Fred Thompson Plots Hollywood Return

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. — After a failed run for president, Fred Thompson is getting back to pretending to be commander in chief.

Hollywood's high-powered William Morris Agency announced this week that it has signed the actor/politician, signaling a return to the screen for the former senator from Tennessee.

Thompson most recently appeared as grizzled district attorney Arthur Branch on "Law & Order" and has played authority figures in the films "The Hunt For Red October," "Die Hard II" and "In the Line of Fire."

Thompson dropped out of the race for the Republican presidential nomination on Jan. 22.

This is truly a story to savor. About a year ago the media was full of reports about how the Republican nomination would belong to Fraud once he deigned to campaign alongside mere mortals.

This campaign has had few pleasures, but watching Fraud go absolutely nowhere, and fast, was a sheer delight.

Thompson should've stuck with the Law & Order gig. That role was perfect for someone as lazy as Thompson. You sit behind a desk and say your lines. Nothing physical to the role. No big emotional scenes. Not a lot of screen time. All the things that would cause any other actor to get bored and quit. Guess he can't go back to L&O now. Where else can an actor find a role like that? Maybe he can become a celebrity pitchman.

I speculated at the start that when Thomposon announced his candidacy and then ran such a tepid campaign that it was actually about moving himself from the B-List to the A-List of actors.

Moving from the one list to the other can mean millions, and is mostly a matter of name recognition rather than skill.
