I Like ItI Don’t Like It

When Vogue announced its April cover starring LeBron James and Gisele Bundchen, the magazine noted with some fanfare that James was the first black man to grace its cover.

But the image is stirring up controversy, with some commentators decrying the photo as perpetuating racial stereotypes. James strikes what some see as a gorilla-like pose, baring his teeth, with one hand dribbling a ball and the other around Bundchen's tiny waist.

It's an image some have likened to "King Kong" and Fay Wray.

"It conjures up this idea of a dangerous black man," said Tamara Walker, 29, of Philadelphia.

Photographer Annie Leibovitz shot the 6-foot-9 NBA star and the 5-foot-11 Brazilian model for the cover and an inside spread. Vogue spokesman Patrick O'Connell said the magazine "sought to celebrate two superstars at the top of their game" for the magazine's annual issue devoted to size and shape.

"We think Lebron James and Gisele Bundchen look beautiful together and we are honored to have them on the cover," he said.

James told The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer he was pleased with the cover, saying he was "just showing a little emotion."

"Everything my name is on is going to be criticized in a good way or bad way," James told the paper. "Who cares what anyone says?"

But magazine analyst Samir Husni believes the photo was deliberately provocative, adding that it "screams King Kong." Considering Vogue's influential history, he said, covers are not something that the magazine does in a rush.

"So when you have a cover that reminds people of King Kong and brings those stereotypes to the front, black man wanting white woman, it's not innocent," he said.

O'Connell, the Vogue spokesman, declined further comment.

In a column at ESPN.com, Jemele Hill called the cover "memorable for all the wrong reasons." But she said in an interview that the image is not unusual -- white athletes are generally portrayed smiling or laughing, while black sports figures are given a "beastly sort of vibe."

For example, former NBA star Charles Barkley was depicted breaking free of neck and wrist shackles on the cover of Sports Illustrated. Dennis Rodman graced the cover of Rolling Stone with horns poking out of his forehead and his red tongue hanging out.

Images of black male athletes as aggressive and threatening "reinforce the criminalization of black men," said Damion Thomas, assistant professor in the Department of Kinesiology at University of Maryland.

But others say the image show James' game face -- nothing more. And they note that Bundchen hardly looks frightened.

"James is a huge, black beautiful masculine statue and Gisele is a feminine, sexy gorgeous doll," said Christa Thomas, 36, a black account supervisor in Los Angeles.

"I didn't see any kind of racist overtone to it," she said. "I still don't. I think there is such a hypersensitivity to race still in this country."

Husni said it is too soon to know how the magazine is selling, though the controversy could increase sales as people rush out to get a "collector's edition."

If nothing else, Walker said the cover underscores the need for a more diverse workplace.

"If more people of color worked for Vogue in positions of editorial authority, perhaps someone in the room might have been able to read the image the way so many of us are reading it now, and had the power to do something about it," she said.

I am personally offended. If you pay attention to the text in this issue you will most likely notice the black type plastered all over the mostly white pages. I don't think you need to be a rocket scientist or Yale grad to recognize the overt attempt by the publisher to promote the obvious hierarchy that exists between text and background. If this attempt by Vogue to continue "brainwashing" the reader into viewing these pages as "socially acceptable norms" continues...well, look out!

Oh BTW, if this idea makes in onto FOX News...I want credit!

There are so many problems with this:
1. Maybe if Lebron went to college and expanded his education he would have recognized the racial undertones and could see the bigger picture here. Appearing as the first black man on Vogue, this image leaves a bad taste for generations.

2. My respect for Annie Leibovitz has diminished. As the woman who photographed Queen Elizabeth, Demi Moore, Tom and Katie with baby Suri, she is very particular about how her images are preceived. She should either have known better or knew exactly what this image said.

3. Vogue is in some desperate need of diversity in their newsrooms.

4. This is only an example of how Barack Obama's speech on race was so right and so significant. We as as society always manage to take two steps forward and one step back.

This is getting absolutely ridiculous. It's at the point now where there are these media people lying awake at night thinking of ways to inject negativity into our lives. Where do we draw the line between free press/free speech and reaching for nothing? COMPLETE NONSENSE. This kind of press is what is molding the minds of the people (particularly the young people) of this country. We have brains, we don't want to be told what to think, and most of all THIS IS NOT A RACIST COVER!!!!! We all have our opinions, and in MY opinion, this is just negative, unproductive, and gets us all NOWHERE. ENOUGH ALREADY!!!!

I agree. This is silly. It's a cool cover. People are going over the edge.

Actually, LeBron looks LARGER than usual. Is THAT racist??? And btw, it's a lame Annie Leibovitz shot too. Regarding Charles Barkley and Dennis Rodman, they've always been nutty personalities off the basketball court and the contention by Damion Thomas that they were portrayed unfairly is bullshit. They are cartoonish characters, created and manipulated by their own hand. Has Professor Thomas ever seen any of Barkley's TV commercials? He's a goofball in every one. And there's nothing normal about Dennis Rodman ... by his own design. For heaven's sake, this was the guy who showed up at his own book signing in a wedding dress .. a WHITE wedding dress. Was that racist too?

Next thing you know, Wintour will have a cover of her daughter holding hands with her lover Shelby Bryan's son. The issue's theme can be incest, or maybe nepotism, especially since Wintour got both her lover's children jobs at Conde Nast magazines.

Anyone who see James as King Kong is a racist. It's that simple.
He's beautiful and so is the Vogue cover.

