Is "Success" Of Iraq Surge About To Unravel?

A cease-fire with Muqtada al Sadr and his loyalists in the Mahd army is showing signs of deterioration. The agreement, which has been critical to the improved security situation in Iraq, has shown signs of unraveling as his supporters shut down parts of Baghdad as part of a nationwide campaign of civil disobedience:

On Sunday, a barrage of at least 17 rockets hit the heavily fortified Green Zone and surrounding neighborhoods, where both the U.S. and Iraqi government headquarters are housed, according to police. Most of them were launched from the outskirts of Sadr City and Bayaa, both Mahdi Army-controlled neighborhoods.

On Monday, the Sadrists all but shut down the neighborhoods they control on the west bank of Baghdad. Gunmen went to stores and ordered them to close as militiamen stood in the streets. Mosques used their loudspeakers to urge people to come forward and join the protest.

Fliers were distributed with the Sadrists' three demands of the Iraqi government: to release detainees, stop targeting Sadrist members and apologize to the families and the tribal sheiks of the men.

Meanwhile, Iraq security forces clashed with militias in Basra, a stronghold of the Mahdi army:

Al-Sadr's headquarters in Najaf also ordered field commanders with his Mahdi Army militia to go on maximum alert and prepare "to strike the occupiers" -- a term used to describe U.S. forces -- and their Iraqi allies, a militia officer said. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn't supposed to release the information....

In Basra, Iraqi soldiers and police battled Mahdi fighters for control of key neighborhoods in Iraq's second-largest city, 340 miles southeast of Baghdad. The fighting erupted a day after al-Maliki flew there to supervise a security crackdown against the militias.

Police and hospital officials reported that at least 22 people had been killed and 58 wounded in the clashes. Iraqi authorities on Monday imposed an indefinite nighttime curfew on the city.

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Shiite militias have seized control of checkpoints and have begun stockpiling weapons:

Fighting broke out Tuesday on the streets of Sadr City, an area controlled by Shiite firebrand cleric Muqtada al Sadr, and the Mahdi Army militia announced it had taken over Iraqi army checkpoints in an escalation of tension with Iraqi government security forces.

The sound of gunfire could be heard in Sadr City throughout the morning and Mahdi Army members walked down the streets carrying rifles, rocket-propelled grenade launchers and other weapons in what appeared to be a show of force, according to two witnesses. It is unclear whether the men were legitimate Mahdi Army members or part of a faction that has broken from Mr. Sadr....

Residents in two Shiite-controlled neighborhoods here said Monday that armed militias have taken over rooms in several schools and stocked them with rockets, in a sign they could be gearing up for more attacks against the U.S.-backed government. On Tuesday, Mahdi Army members told employees at local ministry offices in Sadr City, such as the Ministry of Education, to go home, according to witnesses.

You simply cannot drink the kool-aid that is being shoved down your throat 24/7 ... there comes a time when you can no longer tolerate propaganda and must face the Truth, no matter what it is. And here is the Truth: the government of the United States of America was seized by a group of pretenders who thrust it into a war of conquest for their own personal gain. Perhaps they thought it would be easy; perhaps they just mean it when they say, "'So?'" {That one word, by the way, will soon gain history alongside "Let Them Eat Cake."} But the Persians did not walk into the puppet-chamber right on cue and sign away their birthright like they were "supposed" to. They fought back in a relentless guerrilla resistance-movement that does not respect the borderlines drawn in the 1920's. They're fighting for their homeland and for their treasure and they will not stop doing so. And that fight is just about to involve Y-O-U. As in "every man OR woman from age 18 to 42," as spelled out in the National Service Act of 2007 which is ON the books right now waiting to be quietly signed. If this makes you uncomfortable .. well ... 'So?'

Brilliant. Invade the country. Try to take it over and take control of their oil. People fight back. Uh oh...
Things get bad. Things get much worse. Things get absolutely horrific.

Send in more troops. That's not enough. Wall off thousands of streets in all of Iraq's major population centers. That's not enough. Pay the Shites and let them build up their own militias. Pay the Sunnis and let them build up their own militias. Pay the Kurds and let them...uh, but what about Turkey?

Okay---have we managed to put our finger in the dike? Good!!! Now let's tell the media and the American public the following, "THE SURGE IS WORKING!!! THINGS ARE GETTING BETTER!!! WE'RE MAKING PROGRESS!!! THE SURGE IS WORKING!!! THE IRAQIS ARE HELPING US NOW!!!..."

Uh, wait. You mean our finger in the dike isn't enough? How about my entire hand? Wait. That's not enough. Oh boy...Uh, what about my whole arm? Will that hold it back? (Oh, please, please hold until the November elections!!!) Uh, what did you say? You need me to stick my whole body in the dike to hold it back? What if the dike breaks? What if the water overflows?

How much longer will we allow the corporate controlled media to keep feeding us a pack of lies? Will we allow them to keep it up all the way to November?

Any slowdown of the hostilities toward the American occupiers in Iraq is an illusion. The fact is that the "enemy" are the invaders and the Iraqis can hang back for months, or even years, waiting for the invaders to leave, then carry on their civil war, settling it in their own way.
They don't have Bush's timetable for his legacy to consider.
While the Americans are arguing about whether or not a timetable is appropriate, the Iraqis are in their own country and have as much time as this takes to settle.

The surge may have been the latest strategy that the invaders have used to attempt to "win" some sort of victory. There is no victory to be had, unfortunately, by either side. But the country will inevitably go back to control by their citizens.

Who of anyone following this war and the slightest knowledge of the history of the region, recent oar long past, could possibly believe things wouldn't come apart despite our best efforts? The killer bees are out of the hive. They will attack anything that gets in their way. Unfortunately it required Saddam to keep them under control, but we tipped over the nests.

A huge American army in the middle of Arabia is the cause of all the violence. Remove the American military presence and the violence will stop. It's very simple, really. But then Haliburton, Blackwater, et al, would not be making these obscene profits and The dickster's Haliburton stock would plummet. It is now and always has been a rich mans war and a poor mans fight. The wheel of history just keeps going around.

Al-Sard may have made a secret pact with Iran to take Basra and Najaf. The British allowed this to happen by leaving prematurely. Al-Sadr is hoping that the U.S. attacks Iran, so he can attack the U.S. Al-Maliki does not appear in control: he may be forced to partition Iraq now with U.S. help!

Only a Republican would think that an additional 30,000 troops would be enough to reconcile 25 million people who have a thousand year history of sectarian suspicion and hatred.

The SURGEon is Working

The surge has long outlived its use as the U.S. generals were sleeping on the rudder! The surge is now bearing fruits! The government of al-Maliki must prove that it has used the surge! If it did not, Iraq better be dissolved into three parts! I have advocated partition for four years now!

You all are getting off message again.
Who cares if the surge is "working" or not?
We shouldn't be there and we need to leave!

We just need to surge to the South. It's our "whack-a-mole" strategery.

When you pay people not to attack you, expect some difficult salary negotiations.

Whole new meaning to the concept of a "strike".

Didn't we send our Marines to the shores of Tripoli

because we refused to pay tributes to the pirates?
