In a new interview with National Journal, Sen. Chris Dodd says that continuing the Democratic primary race for the next several months would be "devastating," and that over the next several weeks, Democratic leaders "have to step up to the plate and say enough is enough."

A few excerpts from his interview:

Look, we've got five more months to go before the Democratic convention at the end of August and, candidly, we cannot go five more months with the kind of daily sniping that's going on and have a candidate emerge in that convention. My hope is that it will be Barack Obama, but if it's Hillary Clinton, she too will suffer, in my view, from this kind of a campaign that I think is undermining the credibility and the quality of the two candidates that we have. We have two very strong candidates. So I'm worried about this going on endlessly and to a large extent, Linda, the media, a lot of these cable networks, are enjoying this. It's what is keeping them alive financially. The fact that this thing is going on forever, back and forth every day, all night -- I don't think it's really helping the candidates or the political institutions.

Asked about the solution to ending the race:

Dodd: Well, the solution is -- look, we've got a contest coming up in Pennsylvania and one in North Carolina and Indiana very quickly afterwards. In my view, the outcome of those three races will determine -- I think the race has been determined, anyway, at this point. I think it's very difficult to imagine how anyone can believe that Barack Obama can't be the nominee of the party. I think that's a foregone conclusion, in my view, at this juncture given where things are.

But certainly over the next couple of weeks, as we get into April, it seems to me then, that the national leadership of this party has to stand up and reach a conclusion. And in the absence of doing that -- and that's not easy, and I realize it's painful. But the alternatives, allowing this sort of to fester over the months of June, and July and August, I think, are irresponsible. I think you have to make a decision, and hopefully the candidates will respect it and people will rally behind a nominee that, I think, emerges from these contests over the next month. That's my suggestion. That's what I would do.

...I mean, if a person wants to stay in the race, stay in the race. But if you have enough people rallying behind what appears to be the likely choice, and I believe the choice is Barack Obama, and I believe that will be the choice over the next several weeks, then I think you have to step up to the plate and say enough is enough. We want this to be over with. We want to get behind this candidate, and we want people to pull together to win that election in November, to build those majorities in the House and the Senate if we can, and then start doing the work on health care and Iraq and all these other issues that demand our attention.

Hillary should take a page from the Mike Huckabee handbook on sportsmanship. There's a larger gap between Huckabee and McCain then there is between Obama and Clinton, but Huckabee never tore down John McCain the way Clinton is doing to Obama. It's fine for her to stay in a race that she can't win. It's her right. It's a free country. She should, however, cease and desist with mutilating her party's odds of winning in November.

Listening to Barak supporters insist we not go through the process makes me lie them less. Hillary is doing our party a favor by running and if that scares Barak supporters, maybe they should convince their candidate to stand down! Get serious people and quit being taken in by Republican propoganda.

Right on. The race is over for Chris Dodd unless you count his race with Bill Richardson for the biggest brown noser ever in the fight for VP. This race isn't over until all the skeletons in Barry Obama's closet are exposed. The Tony Rezko thing won't go away and there are a lot of questions to be asked if the press will stop swooning over Barry and get their collective heads out. I don't believe Barry's relationship with his pastor can be ignored. A crazy uncle? No matter what Barry says, he can't distance himself. Racism goes both ways, and the pastor's comments sounded racist to me. (I am white, liberal and tolerant) I want more details on how Barry governed in Chicago. When all the stones are turned over, (a clearer vetting of Obama), then we can decide on the candidate. Barry is a great orator but deeds matter and he has done nothing but speeches. All of his votes since coming to the senate have mirrored Clinton's. This race is far from over.

They want her to quit now because Sen. Obama is going to get his clock cleaned in PA. and after and then they know he is not electable anymore.

Spot on. Are we going to nominate a candidate who fails to win the big states, who is prepared to give up Florida and Michigan?

The petition asking Clinton to withdraw is gaining momentum... read it and, if you agree, sign it at http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/clintonwithdrawnow/
"Dear Senator Hilary Clinton,
This petition respectfully and humbly requests that you make what may be the hardest decision of your public life and withdraw from the 2008 presidential contest. Your service to this country, passion about the issues and qualifications to be President are recognized by any fair-minded observer. In addition to your many accomplishments and service in the US Senate, you have come closer to the US presidency than any woman in history while bringing many important issues and positions to the national discourse. We now call on you to act as a statesman and perform a noble service to the nation by suspending your campaign. As is often the case in history, and had been the case in your life before, you are being asked to serve in a way that is so cruelly different from the way you imagined.
Your chances of winning the Democratic nomination at this point are perhaps 20% or less. ..."

