Hitchens: Obama Sold Out His Grandmother

It's been more than a month since I began warning Sen. Barack Obama that he would become answerable for his revolting choice of a family priest. But never mind that; the astonishing thing is that it's at least 11 months since he himself has known precisely the same thing. "If Barack gets past the primary," said the Rev. Jeremiah Wright to the New York Times in April of last year, "he might have to publicly distance himself from me. I said it to Barack personally, and he said yeah, that might have to happen." Pause just for a moment, if only to admire the sheer calculating self-confidence of this. Sen. Obama has long known perfectly well, in other words, that he'd one day have to put some daylight between himself and a bigmouth Farrakhan fan. But he felt he needed his South Side Chicago "base" in the meantime. So he coldly decided to double-cross that bridge when he came to it. And now we are all supposed to marvel at the silky success of the maneuver.

You often hear it said, of some political or other opportunist, that he would sell his own grandmother if it would suit his interests. But you seldom, if ever, see this notorious transaction actually being performed, which is why I am slightly surprised that Obama got away with it so easily. (Yet why do I say I am surprised? He still gets away with absolutely everything.)

Wrights speech is good.

Obama's speech is great:

Please keep your opinion to yourself if you have not listened to both speeches.

"[Wright's congregation sees] the colour of poverty in a world of wealth and begin to understand that it is no accident that the world's poorest are one colour, and that the world's richest are another colour." - Reverend Jeremiah Wright (911 speech)

In Wright's world, poor people only come in one colour and wealthy people only come in one colour. He's built an institution based on this premise. If this isn't racism, one has to wonder what is? Certainly one has to wonder what's "good" about it.

Barack Obama's speech paints a slightly different picture condemning the view of "white racism as endemic", and observing that Reverend Wright's views "rightly offend white and black alike", but embodies "the bitterness and bias that make up the black experience in America".

"But we do need to remind ourselves that so many of the disparities that exist in the African-American community today can be directly traced to inequalities passed on from an earlier generation" - Barack Obama

How does it excuse the slander against Jews? How does it excuse the slander against non-American whites around the world? How does it excuse the slander against whites who are under fourty? How does it excuse the slander against whites who, despite Reverend Wright's analysis of history, fought long and hard against racism?

At the end of the day, Obama holds whites and blacks to different standards.

What's so "great" about that?

As I thought, this is the rethugs/hillary talking smear of the day:

"The Israelis have illegally occupied Palestinian territories for almost 40 years now. It took a divestment campaign to wake the business community up concerning the South Africa issue. Divestment has now hit the table again as a strategy to wake the business community up and to wake Americans up concerning the injustice and the racism under which the Palestinians have lived because of Zionism."

This is NOT racism. Plenty of Israelis think the occupation is wrong and should be ended.

I think they should end the occupation of disputed lands, The Isrealis have offered to end the occupation several times.

Just more Rovian BS.

Hitchens deserves his own TV show. He should call it "Chris Hates Everybody".

Where do you live? Cause I have lived in black neighborhoods which called me - a white bitch - daily.

Black ministers are active in making whites in their hood know they are not wanted. They employ many means to disturb and upset, annoy and harass any whites in a black hood.

The fact is the so-called minister is not ministering. He is abusing a tax exempt status to launch his tirades against whites for income only. This speech you call is not a speech - it is an act of hate mongering for money, gathering people under a fraudulent intention, collecting "donations" and giving a vent performance, feeding the insecurities of a group of people who have a legitimate complaint in a society that is increasingly unequal.

There is no right to this fraud.

I object to anyone who gives these charlatans any credence.

Did you know that the FBI goes to the Mosques in the South Bay of California to review the speeches by guest imans? Does the FBI review the Black pastors, nope, not so.

In principally Black communities, like Oakland, CA, just travel down any street in the worst areas, and you will encounter a chapel, church, or Christian center, but do you hear of them - the religious leaders - putting themselves out to stop the horror of crime that is Oakland? None but a few true believers and to their cloth do so. Few as in 2 for the entire population of Oakland -

Hey, you may be on to something here. As I understand it, your thesis is: black people suck. Good luck with that one! No wonder your neighbors are so friendly.

I have lived in Washington DC, Palo Alto, I have walk in the black neighborhood's.

