Wright

The man who inspired Reverend Jeremiah Wright's controversial "America's chicken coming home to roost" remarks says that, like Sen. Hillary Clinton, he would have left the church had he been sitting in on that particular sermon.

Ambassador Ed Peck, a retired 32-year diplomat, served as the intellectual basis of a segment of Wright's post 9/11 sermon. (Wright said he saw Peck discussing the backlash of U.S. foreign policy during a Fox News segment.)

But while Peck acknowledges that he still believes that U.S. foreign policy was in many ways responsible for triggering the terrorist attacks, he also insists that he would not have tolerated the incendiary language that Sen. Barack Obama's former pastor employed.

"I probably would have walked out, because you cannot, to me, paint my nation as nothing more than a needless mindless monster. I would say, yes, we have made mistakes. Other nations make mistakes as well, and they haven't been as involved in Middle East," said Peck. "But Reverend Wright was drastically overstating the case... I would not sign on to that procedure and I would never have returned to a place where a man spouted such language, because my perception is that that is not the way to do it. My perception is that you do it my way, with thoughtful efforts to get people to understand what you are talking about."

Peck said that he had not had the chance to view Wright's clips in their entirety. He just returned from a long break only to find out that he had become something of a mini-political celebrity due to his connection to the sermon. He also said that it was unfair to truly judge Wright strictly on these five-second clips, that there were "seeds of truth" to what the Reverend had to say, "but he blasted them out of proportion."

Peck, who has offered controversial criticism of Israeli policy in the West Bank but also warned early against the Iraq Wwar, pointed to several U.S. foreign policy anecdotes that he believed validated his and Wright's premise. Those included testimony, overseen by former Sen. Lee Hamilton, in which intelligence agents testified that the Israel-Palestine conflict had been a main contributor to the proliferation of radical Islamic terrorism. In addition, there was a 60 Minutes interview of Madeline Albright, in which the former Secretary of State said U.S. sanctions on Iraq were worth it despite the deaths of hundreds of thousands of children.

"This is not in any way intended to be a denigration of Dr. Albright, she had a job in explaining and defending American policies," said Peck. "[But] it was probably the coldest thing you will ever see on television. It was run once on 60 Minutes, but it was shown a thousand times overseas."

In his now notorious sermon, Wright highlighted issues analogous to these, as evidence that America had helped aggravate the very terrorists who were striking out. "We bombed Hiroshima, we bombed Nagasaki and we nuked far more than the thousands in New York and the Pentagon and we never batted an eye," he said.

What has not been shown in those clips is that Wright prefaced and concluded that remark by saying he was paraphrasing Peck.

"A white ambassador said that y'all, not a black militant," he said, "not a reverend who preaches about racism, an ambassador whose eyes are wide open and is trying to get us to wake up and move away from this dangerous precipice..."

Peck said that while he never utter the phrase "chickens coming home to roost," he was aware that Wright had taken his words and ideas for his own sermon. Nevertheless, he didn't think the right message had been preached.

"I would not endorse it and I wouldn't sign on to it," he said. "There were seeds of truth to what he said but he blasted them out of proportion from the clips I have seen."

Dear God in Heaven -- thank you, Sam!!! I've been wearing my fingers to the nub posting this on every blog I possibly can find -- conservative, liberal and in between. Seems only a few people are willing to research the Ed Peck involvement, and the mainstream media would rather cover the drying of a celebutante's nail polish than sooner let the Internet-non-savvy public find this out. Thank you, from the bottom of my tired gut.

The only White people who would be offended by Obama's comments ARE THE PROBLEM, and that is a problem for the rest of us White Folks who AREN'T BIGOTS, and are fortunate, and also willing, to see past the bigotry of you and others to try to find solutions that will carry this country forward towards a future worth living. It's too bad for you that you carry that animosity and ignorance, and are among that group who only sees your little world, and can't see the forest for the trees. A team is only as good as it's weakest player, and that used to be the promise of America, and Religion, that WE ARE ALL ON THE SAME TEAM.

Do you people not know what the hell is going on? What Peck said is OK because he's an old white former ambassador who didn't RAISE his voice and Wright is an old black man who raised his voice with the SAME exact message. Helllllllooooooo? I keep saying the MSM doesn't care about the truth, because they would have to admit that they dived into this controversy without and "where's the beef?" Pure and simple.

By the way Sam keep the story in perspective. Peck didn't inspire Wright's sermon. Peck's comments and Wright's expansion on them were a sidelight of the sermon. The sermon, as I listened to it, was built around Psalm 137. Wright discussed, at a pertinant time, self reflection as we set about to respond to the 9/11 attack. It particularly addressed the devastating effect that war can have on inniocents. Sounds different when it's put that way doesn't it? Encourage your readers to take some time to listen to it and not just the sound bites. How about a little less drama and a little more substance?

