Obama Taxes

Barack Obama has released his tax returns from 2000 through 2006, and has promptly called on Sen. Clinton to do the same.

Find the tax returns here.

The Clinton camp has responded with a list of examples where Obama has not been transparent with his personal records.

From the Obama camp:

Obama Posts Tax Returns on the Internet, Calls on Clinton to Follow Suit Immediately

CHICAGO, IL--Senator Barack Obama today posted his tax returns from 2000-2006 on his campaign website, demonstrating his continued commitment to transparency in government and changing business as usual in Washington. The returns are complete, including all schedules, and are now available to anyone to view. The Obama campaign urged Senator Clinton to join Senator Obama in making her returns public.

Full disclosure on Senator Clinton's part is especially important because she recently loaned $5 million to her campaign, shortly after revelations surfaced that her husband was to receive a $20 million payout from Yucaipa, a supermarket holding company that invests in tax shelters in the Cayman Islands.

Senator Clinton has agreed to release her returns, but will only offer a target date at least three days before the Pennsylvania primary, and has not specified the level of detail.

"Senator Clinton recently claimed that she's 'the most transparent figure in public life,' yet she's dragging her feet in releasing something as basic as her annual tax returns," said Obama Communications Director Robert Gibbs. "Senator Clinton can't claim to be vetted until she allows the public the opportunity to see her finances--particularly with respect to any investment in tax shelters."

Story continues below

The Clinton campaign's vague commitment to release the returns and the Clintons' known involvement with such investments as Yucaipa raise a number of questions.

1. Yucaipa Has A Financial Stake In Three Investment Entities Registered In The Cayman Islands. "Securities and Exchange Commission documents and financial- disclosure forms filed by Hillary Clinton show that Bill Clinton, 61, has a financial stake in three investment entities registered in the Cayman Islands by Burkle's Yucaipa Cos. LLC. In 2004, Hillary Clinton, a New York senator, said she wanted to close the ``loopholes'' for ``people who create a mailbox, or a drop, or send one person to sit on the beach in some island paradise and claim that it is their offshore headquarters.'' [Bloomberg, 12/17/07]

à Question: If elected President, would Sen. Clinton propose or support legislation to block or curb any of Yucaipa's current business or tax strategies?

2. Clinton Spokesman Claimed That Yucaipa Is Registered In Cayman So That Bill Clinton Can Pay US Taxes. "Jay Carson, a Clinton spokesman, said that while the former president hasn't ``severed ties'' with Yucaipa, he ``is taking steps to ensure'' that ``there will be an appropriate transition for those relationships'' if his wife receives the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination. Carson, in an e-mail, said the funds are designed for foreign investors. ``All three of these entities (which are related) are organized in the Cayman Islands so that each investor or partner pays the taxes they would owe in their home country,'' he said. ``For U.S. citizens like Bill Clinton, that means he pays U.S. taxes on his income from this fund, which he does.'' [Bloomberg, 12/17/07]

à Question: Did Bill Clinton participate in the decision for Yucaipa to register any of these funds in the Cayman Islands? If so, did he argue for or against?

3. Clinton Spokesperson Will Not Answer Questions On Whether Bill Clinton Receives Equity Instead Of Cash, Allowing Him To Pay The Lower 15 % Capital Gains Tax Rate Instead Of Higher Income Tax Rate. "Carson said Bill Clinton's payments from Yucaipa aren't deferred and the former president pays tax on that income in the year in which it is earned. Steven Howard, a partner at Thacher Proffitt & Wood LLP in New York who advises investment firms, said private-equity firms such as Yucaipa often compensate advisers with a stake in the company rather than salary. ``In Clinton's case, he may be allocated equity instead of significant cash for services rendered,'' Howard said. Carson didn't respond to questions about whether Bill Clinton receives this form of compensation. Howard said equity allocations are taxed at the 15 percent capital-gains rate instead of as ordinary income, which is taxed at rates as high as 35 percent. He said the same benefit applies to so-called carried interest, a profit-sharing arrangement used by fund managers that Hillary Clinton and other Democrats have criticized and vow to curb." [Bloomberg, 12/17/07]

à Question: Is Bill Clinton allocated equity? What is the effective tax rate that Bill Clinton pays on all income or gains from Yucaipa?

