Six Fallen US Soldiers, In The Words They Sent Home

By the time Specialist Jerry Ryen King decided to write about his experiences in Iraq, the teen-age paratrooper had more to share than most other soldiers.

In two operations to clear the outskirts of the village of Turki in the deadly Diyala Province, Specialist King and the rest of the Fifth Squadron faced days of firefights, grenade attacks and land mines. Well-trained insurgents had burrowed deep into muddy canals, a throwback to the trenches of World War I. As the fighting wore on, B-1 bombers and F-16s were called in to drop a series of powerful bombs.

Once the area was clear of insurgents, the squadron, part of the 82nd Airborne Division, uncovered hidden caches with thousands of weapons.

Two months later, Specialist King, a handsome former honors student and double-sport athlete from Georgia, sat down at his computer. In informal but powerful prose, he began a journal.

A correction on my posts, if they ever appear, is as follows...regarding the Democracy Now broadcasts of the attending vets at the WInter Soldier meeting...

"The first entry was on March 4th"

The first entry on Democracy Now was actually the 14th of March, if you care to listen, or read (transcripts are on-line). I recommend listening, because you can hear the truth in these men and women's voices. This is something you'll NEVER hear or read on any "liberal" media site, or from any "official" sources. The government would certainly like these vets to go away, but since they own and operate the media, and the media is utterly silent in this regard, they have in a sense, made these vets go away. However, courageous sites like Democracy Now provide the unvarnished truth, and therefore, these honorable people have NOT been silenced...you just, as media consumers, have to listen more acutely. The voices are out there, but the fascist media (I use that term carefully, not frivolously) and it's stranglehold on information, is doing everything they can to keep these voices silent. I was stunned when I realized that not one of them had a single article or comment on the Winter Soldier meetings. More evidence of their collusion with the criminal elite at the top of the American food chain.

Part 2

However, the Congress are willing accomplices in all of this, since they have done NOTHING to stop it. I don't know what else can be done. With the Congress totally corrupted and a President for whom law isn't even a speed bump, you have a real problem for the future of this country. They've proven that the US Constitution can be nullified by acts of pure fraud, when cold blooded power brokers band together toward it's destruction. And that is where we are now...a great document that is no longer even being referenced, and an out of control executive branch that knows no limits to it's cold blooded cruelty. I'm at a loss...the Constitution was supposed to protect us from these barbarians, but it has failed.

Any suggestions????

Part 1

No one can express the utter insanity of the conquest of Iraq more than the soldiers who believed they were getting into something honorable. Sadly for them and their families, their service has been dishonored by the people who sent them...and put them in this untenable and insane situation which has no resolution in the rational world.

And nothing can be a greater indictment of the crimes of this administration than the very words of the soldiers themselves, living, and dead. Winter Soldier meetings recently put a huge spotlight on the atrocious nature of this illegal war, and yet, the "liberal" media (which is anything but liberal) didn't touch the story. I've done keyword searches on all the major news outlets, and none have a single entry related to the Winter Soldiers commentary by veterans of this shameful episode in American history.

Look to Democracy Now if you want to hear the real truth. The first entry was on March 4th, and they had audio of the attending vets comments over the next several days. The men and women who have paid the bloody price should be the ones who bring these war criminals to justice. If the Congress would just do their duty, this would stop.

this story really should be front and center on this website. maybe it would help even one other person to see at last the terrible price this country has paid in pursuit of an illegal and immoral war. each of the lives lost so far have left behind a far larger number of broken hearts. those who survive may still have a functioning body for the most part, but their souls are broken.

it is hardly surprising that in the end, all any normal living creature wants to do is live their lives in peace.

requiscat in pace for the dead.

mercy and peace for the souls of the living left behind, for their suffering has only just begun.

there should be an amendment that it's required to broadcast completely uncensored coverage of any war that we wage. no other shows can be broadcast. all bombings, killings, soldiers' comments, blood, bodies... everything, every night, all channels.