Note to Ambassador Peck and the news media: WATCH THE WHOLE SERMON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You might all have a different opinion of Rev. Wright.

Hey Sam, how much more do you want to stir the pot on this issue? This post is just filling space as far as I'm concerned. How about you let it go and write about the relevant issues, like the economy, the war in Iraq, etc. etc. It would certainly be a better use of our time to read about that.

Neither are the people in the ultra right wing secretive Sunday "meetings" Hillary attended while in the White House.

The whole church should have walked out unless they agreed with Pastor Wright's statements. I and many others cannot accept the fact that Senator Obama did not walk out in protest. How can anybody who loves and is proud of this country even think of voting for Senator Obama now? I don't care what he said in his speech which I listened to in its entirety. He must put his own house in order before he thinks about living in the White House. Why did he not initiate those conversations in his church? Did he only think about these conversations because he wants to be elected?

You should give up your namesake for saying something like that. How about you go to Youtube and check out the sermons in their full context objectively? That's the only way you can truly learn.

Let's see what he says when he's seen the entire sermon and hears the words in context. I think he will be less critical, if he considers who Write was speaking to, as well as what his sermon was meant to preach:

"Thou shall have no other God before me." was the real message of the sermon. If Peck argues with that, he doesn't understand Christianity.

Peck, "... would have left the church had I been sitting in on that particular sermon and put a tap on his phone, like we did Martin Luther King."

It sounds as if he is afraid of becoming a pariah in the media as Reverend Wright has become. I still cannot believe that the media has not discussed Wright's sermons in their entirety. That is beyond irresponsible. If there was malpractice in journalism, the MSM would be guilty of it. When I am flipping through the channels during commercial breaks, I go by Fox just to see if the Wright comments are being played or if they are discussing Wright--again. Last night, Bill O'Reilly and a former CBS news reporter was complaining about Roland Martin from CNN, whom O'Reilly described as a "race" guy and an apologist, because he was trying to discuss Wright's sermons in context. They pointed out that Martin is black, implying that he obviously had an agenda and couldn't be trusted. They said such crazy things that I couldn't believe it.

Please explain how statements Peck made on OCTOBER 11, 2001 could have been the basis of Rev. Wright's sermon on SEPTEMBER 16, 2001. I asked Roland Martin the same thing, since he has also tried to use this same arguement, but he can't explain it. Can you?

That's a good question. Of course you'd like to leave it hanging out there rather than have it answered because you want all-Wright/all the time.

However, I have one for you. Why did Rev. Wright cite a U.S. diplomat in his sermon if he hadn't heard this somewhere else?

The dates are what Sam Stein and Roland Martin have both used in their posts. I have read the complete transcripts of Rev. Wright's sermons, but I don't know if I can accept they were based on Edward Peck's comments.

I have done some research on Edward Peck. He had signed on to the 9/11 Truth Group which felt the 9/11 Commission did not do a complete investigation and he was strongly against the U.S. invasion of Iraq, based on his experience as ambassador to Iraq.

If we are asked to accept these statements made by Sam Stein and Roland Martin as fact, are we not allowed to ask them to verify the dates they are basing their information on?

Have you ever watched the unedited, unparsed serom?? I'll bet you haven't even though for over a week I have posted the links to it right here at HuffPo. It is as clear as day that Rev. Wright quotes Amb. Peck in his sermon.

If you would like to educate yourself and see the sermons:

These videos are in total about 20 minutes long. But please watch them and then you will see that there have been some egregious liberties taken with what has been broadcast.

Well, deduction would say either Peck made the comments more than once, or the Rev. is lying...

So your theory is that Rev. Wright lied about Ambassador Peck making these comments during his September 16, 2001 sermon? And then Ambassador Peck heard that this Reverend in Chicago had told this ridiculous lie, and he quickly went on Fox in October and made the statement attributed to him in order that the Reverend's assertions could have some basis in the truth? Or are you suggesting that it's mere coincidence - that Rev. Wright lied about Ambassador Peck speaking these words and by SHEER COINCIDENCE Ambassador Peck did so a month later?

You're right. Peck stole those exact talking points and then spoke out to the News Media about them.
And took the credit! Jeez. Your dates are wrong.

hmm, didn't see the whole sermon... strange you didn't show it to him prior to the interview. for that matter have you seen the entire sermon? It is available on you tube in its entirety. But hey don't let that stop you from continuing the bashing of Rev. Wright and distorting his words and his message.

Everyone should watch the 60 minute interview with Albright, who is Clinton's foreign policy advisor, and Leslie Stahl pertaining to the Iraq sanctions. Very sad!!!!
