Yes, you have heard this speech before.

On Wednesday, Sen. John McCain delivered a "major" foreign policy address, in which, as part of his defense for a continued presence of U.S troops in Iraq, he positioned himself as a "realistic idealist," someone who is acutely aware of the cost of war.

"The lives of a nation's finest patriots are sacrificed. Innocent people suffer and die," McCain told the Los Angeles World Affairs Council. "Commerce is disrupted; economies are damaged; strategic interests shielded by years of patient statecraft are endangered as the exigencies of war and diplomacy conflict. Not the valor with which it is fought nor the nobility of the cause it serves, can glorify war. Whatever gains are secured, it is loss the veteran remembers most keenly. Only a fool or a fraud sentimentalizes the merciless reality of war. However heady the appeal of a call to arms, however just the cause, we should still shed a tear for all that is lost when war claims its wages from us... we cannot wish the war to be a better place."

It is a repackaged graph.

Six-and-a-half years earlier, McCain used the almost the exact same language to drum up popular support for military action in the greater war on terror.

"War is a miserable business," the Arizona Senator wrote in a Wall Street Journal oped in October 2001. "The lives of a nation's finest patriots are sacrificed. Innocent people suffer and die. Commerce is disrupted, economies are damaged. Strategic interests shielded by years of patient statecraft are endangered as the exigencies of war and diplomacy conflict. However heady the appeal of a call to arms, however just the cause, we should still shed a tear for all that will be lost when war claims its wages from us. Shed a tear, and then get on with the business of killing our enemies as quickly as we can, and as ruthlessly as we must. There is no avoiding the war we are in today, any more than we could have avoided world war after our fleet was bombed at Pearl Harbor.... War is a miserable business. Let's get on with it."

To be sure, politicians are free and often eager to use old lines, especially those they think are persuasive. What these two, nearly identical, remarks suggest is that McCain's view of combat -- and, perhaps more importantly, its human costs -- has not really changed throughout the course of war. That is, despite five years of military operations in Iraq and more than 4,000 troop deaths, he still sees the "lives lost" and the "merciless realities" as necessary sacrifices to make.

It is a position that undoubtedly remains popular with a great number of primarily conservative voters. But it is also a sign of an unbending, almost stubborn, nature on the war that McCain's critics will certainly hold over his head during the presidential campaign.

Ooooooo, but he's SUCH a patriot!!! Like nobody else is???

We know that Bushie is about a million light years removed from what's going on with America and Americans - can you imagine what it would be like with St. John at the helm?

His 100-year war would be only the beginning......the beginning of the end!

I think you are about 5 years too late with your comment. The USA has become the richest 3rd world nation on earth. I think we are way past the beginning of the end.

100 year war? Please don't make stuff up. Here is what non-partisan Factcheck.org has to say:

" Far from advocating "endless war," he said the presence of U.S. troops in Iraq would be "fine with me" provided that they're not being killed or wounded. Here's the full quote:

McCain, Jan. 3: Make it a hundred. ... We’ve been in Japan for 60 years. We’ve been in South Korea for 50 years or so. That would be fine with me, as long as American, as long as Americans are not being injured or harmed or wounded or killed. It’s fine with me and I hope it would be fine with you if we maintained a presence in a very volatile part of the world where al Qaeda is training, recruiting and equipping and motivating people every single day.

It should be noted that both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, despite their frequent talk of withdrawing from Iraq, have said repeatedly that they would maintain at least some troops in a combat role in Iraq for some time, possibly their entire term of office.

...But it's a RANK FALSEHOOD for the DNC to accuse McCain of wanting to wage "endless war" based on his support for a presence in Iraq something like the U.S. role in South Korea."

"...There is no avoiding the war we are in today, any more than we could have avoided world war after our fleet was bombed at Pearl Harbor..."

After the Japanese military attacked U.S. military bases, we declared war on Japan.

After Saudi murderers attacked civilians on 9/11, McCain urged us to go to war against ... ?

Reminds me of Terry Jones's famous "I'm Losing Patience with my Neighbours, Mr. Bush":

Even after the effing PENTAGON released their findings that Saddam had no weapons, was not hiding them elsewhere, had nothing to do with 9/11, and that Iran is not doing these things either, McCain dares to show his bare ass by dragging out his 2001 pro-war speech?

No one wants the war, Johnny Boy! Haven't you heard?