Obama lost me with his arrogance about his electability around the same time he told Clinton , "you are likable enough, Hillary". He claimed that Hillary supporters will vote for him and not vice versa. Well, this Hillary supporter will stay home (for the first time in any election), if we have McCain and Obama running. And, based on the latest polls, Senator Obama, 30% of Clinton supporters will vote for McCain.

I'm with you. I don't think my vote will count when this is being decided by party elite.

Think any of this is based on the fact that she is a woman? I think the "good ol' boys" decided that if it can't be a pasty old white guy as their candidate, it should be someone they can share the bathroom with. As I see things progress, I see a lot of people jumping on the band wagon because he is one of Oprah's "Favorite Things".

If they (Dean and his crazy Move-on and MSNBC buddies) get Obama elected, we should urge Hillary to run as an Independent. How about (I) Clinton/Powell 08'?

Inflated ego is the assumption that you should win the nomination, EVEN IF you're behind in votes, and pledged delegates. Clinton supporters think she should win, because she's a Clinon and that's all that matters.

But McCain, who Mr. Clinton said is a "moderate", "has given about all you can give for this country without dyin' for it."

He said McCain was on the right side of issues like being against torture of enemy combatants and global warming, which "just about crosses the bridge for them (Republicans)."

The praise from Clinton comes as McCain, with the Republican nomination locked up and trying to rebrand his Maverick label, has tried to distance himself from President Bush, most notably on foreign policy. In a speech this week McCain talked about the need for more diplomacy.

http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalradar/2008/03/clinton-praises.html

Please explain to me what the Clintons are up to and don't say to win the nomination because they know this is not going to happen. Why is he back to praising John McCain.

1. What is the Clinton plan.

2. What is the Clinton backup plan.

Agree with fullkelly. The Dems have already disenfranchised Mi and Fla. So now they want to shut down the process so the other primary voters left will lose their rights, too? This is a historic election and whomever you're for, it is a big deal for everyone to cast that vote. Let the process run. Let the voters who are left be heard.

This is what Hillary said about the pledged delegates to reporters in Philadelphia "And also remember that pledged delegates in most states are not pledged." http://www.attytood.com/2008/03/clinton_pledged_delegates_are_1.html1.html" -- Philadelphia Daily News

Hillary's sense of entitlement to the nomination supersedes the party interests.

It's like Dean says, these so-called "elders" have no place asking them to "stop the game", nor should they. We should see how much Barack can take if he is to be the democratic candidate. We know Hillary can take anything thrown at her and we know what's she's about. She's been through the wringer and I'm seeing she is drip/dry. Besides his questionable connections, he's not sure how to react publicly as the media continues to expel these skeletons in his closet and the true nature of his staffers. It will all come out in the wash as they keep dukin' it out. Either Hillary or McCain is president and not the newbe who demands on the job training. But what do i know, i'm just the typical white guy. Oh wait, im gay. Wonder what he says about that in that church.

Yeah, we certainly do know what she's "about". All about nothing...except entitlement, a sense of privilege, and a desire to extort the DNC via self-interested "donors" (read: extortionists). Oh, and if you are seeing Hillary as "drip/dry", I would suggest you immediately seek emergency mental health treatment. Sorry, but people who endorse people who evade imaginary sniper fire are pretty much suspect in my book, and i question their grasp on reality.
"Questionable connections", huh? You mean like Antoin Rezko, the guy I saw standing BETWEEN BILL AND HILLARY IN AN OFFICIAL WHITEHOUSE PHOTO? Or Reverend Wright, who BILL CLINTON INVITED TO THE WHITEHOUSE TO PRETEND TO BEG FOR SPIRITUAL FORGIVENESS AFTER HE DISGRACED THE COUNTRY AND WAS PRE-IMPEACHED? Or like....PETER F. PAUL? Doesn't get much more "questionable" than that, now does it?
Pop quiz, bucagogo...what President doesn't demand "on the job training"? Because if there's like, a course I can take to be President, maybe i'll run. Can I get financial aid for that? Oh wait, Bill Clinton all but destroyed my GI BILL....I forgot. And I wonder what YOUR priest/Rabbi/Swami or whomever will say when he finds out you are gay?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:19 PM on 03/28/2008

I remind you that Obama went out of his way to make a very unpopular statement while campaigning in Texas in support of Gay rights, and as I recall it pointed specifically at religious attitudes and treatment of gays by so-called "Christians".

Found a quote from a Ben Smith piece on Politico:

"An interesting moment came when he was asked a question about LGBT rights and delivered an answer that seemed to suit the questioner, listing the various attributes — race, gender, etc. — that shouldn't trigger discrimination, to successive cheers. When he came to saying that gays and lesbians deserve equality, though, the crowd fell silent.

