In a new interview with National Journal, Sen. Chris Dodd says that continuing the Democratic primary race for the next several months would be "devastating," and that over the next several weeks, Democratic leaders "have to step up to the plate and say enough is enough."

A few excerpts from his interview:

Look, we've got five more months to go before the Democratic convention at the end of August and, candidly, we cannot go five more months with the kind of daily sniping that's going on and have a candidate emerge in that convention. My hope is that it will be Barack Obama, but if it's Hillary Clinton, she too will suffer, in my view, from this kind of a campaign that I think is undermining the credibility and the quality of the two candidates that we have. We have two very strong candidates. So I'm worried about this going on endlessly and to a large extent, Linda, the media, a lot of these cable networks, are enjoying this. It's what is keeping them alive financially. The fact that this thing is going on forever, back and forth every day, all night -- I don't think it's really helping the candidates or the political institutions.

Asked about the solution to ending the race:

Dodd: Well, the solution is -- look, we've got a contest coming up in Pennsylvania and one in North Carolina and Indiana very quickly afterwards. In my view, the outcome of those three races will determine -- I think the race has been determined, anyway, at this point. I think it's very difficult to imagine how anyone can believe that Barack Obama can't be the nominee of the party. I think that's a foregone conclusion, in my view, at this juncture given where things are.

But certainly over the next couple of weeks, as we get into April, it seems to me then, that the national leadership of this party has to stand up and reach a conclusion. And in the absence of doing that -- and that's not easy, and I realize it's painful. But the alternatives, allowing this sort of to fester over the months of June, and July and August, I think, are irresponsible. I think you have to make a decision, and hopefully the candidates will respect it and people will rally behind a nominee that, I think, emerges from these contests over the next month. That's my suggestion. That's what I would do.

...I mean, if a person wants to stay in the race, stay in the race. But if you have enough people rallying behind what appears to be the likely choice, and I believe the choice is Barack Obama, and I believe that will be the choice over the next several weeks, then I think you have to step up to the plate and say enough is enough. We want this to be over with. We want to get behind this candidate, and we want people to pull together to win that election in November, to build those majorities in the House and the Senate if we can, and then start doing the work on health care and Iraq and all these other issues that demand our attention.

I mean to break bread with Obama supporters.
But while they are so overrwrougtt it is hard to refrain from a game of tit-for-tat.

Better to give three cheers to the Clintons.
And let the chips fall where they may.

Or you could be an adult and offer reasoned arguments, rather than throwing a hissy fit over math that does not bode well for your candidate.

You're right, whizkid. I joined this site with an open mind. The third grade mentality and endless vulgarity of obama's supporters has closed it for me. It's embarassing to be a Dem anymore.

Oh, please. It is equal on both sides, and wiz is no angel.

While you are at it, go to Taylor Marsh, see if any Obamans are posting in among all the hatred directed at Obama. No Obamans permitted.

While I have not encountered such 3rd grade mentality quite yet I am still intrigued how it was capable of closing your mind. Usually such open mindedness is not so easily swayed by blatantly immature comments. I support Senator Obama but do not resort to disgusting talk about Senator Clinton. (Yes I would vote for her if she somehow found a way to win.) While you may find numerous, and yes, fervent, supporters for both sides I fail to see where the 3rd grade mentality has been prevalent. Unless of course this applies to anyone that disagrees with you?

Give it a rest.

Both sides have vulgar and immature supporters... some are paid for shills of their respective candidate. When you wade into the internet, there are bound to be leeches and piranhas.

I could just as easily say that Clinton's supporters turn me off from Clinton... even though Clinton herself has nothing to do with her supporters except for the occasional paid shill. The problem is, you can't tell who is an amployee and who is just plain stupid. The same for the Obama camp.

Take a deep breath.

Take a group of people that believe in a really noble virtue-- say, world peace. I guarantee that someone in that group is going to say something stupid, such as "there will be world peace once we get rid of all the (insert religous/ethnic group here)". Does that comment turn you off the virtue of world peace? If it does, then you are just as stupid for letting that person's statement affect your convictions.

I'm right there with you. I even worked as a campaign volunteer for Obama in 2004. But teh Obama supporters on this site have sealed teh deal for me. I'd rather vote McCain than Obama now.

The latest Pew Poll has Obama up 10 over Clinton, the same as a month ago.

I guess the Clintonista wet dream of Wright destroying Obama's chances are all dried up and forgotten.

No, I think both sides are entrenched. The problem facing Dems is measured by the 30% of Hillary supporters who report that they will vote for McCain if Obama in the nominee.

How can he win in the Fall with that type of number?