I just wish the main stream media had the backbone to take note of facts like these too. But it seems they are instead enjoying their cozy relationship with the McCain campaign and busy showing Obama's pastor clips billion times a day!

I wish you were correct, but, I do not think so. There are still many, oh so many, ignorant voters who will buy the MSM bullshit hook, line and SINKER.

"There is no avoiding the war we are in today, any more than we could have avoided world war after our fleet was bombed at Pearl Harbor"

Nice try John. Japan attacked us at Pearl Harbor. Iraq did not attack us. If anything, invading Iraq was a distraction from fighting the people that actually attacked us.

I disagree. 9/11 was a distraction so you didn't notice that Wall Street was already busy raping the economy, that the PNAC by way of the Office of Special Plans was well on its way to launching endless war, and that Israelis had already infiltrated our telecom and defense systems.

Israel has been intercepting our telecommunications for over 10 years. Read the Gold of Exodus, an entertaining read until you read the parts about the CIA and Israel. Then it becomes quite sickening quickly.

What do you expect from a yester-year politician? He has nothing new to offer.

Ah, give the guy a break, he's 71, and probably can't remember that he said it. Heck, he probably can't remember what he said yesterday. Let alone the difference between suni's and shiites.

well even if portions of his speeches are recycled, at least mccain is recycling his own speeches. compare that to barack obama lifting lines from deval patrick, spike lee movies, and children's cartoons ("Can we fix it? Yes we can!")

That's OK. Bush has been lifting lines from Churchill for years now.

What makes you think McCain actually wrote those words to begin with? He's obviously a man of limited verbal skills and he must depend on his speech writers to put together coherent sentences. I don't know what skill McCain has that is _not_ limited, except maybe how to ditch a sick wife and marry money.

Yeah, that's right. He (Obama) can't use material by his own campaign folks. And I think your line about "children's cartoons" speaks more about your comprehension level than his words. Perhaps he could just make the whole thing up like Hillary. Maybe a tale about navigating through Harvard Yard through a hail of sniper bullets and mortar fire, while on fire and then heroically climbing into his chopper and cutting down the bad guys - saving Chelsea Clinton, Donny Osmond and Carmen Miranda - all in one fell swoop.

Surely to God we aren't headed for president McCain. If he is elected America is over. I can't believe that I voted for this clown in the 2000 primaries.

Just keep saying things like this over and over again John. Even Diebold will not even be able to prevent us from giving us our first African-American president.

no, but clinton, inc. surely will. anyone who thinks she will stop at anything to claim the oval office is kidding themselves. the best thing for obama and his family is if his candidacy continues to implode. that way he'll be around this time next year to vacation in the virgin islands.

Maybe it is just age related rigidity, he sure has learned nothing since 2001.

The media is not reporting on McCain anyway. The MSM is all about Hillary 24/7 analyzing whatever she says or thinks. McCain has no record as far as the media is concerned.

It was only about a week ago that Quixote bush proclaimed Afghanistan as romantic and the soldiers were lucky to be involved(adding that he wished he were younger so that he could join up). Then chinny goes on tv and says george Quixote is the one paying the price. I think that I, also, would want to distance myself from them. However, senator, you're already marrried up to these sociopaths. Too bad, I used to respect you. Now, you're just an old guy who should be quartered in some old sailor's home. Oh-you helped close them. Get more delusional and there will always be a job for you on fux news.

McCain lied when he denied ever saying he didn't know much about economics. McCain lied when he claimed that he never said that the Iraq war would be easy. McCain lied when he claimed he corrected his imbecilic assertion that Shia Iran was training Sunni al Qaeda terrorists by himself, since it's clear on the video tape that Lieberman had to corrrect him. The proof of these lies was caught on video.

And then there's McCain's "preacher problem." He's got two nutjobs who endorsed him because they expect -- correctly -- that he will start the apocalyptic war they want so that Jesus will come down and rapture all good little conservatives to Heaven. McCain is likely to give them the apocalypse they want, but they and a lot of their fellow nutjobs will probably get "raptured" someplace other than Heaven.

rwe: you still believe all the BushCo/McCain lies? you're persistent, so you are either making money of the wars, paid to write this drivel, or really easily duped.

Your favorite war crime is predictably sadly disintegrating.

The Iraq Invasion and occupation War Crime has always been about profiteering, the Rapture, the Christian Crusades, empire and fascist totalitarian control of the USA.