I agree with those who find no problem here. After all, it's not as though Vogue has absolute control. I'll bet dollars to donuts that Lebron chose this photo or at the very least, agreed to it specifically. I'd go further to say that those who see something racist in it should probably be looking inward.
BTW, I'm a little old white guy and I would LOVE to be the subject of that picture. It occurs to me that that might be at least one test...

Now excuse me, I have to work on my jumper...

As a black man, I don't have a problem with it. It seems more humorous than anything, a way of saying in your face stereotype or not we are here. Precisely because it is a stereotype gives it cause for fun, almost saying your worst fears have come true, ready or not. It mocks stereotypes.

As a white woman I'm sensitive to the fact that many African American women resent white women who date and/or marry "their" men. It's possible I'm being way overly-sensitive here, but I question why a magazine would do something that fuels these fires. Why can't people just be more sensitive to the feelings of others? Why can't we just all get along and move forward together? :- (

As a black man I think you are nuts. That is the most unflattering posture he could have had. If the intent was to show him as animal - it succeeded. He will be the laughingstock of the league, if not all of sport. P-A-T-H-E-T-I-C!

I'm a black man too.

Hell, if I was been paid what LeBron makes in a year and adored by 100's of millions of fans around the world then they could have put me on the cover with a plate of fried chicken and a watermelon while I'm doing a jig in a cotton patch wearing a t-shirt that says 'Doo Dah Doo Dah' in big purple letters on the front.

When will these stereotypes actually become obsolete ? I saw the cover in the grocery store yesterday and I saw an athelete and a model.

Seriously! I'm not a black man, but I'm Hispanic... I know a thing or two about stereotypes.

There is absolutly nothing wrong with this picture. This is the kind of attitude Lebron has in the Basketball court. I'm sure there are no Publishers and photographers telling Lebron James how to act in the court.

This is just an amazing athlete having a good time with a HOT girl!

It's sad to see how a society that lives in a country with "everything" is wasting its time on something that is of very little - or none - concern in countries that don't have the same opportunites Americans do.

Ridiculous! Now I've heard everything. My first thought when I saw this cover was "Great Athlete posing with beautiful model" period. end of story. It's a shame that at least one of the critics (Jemele Hill) is a black woman. She's essentially saying "Hey gang, just in case you didn't notice. James looks like a big ape." I disagree. He looks like the bad-ass basketball great that he is. I'm of Mexican descent and I wouldn't be offended if Vogue featured Salma Hayek wearing huarache sandals, but Lord knows that some critic (more than likely a Latino/Latina) would scream that the editors of Vogue wanted her to look like an immigrant. Enough already! I'm off to Chipotle.

This is why political correctness should be outlawed. EVERY DAY it goes just a little bit further. Now a guy can't even pose for a magazine cover without someone getting "upset". I think it's a great picture, and the whole "King Kong" thing didn't even cross my mind till I read this. Hell, even when I saw the headline on HuffPo, I thought it was gonna be some moron who was arguing that a black guy shouldn't be posing with a white woman because it perpetuates THAT stereotype. Then I went on to read that it was an even bigger moron.

If the death of "political correctness" is a consequence of the dialogue begun by the Obama speech, then I will say that the pain caused by the Rev. Wright fiasco was worth it.

Outlaw political correctness? Boy what kneejerk thing to say. Its also hyprocritical. If youre against people saying what should and shouldnt be how can you suggest outlawing that they saying express such things? Wouldnt you be doing the exact same thing youre against? And besides "political correctness" is way to vague a thing to even try to outlaw. What exactly would you outlaw?

More than anything else, the picture looks silly. What are they supposed to be doing anyway? When I first heard LeBron James was going to be on the cover of Vogue, I thought he would be in a suit -- I mean, it IS a fashion magazine. If I want to see him with a basketball, I'll watch a Cavaliers game.

Oh come on now! How is this racist? I'm 49 and African American. This is not racist to ME. Who is thinking this stuff up? LeBron is smater enough to know that it doesn't hurt to be on the cover of a popular magazine with a well known beautiful model. If it had been Halle Berrry instead then what would be said. Who ever wants to see this as racist should really check themselves and re-evaluate. We have come further than thinking two celebrities of different color aren't doing anything but promoting themselves and getting paid. Please whoever is promoting this feeble minded thinking STOP!!!! As a NATION we are better than this.

" I'm 49 and African American. This is not racist to ME."

Because only people that are race sensitive see things like this as racist. Normal Americans laugh at the thought of it saying "you got that from that?"

There will always be those people that you have to shake your head at.

NOW, you're talking. Well said. Some people just look for racism in everything, no matter what is actually going on.

I can see where some can feel that this is racist, by him being in sports attire and not a suit. Vogue being a fashion magazine, it seems fitting that he would dress accordingly. With that being said, I don't see anything racist with this photo at all. However, there are some who still have a problem with inter-racial couples-so this add fuel to their flames! With all the racial undertones going on right now, this cover might be a bit touchy!

I'll see your 49 and raise you 55. If you have ever seen a basketball game, you never have seen a player scream while dribbling(bouncing) the ball. The primal scream is used on a dunk. This cover is totally tasteless and does perpetuate stereotypes. Racist? Who cares? It's just WRONG!

Just out of curiosity, how F***ing tall is SHE? If he's 6'9" with him barely crouching, she's almost as tall as him. Must be a trick of perspective.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 01:55 PM on 03/25/2008

If you read the article, it states that she is 5'11". You know, model height!

She's at the very least 6 feet--but he is crouched at the knee and bent forward in the shoulders. which lessens the disparity in height. She is very thin, which also makes her look taller.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 02:44 PM on 03/25/2008

Since the article specifies that she's 5' 11", I'd go with that.
