On Tuesday, Sen. Hillary Clinton re-stoked the flames of the controversy surrounding Sen. Barack Obama's former pastor, saying she would have long ago distanced herself from Rev. Jeremiah Wright if she had attended his church.

"He would not have been my pastor," Clinton told a gathering of the campaign press corps, repeating a line she used earlier in the day on a Pittsburgh radio program. "You don't choose your family, but you choose what church you want to attend."

But the pastor at the church that Clinton did once attend has recently expressed public support for Wright. He's even proclaimed it a "grave injustice" to make a judgment on Wright based off of "two or three sound bites," and criticized those who would "use a few of [Wright's] quotes to polarize."

Last week, Dean Snyder, the senior minister at the Foundry United Methodist Church in Washington D.C. -- which the Clintons famously attended while in the White House -- released a little noticed statement offering a sympathetic defense of the totality of Wright's work.

"The Reverend Jeremiah Wright is an outstanding church leader whom I have heard speak a number of times," Snyder wrote. "He has served for decades as a profound voice for justice and inclusion in our society. To evaluate his dynamic ministry on the basis of two or three sound bites does a grave injustice to Dr. Wright, the members of his congregation, and the African-American church which has been the spiritual refuge of a people that has suffered from discrimination, disadvantage, and violence. Dr. Wright, a member of an integrated denomination, has been an agent of racial reconciliation while proclaiming perceptions and truths uncomfortable for some white people to hear. Those of us who are white Americans would do well to listen carefully to Dr. Wright rather than to use a few of his quotes to polarize."

Snyder, it should be noted, was not the pastor at Foundry during the Clinton years. That was the previous minister, J. Philip Wogaman. Moreover, there seems to be confusion as to exactly what church Clinton now attends. Her campaign did not return requests for comment.

However, Foundry was cited on numerous occasions as a steady presence during the first couple's time in the White House. And in January 2001, Bill Clinton gave a farewell speech to the congregation, thanking the church for its work in the city as well as for its "courage" to welcome gay and lesbian Christians.

Snyder, according to the church's website, became senior minister in 2002. "Before his appointment to Foundry, he served as director of communications for the Baltimore-Washington Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church. His writings on theology, Biblical interpretation, and Christian mission have appeared in dozens of publications."

And in a recent New York Times article, even he acknowledged that some in his congregation were aghast at Wright's remarks.

"During staff meetings this week at his church," the Times reported, "Snyder said he noticed the rising awareness among some African-Americans of white Americans, he said, 'who don't understand the history of black people in this country and the role of the black church as a prophetic voice, and that in church you can say things that you couldn't in larger society.'"

I would like to hear more about this church that Hillary attends called ' The Family '

The Family story is really just about the prayer breakfasts in Washington, and the fact that Republicans and Democrats gather together for these non-partisan events. Much ado about nothing. "Skull and Crossbones" lame consipiracy theories Huffing for Obama.

The real story here is why Huffington Post bothers with this "quid pro quo" tabloid stuff. It doesn't elevate the discussion of important issues for Democrats and is very shallow and not really journalism.

Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.
Who are you going to believe, me or your own lying eyes?

When the troll starts trying to distract you, it's because he doesn't want you to know the truth. Check it out:

Sorry, you don't get off that easy. You have not told the whole truth about who attends these breakfasts. You sound credible, but please give more details about who attends and their party affiliations. Easy to say that both Republicans and Democrats attend, but everyone thought Joe Lieberman was a Democrat to.

Why doesn't she answer she belongs to The Family? She said she can choose her pastor, I guess she can, and is not a pretty picture. Research can be done: Mother Jones-Sept. 07
It seems she enjoys the company of staunch Republicans. She sure is acting like one. And we have not seen her documents, yet.

Sam, at the risk of being labeled... well, take your pick... How could Hillary restoke the Wright controversy when it had been still going on, it hadn't died down. Every fricking pundit was still droning on and on about it, every fricking show had at least one segment discussing it ad nausum. It wasn't out so therefore Clinton did not restoke it.

I know it is difficult given the amount of Hate people feel for Hillary but could you at least try to be a tiny bit fair when you do your hatchet jobs?
Do you guys get bonuses per over the tiop fact bending comments?
Seriously.

It has become absurd what you guys are doing.
You are turning real Obama supporters away. I have to wonder if there isn't some kind of right wing contingency here at huffpo that wants Obama to lose.

Who owns HuffPo anyway?
Who are the backers.

Why is Minister Snyders comment not in the mainstream press? Is it not controversial enough?

Isn't is a game of "if I can't have it, he won't either!"

Or: "I'll show my Goldwater Republican Daddy, who never did love me or think I was as good as my two brothers, that I can wreck the Democratic Party. Oh, yes I can!"

