Aides to Sen. Hillary Clinton said on Thursday that they knew key fundraisers for her campaign were sending a letter to Nancy Pelosi, castigating the Speaker over her position on superdelegates and threatening, vaguely, to withhold campaign donations.

And while they did not go so far as to say they approved of the letter's content -- "we didn't know what was in it," said spokesman Phil Singer -- they did argue that the "letter speaks for itself."

"There is clearly a broad feeling among many Democrats and many people who are active in the party," said Singer, "that the role of superdelegates is to exercise independent judgment and make a decision that is best for the party and best for the country."

On Wednesday, Talking Points Memo posted a letter penned by some of the most influential fundraisers of the Clinton campaign, chastising Pelosi for suggesting that superdelegates "have an obligation to support the candidate who leads in the pledged delegate count as of June 3rd." Such a position, the authors wrote, "runs counter to the party's intent in establishing super-delegates in 1984."

To make sure their voices hit home, the Clinton backers reminded Pelosi, somewhat opaquely, that they had been the financial backbone of the very committee that helped elect her Democratic majority.

"We have been strong supporters of the DCCC," they wrote. "We therefore urge you to clarify your position on super-delegates and reflect in your comments a more open view to the optional independent actions of each of the delegates at the National Convention in August."

Early on Thursday, the Center for Responsive Politics calculated that the signatories of the letter had, over the span of more than a decade, put $24 million behind Democratic causes.

Asked whether the Clinton campaign thought it would be appropriate for party financiers to threaten to withhold funds should Pelosi not change her stance, aides to the New York Democrat restated their commitment to helping build a larger Democratic congressional majority.

"As someone who is a former executive director of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, who spent a lot of years working in the House, who has both friends and family working in the House, I feel, as do most of the people I know, absolutely committed to helping elect Democrats to the House in 2008," said Clinton's communications director, Howard Wolfson. "I believe strongly in Nancy Pelosi's leadership. Obviously, some of our donors had an issue that they wanted to put into writing... But Senator Clinton and Bill Clinton will not take a backseat to anyone when it comes to helping Democrats or helping to fund the party committees. And the people here at every level are absolutely committed to large democratic majorities in 2008 and doing everything we can to helping achieve those large majorities."

On Wednesday, a spokesperson for Pelosi said that the Speaker was "confident" in her proclamation that superdelegates -- when deciding between Sen. Barack Obama and Clinton -- should take into primary consideration the tallies of both the popular vote and the pledged delegate count.

"The speaker believes it would do great harm to the Democratic Party if superdelegates are perceived to overturn the will of the voters," said Brendan Daly, a spokesman for Pelosi. "This has been her position throughout this primary season, regardless of who was ahead at any particular point in delegates or votes."

These rich Clinton donors don't understand that their time already is past. One presidential candidate can raise more money on the Internet in one month than these 20 donors have given the Democratic Party in their collective lifetimes. Pelosi and the Democratic Party cannot be hijacked by their threats.

That's funny guy. Guess you do not look to closely at the Obama fundraising list. Talk about rich donors!

90% of his money comes from small donors. You should really try using facts and math next time. Oh and the average contribution of his donations is $109. Not exactly fat cat city.

Clinton and Obama have weathly donors, however, Obama has more smaller donors. According to the national campaign stats, his average donation is 200 dollars.

The Obama campaign has wrote the new play book on fundraising.

He'd be happy to have 2,000,000 rich donors backing him. The average donation is $109. Lots more to come. Keep your eyes peeled.

The difference is Obama's donors are not threatening to take their money and run from the Democratic Party if Pelosi and the Party don't bend the rules for them.

Obama has more than one million donors---which is unprecedented---and the "rich" donors represent a relatively small number.

what's even more amazing....that average people who don't have a seperate account in the Caymans, are outnumbering those rich-cats like 50 to 1....hilliary can't say the same. She raised 35-million in February, $21.5 mil of which, she had to earmark for her General Elec. Fund (she can't touch it). Looks like she could only get those who already maxed out to donate again....she can't keep raiding the same til'....it's eventually going to go dry... long before Obama's does.

Hillary Clinton is basically turning into a Lieberman right before our eyes. A person who is so destructive in the party, and you try and try to work with them until you finally figure out that they're in it for themselves, and they're not really in the party, or worse, they're ACTUALLY a mole working for the other party.

Whichever it is, the party needs to cut her loose, and her twenty donors. Let her go be McCain's running mate. They do not represent us any more, and perhaps like Lieberman, they never really did. They may have been actual republicans from the very beginning. Bill backed Reagan's media reforms, and gave us NAFTA which was a give away to big business that took an equal amount out of the pockets of the middle class.