4. Clintons Won't Explain Why Yucaipa Was Listed On Disclosure Forms As Based In Los Angeles Rather Than Cayman; Won't Disclose When Sen. Clinton Became Aware Of Husband's Offshore Deals. "Bloomberg's questions to the campaign involved the nature and amounts of his compensation from Yucaipa, why the holdings were listed as Los Angeles-based rather than Cayman Islands entities, and when Hillary Clinton became aware that the funds were offshore. Carson didn't address those questions. Yucaipa spokesman Frank Quintero referred all questions about the former president's role to the Clintons' spokespeople." [Bloomberg, 12/17/07]

à Question: Why do the Clintons consider Yucaipa to be a Los Angeles-based company when it is actually based in the Cayman Islands?

à Question: Why were the Clintons unable to answer the media's questions in mid-December 2007?

Ironically, Senator Clinton herself made the release of her opponent's tax returns a central issue when she ran for the Senate in 2000. Numerous Democratic presidential candidates in recent years have released their tax returns, including Senator Kerry, Senator Edwards, General Clark, Senator Lieberman, and Congressman Kucinich.

With the next primary only weeks away and sure to see significant spending from the Clinton campaign, now is the time for Senator Clinton to keep faith with the voters, release her tax returns, and allow these questions to be answered in full. In the meantime, you can view Senator Obama's 2000-2006 tax returns HERE.

Clinton has claimed that releasing her tax returns is unnecessary because she has filed the personal financial disclosure forms that all Senators are required by to submit. But there are key facts that the personal financial disclosure form alone does not disclose, including:

Ø The amount the Clintons make as a couple;
Ø Senator and President Clinton's effective tax rate;
Ø What loopholes, if any, they used to reduce it;
Ø The actual amount of President Clinton's income and not just the range;
Ø What stock have they sold, and how much did they made from it;
Ø The amount they made from their stock dividends;
Ø The deductions they took for losses related to stock sales;
Ø The household employment taxes they paid for employees;
Ø The personal exemptions they took; and
Ø The charitable contributions they have made.

Well,
Maybe I'm naive - but this is the issue that I've always felt would finally bring Clinton down. This is
a fabulous, certainly well-thought-out detailed request. I cannot wait to see Hillary's come out BEFORE
Pennsylvania (and not three days before). I think they're at the end of the road for more reasons that one.

About time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I hate negative politics. But, the tax return is something that hillary is hiding from. This may seem negative, but I would argue that Obama needs to go hard on this issue and indicate that during the debate that she has hidden the tax return from, to go all out on them. Running a clean administration is the core of his beliefs as president. That makes it fair game if she has money to hide or donors to hide ect...........herself or her husband. "Oh, I'll just write a check...will 5mil cover it for now"

Hellooooooo....Obama has been calling for hers for months and accusing her of hiding something. He JUST released his own. I've said many times on this post that he had only released his 2006 return and he was out-of-line with his demands. She has already said she is releasing hers, and before she needs to. Only Presidential Candidates (those are the two nominees, of which we currently have NONE) are obligated to release their returns. Even McCain is not yet officially a nominee, and he's refused to release his.

HILLARY CLINTON=RICHARD NIXON & SPIRO AGNEW IN A PANT SUIT. The Clintons are CROOKS. Plain and simple. How do politicians who have NO FAMILY BUSINESS or entrepreneurial enterprise oher than POLITICS & "PHILANTHROPY" (See: The Clinton Global Initiative) become RICH and increase their income and net worth more than 1,000% in a 4 year period? Ask yourself, whether the Clintons who SOLD the last Whitehouse on the way out, have pre-sold the next Clinton Administration.

I just hope that when the two camps finishing playing "one up" on each other, that is is enough of a Democratic party to win in November.