Or: She's the Manchurian Candidate... of the Republican Party.

Sam Stein with more great Huffing for Obama. Pastor of Clinton's favorite church is not the same as the pastor who was at the church when the Clinton's were in attendance. Gee, that's great reporting if you write for a tabloid.

The problem with the Obama -Wright scenario is that Senator Obama is being bitterly attacked for what someone else supposedly said. Isn't it a shame that Clinton couldn't find anything specific on Obama, she had to go search for a "he said" line, so Obama's guilty.
Clinton's famous "you choose your pastor" line could be phrased to her, "Well, Hillary, you also choose your SPOUSE, so WHY didn't you leave Bill after all of those various affairs over so many years?"

I agree. The media seems to be shying away from Hillary's "family" that she belongs to. It took some gaul for her to make a comment on Wright and even her own former pastor told her that she should have stayed out of it. She seems to be adopting Rush Limbaugh's view on trying to bloody up Obama. I do however think that Pelosi will endorse soon as well as Edwards. I cannot see this going up to June 3rd with Hillary having virtually no real chance of winning. She is a fighter yes, but there comes a point in time when you have to concede. Her favorability rating is lower than Obama's right now. That's shocking considering everyone thought the Rev. Wright mess would cook Obama. One more point on Rev. Wright, the media has seemed to stop playing the clips. What are they afraid of? Perhaps of being sued by the United Church of Christ for defamation. They clipped this stuff to try and make Wright out to be an angry anti-American, but in reality when you go and view the whole sermon, he was quoting other people. The Republicans and the 527s better make damn sure they think long and hard about that fact before they try and swiftboat Obama in the general.

Who does Hillary Clinton think she is to preach to blacks on how to respond to America's racism? I am very weary of those whites who enjoy all the goodies oppression of blacks has netted for this country, who then turn around and try to tell blacks how to behave--chastises them for daring to resist racial oppression. What hype!

I think that too many people in the USA think that God has an American flag draped around his shoulders and when anyone criticizes the US government and policies God gets his feelings hurt really bad and cries.
I am and American and I am proud to be one. But, the truth is that our government does some really bad things sometimes and when these things are done a pastor is not a traitor to the US to talk about them and condemn in the pulpit. In fact they are obligated to do so.

Was it Upton Sinclair who said that when fascism comes to America it will be holding a Bible and wrapped in the flag?

Well said! In the past seven years I, too, have g--d---'d America--not America itself, but our Congress and the majority of the American public for not rising up in outrage and anger to remove these "leaders" who have callously violated international law by launching a war of aggression, ignoring the loss of Iraqi lives, spurned the Geneva Conventions to sanction torture, renditions, and imprisonment without trial, supplied illegal weapons and aircraft to Israel for the ravaging of Gaza and Lebanon, corrupted our Justice system and our Constitution,---not to mention ignoring the needs of our own people (Remember Katrina!), and trashing our economy for the greed and profit of the top 1%! All of us should be a LOT angrier, and should have removed these "leaders" long ago!

I believe Pastor Wright had every right, every obligation, to call attention to our faults as a nation,---not as an act of disloyalty, but as a call for restoring this great country and our society to our original values, dignity, and honor! I seem to remember that Jesus himself once got VERYangry in the temple at the greed and corruption of the Pharisees, and proceeded to clease the temple of their kind! Sometimes, RIGHTOUS ANGER is good!

Hillary seems like the least spiritual person in the world, and probably only attends church to further her career.

Any intelligent person should know that if someone took the time to go through twenty years of Wrights's sermons to pull brief sound bites iand create a video, that this is another smear attempt against Obama and does NOT truthfully represent the Reverend Wright. All we have to ask is who would benefit from such an effort? Answer: Hillary Clinton who is not electable, leaving John McCain. America, please, stop buying into this nonsense and focus on the fact that the casualties of the Iraq war have rose to 4000 dead. America please stop being distracted by the swiftboating tactics of the GOP and the lies of Hillary Clinton. NOT THIS TIME AMERICA! NOT THIS TIME!

She's hardly doing that.

One comment made by HRC - in response to the question - stating that she would not be associated with his pastor, is merely a difference of choice between her and Obama.

There are a lot more ways of being polarizing than that.

SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE!

Our Founding Fathers had the right idea. We should be keeping religion out of our political arena.

I saw on cable news today that Rev. Wright had cancelled appearances in both Florida and Texas due to security reasons. Is this what we do to good men that have lived their entire life doing the work of Jesus? The media plays a few seconds of sermon out of context and Rev. Wright is branded for life a non-patriot, etc.

Read Rev. Wright's biography and anyone can understand how this man brought Obama to that church and why he stayed. God help us if we are going to continually take down those men and women that improve society. I'm so sick of this stuff!!!!!!
