22-Year-Old Efraim Diveroli, Awarded $300 Million Defense Contract To Arm Afghan Forces, Supplied Them With Aging, Defective Arms

New York Times:

Since 2006, when the insurgency in Afghanistan sharply intensified, the Afghan government has been dependent on American logistics and military support in the war against Al Qaeda and the Taliban.

But to arm the Afghan forces that it hopes will lead this fight, the American military has relied since early last year on a fledgling company led by a 22-year-old man whose vice president was a licensed masseur.

With the award last January of a federal contract worth as much as nearly $300 million, the company, AEY Inc., which operates out of an unmarked office in Miami Beach, became the main supplier of munitions to Afghanistan's army and police forces.

Since then, the company has provided ammunition that is more than 40 years old and in decomposing packaging, according to an examination of the munitions by The New York Times and interviews with American and Afghan officials. Much of the ammunition comes from the aging stockpiles of the old Communist bloc, including stockpiles that the State Department and NATO have determined to be unreliable and obsolete, and have spent millions of dollars to have destroyed.

In purchasing munitions, the contractor has also worked with middlemen and a shell company on a federal list of entities suspected of illegal arms trafficking.

Moreover, tens of millions of the rifle and machine-gun cartridges were manufactured in China, making their procurement a possible violation of American law. The company's president, Efraim E. Diveroli, was also secretly recorded in a conversation that suggested corruption in his company's purchase of more than 100 million aging rounds in Albania, according to audio files of the conversation.

I hope the reporters on this story get a cut from the movie version. (Schlesinger and Pakula are both gone -- director anyone? Sydney Pollack?)

This is the reason we need to rein in this bunch of idiots we have in Washington, with George Bush being lead idiot with Cheney right behind, If you will look a Bush back ground you will find in every job he has had he has screw it up. Governor of Texas, Texas Rangers, The oil company that he nearly got him nailed on insider trading till Dad the then VP called the Feds off. Daddy money does not make you competent

This guy is a cutout for a middleman linked to the top, no doubt. An old Lassiter (Clinton buddy) trick, take a truck driver on a boat and plane cruise, have them open a trading account, then push illegal multi-million dollar trades through the account, leave the patsie to take the hit. (true story). In this cas the guy is getting paid off, he should duck and run for cover quick. The Feds should look for the real man behind the curtain and it won't be a suprise, it will be State or Defense buddies for sure. At least think of the crimes against the Afghani people, who have had their country devastated, and now we trick them again with defective illegal sub par ammunition. OMG

This is one example why, under MY administrationer, the 'defense' budget might amount to about $32.50, that's 'thirty-two dollars, and fifty cents', for a couple of years...what a sad, sad joke.

As a 26 year old business owner I would like to know how I get contracts like this. (I'm in the IT business) It blows my mind how I can struggle to sell products and services for reasonable prices and other people can walk in and get this type of contract and not even deliver! The greed of these companies is amazing. When you are making far more for a given item than you could ever sell it for anywhere else the least you can do is deliver the item!

Maybe that is my problem, I'm trying to build my business in honest way with concern for my customers satisfaction.

this is not one guy you should want to emulate -- a merchant of death and a crooked one at that -- definitely not one that would fit under the "nice jewish boy" category neither he nor his accomplices -- take pride in doing things that bring benefit to humanity not those that work to destroy it

peace

"I'm trying to build my business in honest way with concern for my customers satisfaction."

That's not your problem, that's your ethics. Don't be jealous of those make obscenely inconsistent rewards for unscrupulous activity. But, definitely be offended by it.

That's right. Dump on the poor kid. He's only trying to get his start in the defense contracting business.

Not everyone can sell $1000 hammers.

Why not go after the heads of Boeing, Northrup, etc. instead. They have built us a military that can't seem to win in Iraq - a country with no army, little working infrastructure and no credible leadership.

Yeah, that's a good honest living. Making nothing, helping no one but yourself, and helping keep the population down through the misery and pain of others. What a philanthropist.