There may be other Lieberman-Clinton-like candidates in the party, so to prevent our hard earned donations from going into their hands, I recommend donating only to individual candidates you believe in until they clean up this mess. For me, that would be Barack Obama and Al Franken, Sibelius, McCaskill, etc., otherwise your blanket donations to the party could flow into the campaign warchests of other self-aggrandizing politicians who are playing the triangulation game with our constitutional rights, our soldiers lives, and our livelihoods, like Clinton and Lieberman.

Uh, no it doesn't. Anyone who has watched collegiate and university politics first hand knows better.

He could have been an adjunct professor, an instructor; there are loads of titles for people who teach at the post secondary level. It is pretty serious business for those
involved.

These special interests don't stand a chance against the over 1.2 million small donors that Obama has built. Help him and our party grow that database and be a part of the calvary that frees America's politics from those special interest groups that Clinton and McCain are aligned with! Remember this is also about the Supreme Court Justices, if McCain gets in, we are going to have some pretty tough times ahead for our country and our children. Be apart of the revolution!

There are some people who are willing to give up their lives for the good of this country... then there are some people who cannot even give up their obviously lost nomination for the good of this country...

The 20% of the Clinton supporters that won't vote for Obama when he wins the primary election will go back to being right wing of the Republican party where they came from or belong...

For the other 80%, please get on board with us and help us end this. We know who won this fight, it is time to start the healing and get behind this wonderful candidate! Please take another look at Obama...it isn't like switching teams, we are all Americans...join the anti-lobbyist movement!

Quid pro quo. The backers give the Dems money and as a result expect special treatment.

Hillary is a shill for the backers and likes what they have to say, so she stands behind it.

Meanwhile the will of the people gets ignored.

This again confirms that the 16 yrs of "experience" HRC is so proud of are more of a liability than an asset.

The Clintons owe so many favors to so many people (with their narrow agendas) it's not funny.
That's why we have term limits.
We deserve a clean slate.

I signed the letter and added, "Ms. Pelosi, we have your back. I'm so proud of the job you are doing in the House! I am equally proud of the way you are standing up to the bullying of certain supporters of Ms. Clinton. We need more leadership like yours in Congress. "

If you are as disgusted at Clinton's campaign tactics as I am, I urge you to sign it too.

It is a very sad situation when a candidate does not have the ability to convince the voters to vote for them , drags out a large supply of garbage they have been saving and throw it at the opponent . Mr Joe Wilson was a well respected person until he decided to help his friend in way that is demeaning to himself and his friend . He should spend his time and efforts selling his friend's good points which improves his friend's esteem in the eyes of the voters and convinces the voters to like his friend better than the opponent . IF THAT IS POSSIBLE . He should be reminded that astute voters do not vote because of garbage . The leading candidate has made a better impression with the voters and is offering something his candidate does not have or he and his candidate does not have the ability to sell .

So this week the Clinton camp wants the election to be decided by the superdelegates. Last week it was the poor, disenfranchised voters of Florida and Michigan. Wonder what it'll be next week? A coin toss? Arm wrestling contest? High card takes all?

This suggestion is more serious than it first appears. Since Hillary now is leading the Tonya Harding Wing of the Democratic Party, remember that Tonya ended up her career working as a mud wrestler. The precedent is right there in front of us.

I am so mad. Was just watching MSNBC video of Schuster talking with Joe Scarborough. Schuster says Super Delegates have told him that Clintons have been threatening Super Delegates, i.e. "We remember our friends and we don't forget our enemies." "You'll be off the president's list." (Bill Clinton's list?) What a crock these people are. Let's all donate to the DNC with a note that it's to replace Clinton's threats from her rich supporters. Lots of little gifts added up to $55 million last month for Obama. Let's take our party back! DONATE TO THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY!!!

Also notice those morons didn't say a word about Michigan or Florida until Obama was clearly winning against Clinton. The DNC needs to decide if they are going to let Clinton destroy the Democratic Party and lose the 2008 election or not. Everyone above the age of 2 years knows HRC stands a much better chance of blowing it than Obama. It's clear that Obama scares the hell out of the GOP idiots, just watch Fox News and CNBC's Kudlow. They know who satnds a better chance of beating McCain. It's time this absurdity was brought to a close. HCR has lost the thing, and it's time she lives with that and moves on.

Clinton has espoused the same principles from Day 1.

Voters vote.

The polls don't decide. The political writers don't decide. The blogs don't decide. The endorsements don't decide.

This is OUR election. Voters.

Let THEM decide.

And anyone who blocks the voters?

You are stupid beyond comprehension.

Totally stupid to block them.

Totally.
