Obama Taxes

Sen. Barack Obama released seven years of prior tax return documents on Tuesday. And a review of the records reveals several newsworthy, albeit minor, disclosures.

Up until recent years when their income increased sharply from book revenues and a Senate salary, Obama's family donated a relatively minor amount of its earnings to charity. From 2000 through 2004, the senator and his wife never gave more than $3,500 a year in charitable donations -- about 1 percent of their annual earnings. In 2005, however, that total jumped to $77,315 (4.7 percent of annual earnings), and to $60,307 in 2006 (6.1 percent).

The money went to several organizations. More than $27,000 total was given to Obama's church, Trinity United Church of Christ, whose former pastor Jeremiah Wright has dominated recent news coverage. Other charity gifts included: Muntu Dance Theater, a Chicago-based company that performs contemporary and classic African dance, which received a $5,000 donation; The Rochelle Lee Fund, a literacy organization, which received a $20,000 donation; the Illinois Reading Council, which received a $25,000 donation, and CARE, the poverty fighting organization, which received a total of $31,000 in donations.

Obama also classified a $13,107 contribution to the Congressional Black Caucus as a charity gift.

Taken as a whole, these disbursements made up a small portion of Obama's annual income. According to TaxProf Blog, the Illinois senator gave "well short of the biblical 10% tithe for all seven years."

"As new parents who were paying off their large student loans, giving $10,000 to charity [from 2000 to 2004] was as generous as they could be at the time," said Obama spokesman Bill Burton.

The release of Obama's tax returns represents another step in the campaign's effort to push the issue of transparency in the nomination battle against Sen. Hillary Clinton. The New York Democrat has not released her tax return information from the years following her departure from the White House (she has released returns corresponding to the 20 years prior). Her campaign promised to make her tax information public at least three days prior to the Pennsylvania primary on April 20.

While political observers are eager to see how former president Bill Clinton's profited off his post-White House fame, the Obama disclosures underscore the story of a relatively obscure and unknown state senator rising rapidly to national prominence.

Indeed, perhaps the only other of interesting news to be gleamed from a review of the Obama tax returns is that Michelle Obama made $12,000 more than previously known from the organization Treehouse Foods.

Why is that significant? Treehouse, an Illinois food-processing company on which Michelle Obama served as a board member, is one of the biggest suppliers of pickles and peppers to WalMart, the retail giant that is often loathed in progressive circles.

According to Obama's 2007 tax returns, Michelle earned $51,200 from the company and 7,500 Treehouse stock options. This is relatively minor stuff considering the degree of separation from WalMart itself (Sen. Hillary Clinton, for one, served on WalMart's board while she was first lady of Arkansas), but already Obama's critics have used it against him.

"The Obamas would have us believe that, when it comes to money and ethics and compassion, he is a different kind of politician," Chicago political consultant Joe Novak said in a May 2007 article in the London Telegraph. "[But] defending Treehouse while attacking Wal-Mart is a blatant example of personal hypocrisy."

I guess they just couldn't find anything to knock him on so they decided to pick on his charitable contributions. How juvenile is that?

Very impressed that Obama put his tax out there for all to see. Where is Clinton's and McCain's?

Walmart's treatment of it employees has nothing to do with it's vendors. Now, being on the board of Walmart? That's quite a bit different.

It's unfair to compare Clinton-Walmart to Obama-Treehouse.

Hillary presents herself as in support of the average working American and yet was unwilling to confront corporate power while she was on the board of Walmart. She did nothing to push for better benefits for Walmart employees while she was on the board and was silent int he face of its anti-union rhetoric.

The problem isn't Walmart per se, but the fact that Hillary always tries to have it both ways. She says one thing but when she had the opportunity to actually do something, she did nothing.

It's silly to think there's something outrageous about being on the boards of either Walmart or Treehouse. What's bad is to claim to stand for one thing when your actions show just the opposite.

Michelle Obama left Treehouse when it became clear that it could ptentially conflict with her husband's political positions, not her own, as she's never been in politics. And this was the appropriate thing to do. There was nothing in and of itself wrong with being on the board of Treehouse. It's simply obtuse to drag it down to that level. I have no problem with Hillary being on the board of Walmart. The problem is that her performance there BELIES her assertions that she'll stand up to corporate interests to fight for working class Americans.

Contrast these number with Dick and Lynne Cheney. In 2005, the Cheneys gave more than three-quarters of their income - $6,869,655 - to several charities, including George Washington University's Cardiothoracic Institute and a charity for low-income high school students in the Washington, D.C. area, Capital Partners for Education.

Manufacturing a product that is sold by Wal-Mart is completely different than working on the board of Wal-Mart for 6 years and actively working against worker's rights.

Is this the best that the Clintons can do? That's pretty damn sad.

It wasn't even manufactured it was a food product. But you are spot on. Clinton was on Walmart's board when they decided to buy most of their manufactured products from China. Bill gets elected and gives China favored nation trading status. Then Bill gets a large amount of his donations from the Chinese which they got caught on in his second campaign. The Clintons are so corrupt they don't know whats up or down anymore. That's why Bill's donors for the Clinton library and foundation must be released as well as their tax returns.

A couple who believes in paying off student loans and other bills while raising two kids, yet still finding a way to give somemoney to charity. If he leads our budget like this, we are in great hands.

Take note fellow Americans. This is what we all should strive to do and appreciate in a presidential candidate. Look at our most recent presidents; Bushes (old money), Clinton, Reagan (Hollywood money)... we could actually elect someone who better understands the struggles, even amongst the college educated, to prioritize a budget and then share/donate more once you start earning more.

This whole guilt-by-association connection between Wal mart and a supplier is bogus. Wal mart is anti-labor but it is also anti-supplier. The purchasing department is a goliath that plays incredible hardball with suppliers and squeezes them for everything they can. Being a supplier to walmart means you are a victim of the goliath, not its accomplice.

A fantastic observation which makes Stein's last paragraph quite strange. Yet, in this 24/7 news cycle such fallacy can grow and become real for those in the Clinton camp wishing to counter Hillary's real connection to Wal-Mart.

I cannot believe how people and the media takes everything out of context. Michele works for a company that sells products to Walmart, now the Obama's are hypocrites, give me break.

She didn't work for Pickle&Pepper, she sat on the Board of Directors and got paid $50k for it. She also made over $300k from her real job as a hospital administrator.

In fact, Michelle resigned from the Treehouse Board, so the Obama's have put their money where their mouths are.

A bigger problem for Obama is that he has stated that he will not shop at Wal*Mart. This may be evidence that he hates America. After all, doesn't their buying stuff from China provide them with the cash to bankroll our war in Iraq? I mean, if Wal*Mart doesn't sell it, why should you want it?

Please make sure you scrutinize the Clinton's and McCain's tax records as well...and highlight the percentage of their tithe. Wait - they didn't release their tax returns. Well, when and if they ever do, make sure you apply the same journalistic integrity,ok?

You don't mean that Senator "Gonna Save the World" doesn't tithe? EeK! And the Mrs. has a WalMart connection? I refuse to believe it. Obama is without defect. He is exemplary. This is obviously a Clintonista plot. They stole his returns and altered them. There can be no other explanation.
(I just thought I'd have a little Kool-Aid to go with dinner.)

How much do you give to charity each year? If it's less than $3500, sit the hell down.
