In a new interview with National Journal, Sen. Chris Dodd says that continuing the Democratic primary race for the next several months would be "devastating," and that over the next several weeks, Democratic leaders "have to step up to the plate and say enough is enough."

A few excerpts from his interview:

Look, we've got five more months to go before the Democratic convention at the end of August and, candidly, we cannot go five more months with the kind of daily sniping that's going on and have a candidate emerge in that convention. My hope is that it will be Barack Obama, but if it's Hillary Clinton, she too will suffer, in my view, from this kind of a campaign that I think is undermining the credibility and the quality of the two candidates that we have. We have two very strong candidates. So I'm worried about this going on endlessly and to a large extent, Linda, the media, a lot of these cable networks, are enjoying this. It's what is keeping them alive financially. The fact that this thing is going on forever, back and forth every day, all night -- I don't think it's really helping the candidates or the political institutions.

Asked about the solution to ending the race:

Dodd: Well, the solution is -- look, we've got a contest coming up in Pennsylvania and one in North Carolina and Indiana very quickly afterwards. In my view, the outcome of those three races will determine -- I think the race has been determined, anyway, at this point. I think it's very difficult to imagine how anyone can believe that Barack Obama can't be the nominee of the party. I think that's a foregone conclusion, in my view, at this juncture given where things are.

But certainly over the next couple of weeks, as we get into April, it seems to me then, that the national leadership of this party has to stand up and reach a conclusion. And in the absence of doing that -- and that's not easy, and I realize it's painful. But the alternatives, allowing this sort of to fester over the months of June, and July and August, I think, are irresponsible. I think you have to make a decision, and hopefully the candidates will respect it and people will rally behind a nominee that, I think, emerges from these contests over the next month. That's my suggestion. That's what I would do.

...I mean, if a person wants to stay in the race, stay in the race. But if you have enough people rallying behind what appears to be the likely choice, and I believe the choice is Barack Obama, and I believe that will be the choice over the next several weeks, then I think you have to step up to the plate and say enough is enough. We want this to be over with. We want to get behind this candidate, and we want people to pull together to win that election in November, to build those majorities in the House and the Senate if we can, and then start doing the work on health care and Iraq and all these other issues that demand our attention.

Yay. They need to move--and the sooner the better. Anyone see Hillary throw down the gauntlet on FOX news (Greta van susteren) last night? It was creeeepy. The superdels need to make their decision and let her start doing what she will asap. She's very likely to file a lawsuit. She made no bones about her intent to take the party down with her if she doesn't get what she wants. Her interview (part 2 if you view it from the FOX news site) will make your blood run cold. She seems to be in a very "Carville" kind of place.

He's a smart guy. He can fight telecom immunity and speak about the nomination contest. I know for a fact that he can read a teleprompt text in English and speak it in flawless Spanish.

I for one would advocate for Senator Dodd speaking much more than listening to run after run of you tube videos, edited clips, and out of context phrases, on both sides, mind you. I remember fondly the days of summer when Dodd, Biden, Edwards, Richardson, Gravel, Cucinich, Obama, and Clinton ( All of which we should be proud to put against Mcain) spoke rather respectfully of one another and inspired the Democratic base as well as many independents/Republicans to seek a new direction in this country. I miss these days immensely no matter how boring they were. :(
Since when are elected officials unable to speak/work intelligently on several issues at the same time? I would suggest you might have had too many years with a Bush White House.

Given how enthusiastic the 'mainstream corporate media' has been to date on Sen. Obama's behalf, I am just wondering when the other shoe drops.

Black men, with vaguely anti-Establishment rhetoric-- have heretofore never been promoted as serious presidential candidates--but now we have one with an apparently unlimited amount of cash.

Maybe the folks doing the promoting have another agenda?

I'm from NY. I would like to know why my Congressperson, who has already endorsed Clinton, is not changing positions to let Hillary know that she almost certainly cannot mathematically win this race anymore. If she doesn't realize that her own presidential race is over then how is she ever going to know when to pull out of Iraq? If just a few superdelagates from NY have the courage to reverse their positions like NM Governor Bill Richardson, Hillary would have to get the message.

These ex-democrats, The Clintonistas, are playing for 2012. Bloody Barack, make sure he loses against McCain. Make another run in 2012. Lets make them stop that game.. Its pretty clear that's where we are now.

For the good of the party, Hillary Clinton needs to bow out now. We all admire that she's a fighter, but enough is enough.

If she won't do this of her own accord, the super delegates need to step in and bring this to an end.

She should not be allowed to damage the party for the race in November.

As a Connecticut native from a politically active family--like Senator Dodd's--I could not disagree more with his sentiments.

Chris Dodd's relationship with pro-Pinochet investment banker Felix Rohatyn clouds his judgement..

Of course, the financial community wants the malleable Chicago Board of Trade guy, Obama.

As a CT native living in Oregon, I completely agree with him. I voted for Dodd when I lived there and respect his judgment. This race needs to end, even if it means that Oregon is once more regulated to rubber stamping what has already been decided.

The longer Clinton campaigns, the more it hurts the Democrats chances to win.

any responsible democrat would want this campaign to end.. the republicans have really helped keep the process going longer than necessary because they know it weakens the party. hillary will not win under any circumstances at this point. the only thing she can do is weaken the democratic party as a whole - creating a level playing field in an election year where the democrats were sure to win.

Excellent point...Obama is in the pocket of Wall Street, and as you point out, Chicago Trade crowd. The Obama fans here refuse to realize that their man that can do no wrong is as much a corporatist as Hillary and even John McCain are. They can assuage their progressive souls (if they truly have one) by thinking, because he has a very liberal voting record, he is the real deal for the left...but he has only voted differently ten times from Hillary in the Senate.

Hillary has to be forced to quit by party leaders or she and Bill will wreck our

chances of taking over the White House with a solid majority in both houses.

I would not vote for Hillary ever or under any circumstances. If she somehow manages to steal the nomination, I don't care if the GOP puts up Rumsfeld as the candidate, I would vote for him rather than Hillary and I would work for a veto-proof congress.

Senator Dodd has a very reasoned approach which protects the entire Democratic party from imploding. After April, the party leaders and superdelegates should honor the wll of we the people. This is only reflected in the popular vote and pledged delegates. The Clinton's have waged a NUCLEAR strategy within their own party - Mutually Assured Destruction. Let's hope the party leaders - including Al Gore - will help avoid a democratic meltdown, stand up and be counted soon!.

Dear Dod, You can not decide for me, OK? You are not getting this. You will lose a huge bloc of support for a woman candidate, oh gasp, gasp. How dare she stay in the race! Dodd, do you put on blinders when you proclaim your... what shall I say....Insight?? I'd rather vote for McCain than go to war with Obama and Samantha Powers.

When Richardson grew that beard, I thought, "He's losing his credibility with that appearance." Now we know that he really has.
