled.

So I agree that the 4000 figure is not news, but like the clear picture we get of the war criminality that started this Iraqi misadventure, it's the accrual that is news; the steady accumulation of damning information.

If I were calirighty, I'd check out this series. Step to the side of your received opinions and realize they've played you and all of us for stooges. You don't want to be a stooge do you? Even Condi Rice resented it!

Considerably more people have died in Iraq than died on 9/11. What kind of logic kills 100,000 bystanders and loses 4,000 soliders to do it, in vengeance for 12 men killing 3,500? Lidice logic.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 09:02 AM on 03/25/2008

Iraq had NOTHING to do with 9/11 - the government has brain washed you - it was the people from AFGHANISTAN that did 9/11 --- but then again some people believe that it was OUR OWN government that plotted and carried out the 9/11 attacks. We will never really know the truth.

You seem to assume that the "people in this country" all believe exactly as you do--that this war is being fought for an honorable cause and has been worth the cost in lives lost and irreparably damaged. They don't. Pick a poll, any poll, and you will find your opinion is in the minority. It's sad that your method of "giving thanks to the troops EVERY SINGLE day" includes pushing their losses to the back of your mind so that you don't have to see their numbers in the headlines. Sad, but telling.

Honorable? Please. Attacking, invading and occupying a country because of something you think they have, and don't is about as dishonorable as a sneak attack on a Hawaiian harbor.