It really won't be the Democrat party at all if those numbers hold, and I suspect Wright was the final push for a lot of people. There is just no way he will appeal to the core Democrats now.

They can forgive Hillary the Bosnia story. They will not forgive Obama the God Damn America story.

The people who are too stupid to have researched the truth about the Wright story, were never going to vote for Obama for other reasons, just like there are people who would NEVER vote for a Clinton for reasons other than the Bonsia BOLD FACED lie.

The number of people vowing to vote for McWar will also change over time, and after Hillary has to pull a 360 and run around promoting Obama to bring the party back together.

She has proved to be an excellent liar, so I have no doubt that she can pull it off flawlessly.

Please forgive this one. As for not forgiving Obama, just please get a clue. Obama did not say those statements and does not support them. It is no where near the same as Hillary getting up and lying bold face to crowd after crowd.

As for the number you quote, it is meaningless until after the nominee is selected.

Hey--is Dodd blind? Can't he see that his candidate on the cusp of disaster? Get a good look at Obama, as he is on the proverbial political precipice and about to fall in. If you are really open and honest about this, do you really think that Obama can win against McCain with all the recent anti-american baggage that he has weighing him down now? I am so doubtful about this and I just believe that if Hillary can take the popular vote from this process, then she deserves the nomination. This would be the right thing to do in light of Obama and his pastor problem.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 02:44 AM on 03/28/2008

Nothing he has done can be construed as anti-American.

Rev Wright is not on the ballot. Move on.

Oh, Obama's numbers are back where the were a month ago. You got nothing.

So tell me. How large of a lead in Pledged Delegates can Obama have on June 10 and you still be OK with Clinton getting the nomination?

If he is only ahead by ten, are you OK there? (You could make an argument)

If he leads by 50, are you good with Clinton getting the nomination?

What if he leads by 100 delegates? Would you still want Hillary to get the nomination?

I think he is going to have a lead of no less than 145 pledged delegates. Are you prepared for the Super Delegates to overturn the will of the people who gave all those delegates to Obama?

Expected juvenile response: I don't care! Obamans are mean! What about MI and FL???????

I love the fact that Obama's poll numbers are back up to pre-Wright numbers.

Clinton supporters have been clinging to this notion that 'Obama's done because of the pastor scandal'.

Errr, no ... Clinton's gotten hurt more by this Bosnia thing, and Obama's back where he was.

Give it up already... this faint hope that Obama's going to implode ain't going to happen.

I'd think teh popular vote is a better gauge. The barbor shop straw poll caucus system means the least popular candidate can still bully his way to more delagates. But that means squat in November. I'll take teh candidate with more voters in important general election states with electoral college votes any day.

You keep forgetting the express purpose of the superdelegates is to overtuirn the vote when the caucus system has been manipulated to allow teh loony fringes to foist an unelectable candidate upon us. It's designed to prevent another McGovern travesty. That's EXACTLY WHY it was created.

After the next round of primaries when Hillary still doesn't stand a realistic chance, she will continue to spin reality to say she's still in it and more politicians and pundits will give her more slack to hang around. Dodd could just as well call for her to hang it up now. It's already over.

Sen. Dodd, who I have great admiration for, is denying a simple truth. This battle in the civilized format of American political discussion is worth carrying out. It is not a war or bloody murder. We have that going on in Iraq, Afghanistan, Darfur, Congo, Tibet. There is no comparison between the death of human beings and a spirited locking of horns over hot air. The good Senator needs to be working now on solutions to end the bloodletting. He was one who voted for real war in October 2002, but cannot bring his Majority Leader to help end it.

If Clinton was respectfully engaging Obama on the issues, instead of hurling kitchen sinks and any other refuse she could find at him, I would have no problem with the campaign continuing. But her campaign is negative and divisive, and far below Democratic ethical standards. I hate to use the Repbulicans as an example, but though everyone rolled their eyes at Mike Huckabee's insistence at staying in the race, he never slandered McCain or questioned his patriotism or qualifications for office. Huckabee just said he thought the Republicans should have a choice. Hillary chooses to demonize Obama and tell lie after lie. Her behavior has been obnoxious and offensive, and she needs to get the hell out of the race.

Last time I checked, Mr. Dodd is an honorable senator that has been fighting the good fight against warantless surveillance.

His "little rock" is representing we the people against the encroaching police state.

Why should good, decent people be insulted and ridiculed for having an opinion that undermines Hillary Clinton? What is in it for you? How come every person who was a good Democrat yesterday is a worthless traitor today when all they did was support Barack Obama? What gives? How many good people have to be attacked and intimidated before someone says, "ENOUGH IS ENOUGH"?

Do you have any decency?