This does not look good for Hillary. It's becoming rather obvious that she is hiding something or is sitting on info that could raise serious questions about her immediately. The average Joe will not be able to make sense of this, BUT their are people out here who get paid to comb throgh these documents and make the connections. Hillary may have thrown the kitchen sink, but now she is getting sprayed by the loose pipes. I bet she will think twice next time before slinging mud into the wind.

Senator Clinton is known to be a woman of her word (sic), so I fully expect her to follow through and show Americans where she and President Clinton got their money from. I believe everything this woman says, so I am waiting....

This is pretty funny. Hillary spokesperson Phil Singer blasted out an email at 11:23 insisting that Obama release his tax returns for back years,

Exactly two minutes later, at 11:25, Obama spokesperson Tommy Vietor emailed out word that Obama had posted his tax returns for 2000-2006 on his campaign web site. Turns out the Obama camp has been planning this for some time.

I think Clinton has aksed for his returns for ALL years of elective office including ILL state senate. He does always use those years to claim he has held elective office longer than Clinton has.

How anyone could stand up for Hillary on this issue is beyond me. Why only three days before the primary? The returns are so hard to pull up, but you know you'll have them 3 days before the primary? Covenient that that doesn't leave enough time for anyone to digest and disseminate relevant information to the voters. What is she hiding? She's so full of it ... it's sooo hard to stomach these days. And to think that so many of us used to be huge Clinton supporters. She's killed the Clinton brand. Time to move on ...

Tacky attack strategy. She said April 15th. He's just trying to slime her. This kind of stuff won't work. He demanded her dayplanner. Reporters just leaped on where she was during the Lewinsky. Proved her right. Those documents were always for Historians. The press corps is superficial, at best. So he got 2 days of headlines about the blue dress, had to disavow yet another supporters. This crap is not relevant to voters. We already know that Bill bopped Monica. What we are interested in is solutions to our problems. ANd that's not about the past. That's about .......right now. And I, for sure, do not care that Bill did well financially. I hope he did. So did Reagan. So did Gore. And I don't begrudge our presidents the right to make money. I DO dislike sliming someone on character without good reason. Obama is a slug.

"Obama is a slug."

Now you've descended to juvenile name-calling? I guess these are stressful times.

Though, to be accurate, Bill did not "bop" Monica. At least not as far as I know.

While I can understand the reason for releasing the 2007 tax return on or about April 15th. Please explain why it is acceptable to you that she has not released returns from years past? And I beg to differ, Bill Clinton's sweetheart deals that may curry favor in a prospective Hillary Clinton administration are extremely relevant. We've suffered enough as a nation because of cronyism and no-bid contracts. Research KBR and Halliburton and Cheney if you don't know what I mean.

The week that your candidate had been caught at being a bold faced liar, you call her rival a slug?

We want those tax returns not because they made money, but because there is little doubt that the manner in which they earned it will involve some kind of slimy, semi-corrupt, or unethical behavior.

There is a reason they are one step away of an indictment, they live just on the edge of breaking the law. How can these be characteristics that you find attractive in a president!?

FINAL REPORT of the COMMITTEE ON GOVERNMENTAL AFFAIRS
SENATE Rept. 105-167 - 105th Congress 2d Session - March 10, 1998

http://www.fas.org/irp/congress/1998_rpt/sgo-sir/2-20.htm

Cross reference date April 4, 1996

http://www.judicialwatch.org/cl-hrc-calendars

on April 4 with Harold Ickes, White House Deputy Chief of Staff and the White House
supervisor of the President's re-election effort, and Mrs.
Clinton to discuss the Trie-related contributions to the Trust.
Cardozo began the meeting by telling the First Lady that
someone from Arkansas had delivered a large number of checks to
the Trust and asked her to guess who it was. When she failed to
do so, Cardozo mentioned the name Charlie Trie. Mrs. Clinton
hesitated, then recalled him as the owner of a restaurant in
Little Rock frequented by then Governor Clinton.