On the rare occasions some black person has insulted me, I have engaged them in conversations. They apologized.

Fear is the soul destroyer.

If Hitchens doesn't calm down he's going to give spiteful invective a bad name.

Christopher Hitchens reads like an angrier version of William F. Buckley. All his opinions are neatly stated in perfectly crafted English, but this one tirade reminds me more of Doris Lessing's Colonial Era comments about Obama, which basically went like this: A black man should not be allowed to win the United States Presidency.

For a man who hates Henry Kissinger as he does anyone who believes in God, you'd think Hitchens would have enough on his plate to rant about at this stage.

He should stay the hell out of our election process. We've got enough problems already without having Chicken Little coming in to rain on our parade some more.

Hitchens is a boozy dim-bulb; a literary version of a shock jock; a blowhole of the first magnitude.
He lacks faith in everything, and thus is an empty shell; a void looking to suck everyone else into his emptiness.

Unfortunately, I don't think Obama knows what side of the fence he is on anymore. White or Black? I would hate to see this election turn into a vote based on the color of skin...like the south has turned it into.

If that's the case...here is the breakdown of "color" in America as of 2005

White 73.9%
African American 12.4%
Asian 4.4%
Native American and Alaskan Native 0.8%
Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander 0.1%
Other/multiracial 8.3%
Hispanic or Latino (of any race)

Looks like white-man America wins evertime. Is that what we want??? If everyone in the rest of the country votes the way the African / American's have been voting...then I guess the race for the Presidency will go to the white candidate.

That seems to be the message I'm getting form the voting results...blacks vote for blacks...so I suppose whites should vote for whites.

Every time a news anchor or guest speaks about voting results THEY MAKE SURE WE UNDERSTAND that blacks are voting for blacks. So much for eqaulity in this contry. That's a shame.

I think you missed the point of his message, which to me is that the lines of race have been largely generational by degree, and are becoming more and more blurred.

When he speaks of his Grandmother, it was, and is typical of her age and generation to express the feelings which she did. I bet she so adored her Grandson, she could ot begin to put her feelings in context, as considering him a black man. My family too, expressed the same feelings toward other races, blacks and especially Japanese, as my Uncle had been killed in WW11 by the Japanese.
My family never recovered from this loss. But they were also isolated in a midwest (Nebraska) faming community. I lived in a large metro area in Northern California and saw other races as my peers.
My children were raised to be race/color blind, everyone equal. They have lived this way at home and in the colleges they attended, their experiences being so very different from that of my rural Nebraska relatives.

The point is: The world is constantly changing and we are evolving with it. We have so many serious problems isn't it time to let go of such arbitrary ways of judging each other as race?

And you sold out your soul long time ago Mr. Hitchens when you changed sides.

Just remember that Hitchens supported the invasion of Iraq. And as a strident, fulminating atheist, he has nothing but name calling for anyone who has religious inclincations. No matter what Wright would preach or the style of his preaching, Hitchens would attack him.

I do not want Barak Obama for President and now that I know that he actually attends the vitriolic hate speeches by Black pseudo men of the cloth, hypocrites, charlatans, and a religious fraud that are at least one of Obama's purported "ministers?" - I do not want him or his associates in any part of the government. There is a Black malevolent mafia operating in America which inflicts as much destruction in the faith of the government as possible. Their racial malevolence is manifest in a single California's court, where its Black clerks dominate. Despite this city's racial diversity, the court is dominated by only one segment of the population. Black hate speech committed by so-called ministers is rampant in the Bay Area of California. I detest it. I detest the whites who participate in such speech.

As the minister in question, Nelson Mandela came to Berkeley once, after having been freed and all he spoke of was hateful towards the people he calls whites. Young white men were cheering each epithet of hatred towards the whites. Did Mandela have any formula for race relations?
This minister - I call a charlatan - is exploiting the need by Blacks to vent, and exploits a single or few experiences from Barak Obama's life to make money.
Obama must distance himself from hate makers and stand down hate mongering, regardless of where it might originate. He is not worthy of a Presidency if he won't avoid exploiting hate.

Few of us that participate here would deny our vote based upon the Wright issue. The centrist's or right leaners are those most likely affected. This matter will haunt Obama up to, if not beyond, November 4th.