As I write this more of our soldiers are dying by the hour, thier death cirtificates altered by the military to make George Bush look good. The fact that nobody in the house or senate cares to even investigate this is sadder still. I I tried to have at least two deaths investigated, re opened, that Bush determined to be by friendly fire or suicide. The ME's who did the autopies said otherwise. The list who refused to help with an investigation reads like a who's who of the house and senate. Dems and republicans are guilty of the cover ups when they fail to act, demand truth and honesty for the soldiers, the families who must deal with a pentagon. One Mo. congressman, William Lacey Clay wasn't so silent about this, has tried as I have to get these cases reopened, investigated, for the families who need that last word. Like Lacey, I have been told eat the cookie little girl and go away. I am not going away until every soldier's death has been revealed. The families deserve it, they deserve it, Bush and Cheney deserve jail time for a federal crime of tampering with a soldier's autopsy, its called collusion, tampering with evidence, and embalming the bodies or cremating them before the truth can be gatherd. Folks, we must demand better for these men and women. If we don't we too collude with those who did the crimes. Don't let it happen. I am not. Lacey isn't.

My god, what a waste of such beautiful young men. What a terrible waste. My heart breaks for them and for their loved ones. Why are we not in the streets?

They gave there lives so that the Bush and Cheney families and the criminals that helped them decieve the nation could profit.

I am sure Bush's Saudi Arabian Royal Cohorts could really care about 4,000 dead Americans as they sip their drinks in their Palaces and Yachts.

What is worse, Bush and cheney getting away with it, or Pelosi allowing it to happen on her watch ?

i find the lack of posts on this blog demoralizing.

These soldiers had their lives taken for no sane purpose and no one is being held accountable for this unspeakable crime.

Every person who believes as I do should make a contribution to Cindy Sheehans's race against pelosi for congress. pelosi is guilty of aiding and abetting this slaughter.

We know that bush and his accomplises have no conscience and could not care less. Hopefully, there is still a shred of deceny in pelosi that will torment her for the rest of her days.

Amazing. As crude as these guys are sometimes, they truly are doing their best to find some good in an extremely bad situation. The question of "why are we here?" is a rare one for these guys, because they know why. They're Army, they have a job to do and they do it. There's no time to question why they are in Iraq, because they've got to keep sharp to avoid being killed or to prevent their buddies from being killed. All they really want is to get home; they know they're in hell, but what do they do? Drop their weapon and refuse to fight? Bang! He's dead.
It's the same with the country's reason for being there. At this point, does it really matter anymore? We're there, we've created one hell of a mess, and before we leave we have to make sure that the mess gets as cleaned up as it can be. I certainly don't advocate a 100 year war, or even a 10 year war, but there's no way it's going to end in seven months when the next president is elected.

Every time I see the faces of the fallen heros, I get so enraged at Bush / Cheney, that I cannot see straight. I agree with Rev. Wright on this one, God should damn America for illegally and fraudulently forging a war, and allowing our young people to sacrifice themselves for a farce. If our chickens were coming home to roost on 9/11, what will happen when our soldiers realize that the sacrifice was for the vanity and the wealth of the Bush aristocracy?

Thanks, Huffpo, for calling them soldiers and not the impersonal dehumanizing "troops," but please lose the John Wayne-ish "fallen" when you mean dead. These people are owed the dignity of having their lives and deaths fully acknowledged.

It's good to see MSM chronicle the lives of soldiers. The Glove and Mail; check HuffPo links; has run an interactive map and journal that details were each and every Canadian soldier fell in combat as well as a short bio and links to news stories about the soldier. The section is called The Fallen. Here is a link.

Want the troops home? Require females 18-yr-olds to register for the draft as their male counterparts are already required to do. Don't HAVE a draft, just make both genders register, which is only fair anyway. Once the women must register, the troops will be on their way home pronto.

This is absolutely heart-breaking, to see these young lives unnecessarily lost.

And I am sickened by the reality that the shock of their death is just the beginning of the pain and suffering for these families, for the mothers, fathers, and children of our lost soldiers.

I am doing what I can.

Please, do everything you can also, to bring these soldiers home.

We would be far more secure with a strong military defense at home and competent diplomacy abroad, capable of striking abroad when absolutely necessary, but this attempted occupation of Iraq is insane and doomed to failure. Unless a Nation has both the willingness and ability to commit genocide and colonize on a massive scale, all occupations end in failure. In the meantime, the native people of the occupied land have little else to do but hammer away at the hated occupier until the costs of occupation in lives and treasure become untenable.

We will be leaving Iraq. But how many more young lives are we willing to lose in the meantime?

We owe those that have volunteered to serve our Nation far better than this.
