Oprah Winfrey's 13-year-old Cocker Spaniel, Sophie, has passed away of kidney failure.

"Everyone here is really sad," a source at her Harpo production company told Celebrity Dog Watcher. "Sophie was truly part of the Harpo family as well as Oprah's."

In the December issue of O, Winfrey wrote about Sophie's condition, saying that she and beau Stedman Graham were "preparing for the inevitable."

The two have another Cocker Spaniel, Solomon.

I am commenting on this only to express my displeasure at this story being considered 'news' for the 'media' page.

Absolutely on point. Sorry the dog died, but what makes that newsworthy. Dogs die every day, Oprah needs to get over herself. There are important issues that need to be discussed, her self obsession is not one of them.

it is not Oprah that needs to get over herself, it is whoever decided this item was worthy of space on HuffPo that needs to get over themself. (Oprah is entitled to her grief, it's her pet)

Dogs don't "pass away." Your grandmother passes away. Dogs die. It's disgusting that even a gossip column would print a solemn report of a celebrity's dog dying.

Oprah, my heart goes out to you. Lossing my dog after 18 years was the hardest thing I've ever been through. Please accept my condolences, I am truly sorry for your loss.

Nobody gets it all, do they? No one is getting out of here alive and those of us lucky enough to have the unconditional, endless love of a dog know all too well the pain that death can cause. They are so defenseless and look to us for their every bit of food, water and love. When we're unable to provide something that eases the pain and fixes the life-threatening problem, it's devastating.

I lost my best friend of nine years , A chihuahua that I rescued from a breeder who was going to put him down because he was not perfect. The day before I went in the Hospital for cancer surgery. This depressed me so badly that the Doctor would not do the procedure. Instead I spent the three days before Christmas, Christmas day and three days after in the hospital receiving I.V medications, Anti testosterone medications, in order to repress the cancer. I feel for her . Peace, love and harmony .

How is this significant in any way to anything of importance that has ever happened? How is this story related to anything that has happened in the world? It's amazing to me that any sizable number of people would be interested in the life of a celebrity's dog to justify a story or snippet about it. Compare the fact that this story has interest that to the number of people currently following the Iraq war which is about 6% of the population. What's worse is that people in this forum actually care.

This is sort of sad, but I'm sure the replacement has already been cloned.

What makes the death of Oprah's dog an event to report on? It's quite disgraceful, especially, when today most of the news (among others) focus on the 4 000 dead soldiers in Iraq....

i echo that earlier comment: why is this news? I love animals, I've had a dog die in the past two years, but of all things to report? People die every day in car accidents and old age. Why not report on them? Or if you're going to post an article about a dog dying, why not anything on the thousands of domesticated dogs who die from neglect? No one outside Oprah's circle needs to know about a dog who had an owner that provided for them and died of old age. What next? Oprah's 20 year old bonsai tree dies? Oprah's skin cells flake off? Oprah's Dr Scholls break, need to be replaced?

People are assholes. Pets just want to love you.

You're spot on...people are assholes and really need to get over themselves. I for one have never thought anything less of my cocker spaniel even when he came out/went back in / came out...brought home a mixed breed...

Situation - Exactly! Dogs are incredible people. This is the second dog Oprah has lost in the past year. Her other dog choked to death on a ball. American's spend billions each year on their pets. That says a lot for pet owners. There is nothing like the unconditional love of a pet.

Such smartass people on this story. Be nice for gawd sakes.

Somehow, compared to the milestone of 4000 (ADMITTED) US deaths in Iraq, I have a hard time getting "up" to grieve over Oprah's dog.

The truth is though, as reflected in our media...Americans care more about Spitzer's Girls Gone Wild Floozy than the tragedy in Iraq.