So he took a different tack:

'Now I’m a Christian, and I praise Jesus every Sunday,' he said, to a sudden wave of noisy applause and cheers.

'I hear people saying things that I don’t think are very Christian with respect to people who are gay and lesbian,' he said, and the crowd seemed to come along with him this time."

1.Why Are Clinton's Negatives Higher Than Her Positives ?

...fiscal year 2000 amounted to at least $230 billion, making it the largest in U.S. history and topping last year's record surplus of $122.7 billion. (A vote for Hillary is a vote for Bill).

2.It Always Has Been Higher Than Her Positives, She Has Been Outed As Being A Liar.

122.7 billion surplus... Hello!!!

3.She Only Raises Half The Funds Obama Has.

Obama is a great guy (1 point for you)

4.Texas Was Won By Obama, Since He Got The Most Delegates.

Texas gave us Bush junior. (no points for you there)

5.She Will Always Be Behind Him In Delegates No Matter What.

(2 points for you)

7. Obama Approval Ratings With Independents Is Higher

That could still change.

8. Obama Has Brought In More New Voters

Ok... one more point for you.

9. She Is Loosing Her Base With Women Since She Was Caught Lying

Sounds like wishful thinking... do you actually listen to the polls special interests put out there?

10. A Democratic Chimpanzee Could Win California , New Jersey And New York.

Hillary knows that her path to the nomination is over, so now she chooses to play a game and only she and Bill Clinton know what the game is. I also believe that Bill Clinton has devised this complex situation.

Option 1.. Have John McCain beat Barack Obama by mortally wounding him like Ronald Reagan did Jerry Ford in 1976. Reagan returned to run and win in 1980 and Hillary could return to run in 2012.

Option 2 A John McCain / Hillary Clinton ticket.

Option 3. A Barack Obama / Hillary Clinton ticket. Being VP would position her better for the 2016 run as Hillary would be 68 to 69 by then.

Which Option do you choose to argue for.

If the Clintons are thinking of Option 1, then they need their heads examined as Democratic voters would never forgive them for throwing the election to the Republicans. It would be unforgivable. We've had to endure the pain and suffering of a Bush-imposed presidency and the Clintons think that Democrats would be either forgetful or forgiving for handing the presidency to the Party that has been screwing most Americans for the past 8 to 12 years?!!! No way, Jose.

Option 3, but with Hillary lurking he will have to double his security. This is no joke, I still remember Kennedy / Johnson.

yeah; but i think the clintons have no qualms about their ability to "spin themselves out" of taking the blame. so remember.

really, there's nothing that she can pull out that the republicans wouldn't also do. it's her doing exactly what she's doing now -- each day she continues -- that actually does the november damage. (imho.)

it's keeping the party in turmoil now and possibly even to and through the convention that torpedoes november.

#1 is definitely in their sights. Having "built" the party (by destroying it in the 90s), the Clintons feel they are owed the nomination, if not in 2008, then in 2012, over Obama & the Party's dead body.

#2 Would be the most honest. And they should propose Lieberman as their Sec State.

#3 Not gonna happen. First, Obama can't trust her in his administration. Second, Hillary wants no part of waiting until 2016.

Personally, I have had enough of 'old' people running this country into the ground, because they do not know how to change. We need change, in a big way, and that is not going to happen with Mac(even though I do like him). We need new thoughts and actions and if congress can not step up and work to make this happen, then they need to be replaced also.
If we do not move away from our current thought pattern we will be in the same situation with the new pres. as we are with the current 'cluster ****" and that could destroy America, as we remember it.
I believe it was Lenin who say something to the effect, that he was not worried about converting America to communism because it would destroy itself from within and you know what, that is exactly what we are doing.

Wake up America....

Yes, I would like the supers to step in if it is clear after the next bunch of primaries -- PA, NC, MT -- that it will be impossible for Clinton to overtake Obama in the pledged delegate count. In such an instance, to allow this race to continue would be to invite disaster. It would be much more preferable for the superdelegates to convene shortly thereafter and make their choice. That would give the eventual nominee ample time to heal the wounds of the Democratic party's faithful and prepare to deliver a lethal blow to the Republican party in the general. Heeeeeyaaaaahhhhh!

Chris is right. The dems could self destruct this summer and the whole race of is over. WHile we fight, McCain looks great and continues to be the media darling.

The only good option is for the super delegates to vote NOW that they will abide by states won, delegates won and popular votes. This way HRC will not be able to turn this over on a technicality.

As was said by someone I read, Can you emagine a black candidate who leads in elected delegates being turned away in a back-room deal? What planet are you living on? The reps would have a field day and the dems may as well disband.

In fact, if the dems can not win this time I believe it is time for a new party. If they dont win this time, they cant win anytime.
