22-Year-Old Efraim Diveroli, Awarded $300 Million Defense Contract To Arm Afghan Forces, Supplied Them With Aging, Defective Arms

New York Times:

Since 2006, when the insurgency in Afghanistan sharply intensified, the Afghan government has been dependent on American logistics and military support in the war against Al Qaeda and the Taliban.

But to arm the Afghan forces that it hopes will lead this fight, the American military has relied since early last year on a fledgling company led by a 22-year-old man whose vice president was a licensed masseur.

With the award last January of a federal contract worth as much as nearly $300 million, the company, AEY Inc., which operates out of an unmarked office in Miami Beach, became the main supplier of munitions to Afghanistan's army and police forces.

Since then, the company has provided ammunition that is more than 40 years old and in decomposing packaging, according to an examination of the munitions by The New York Times and interviews with American and Afghan officials. Much of the ammunition comes from the aging stockpiles of the old Communist bloc, including stockpiles that the State Department and NATO have determined to be unreliable and obsolete, and have spent millions of dollars to have destroyed.

In purchasing munitions, the contractor has also worked with middlemen and a shell company on a federal list of entities suspected of illegal arms trafficking.

Moreover, tens of millions of the rifle and machine-gun cartridges were manufactured in China, making their procurement a possible violation of American law. The company's president, Efraim E. Diveroli, was also secretly recorded in a conversation that suggested corruption in his company's purchase of more than 100 million aging rounds in Albania, according to audio files of the conversation.

YOUR ReThugLieCon Mafia in action... the destinations of paranoia, gangsterism and the reich-wingnut Weltanshauung are not pretty!

With parasitic American-taxpayer-feeding corpo-thugs like the turds discussed in this story, it's a good thing that money in the USA is simply printed, and printed, and printed... and that the cultivation and exercise of violent solutions to problems of one's own making is the norm.

What a perfectly forked-up country!

What oversight is there for contractors? Any? Or is it merely the mafioso "I know a guy who knows a guy" way of doing business that has become de rigeur for the Bush/Saud cartel?

Democracy. Now. Oversight. Now. Arrest-imprison the war profiteers and scam artists.

22, he'll be someone's lipstick b**ch pretty soon.

Exceptional reporting on this story.
Maybe Ollie North could take over, then AEY could ship the arms to Iran so that they would stop training, uh, Shiite militants, and release, uh, any hostages they may have, just in time for the 2008 election...

The first reaction to this story, isn't it a little early for April 1 jokes. Next reaction, this is how we are assisting the authorities towards democracy and maintaining security for those activities. Lastly, this is a drop in the bucket, related to the monetary corruption that is going on post 9 11.

Hey Carl Levin!
What are you going to do about this?
Hey Henry Waxman! Get this 22 year old creep to swear in
for questions by your committee.
Hey 60 Minutes! What are you waiting for?
Hey Jon Stewart! I'm sure your investigative reporters can
shed some light on this for your audience.

Wow. This is how we are fighting the war on terror and all I hear about when I turn on the TV is Rev. Wright and lies about visits to Bosnia. When is someone going to invent an alternate reality machine where I can leave this world and go to one that makes more sense?

Same as it has been doing for quite some time...squandering taxpayer money. I'm wondering if anyone has taken a look at the assets and spending habits of the people in our government that awarded this contract.
