Daily Show's Stewart 'Quietly Visiting' Ailing Iraq Soldiers

Comedy Central's Jon Stewart was in Washington, DC Tuesday night for the USO-Metro Awards Dinner, where the Daily Show host was honored with a Merit Award from Joint Chiefs vice-chair General James Cartwright. If it seems an odd fit for a comic who consistently lampoons the Bush administration, the Washington Post's Reliable Source informs readers that all the comedic comfort Stewart gives critics of the Iraq War is matched by his efforts to comfort our wounded soldiers:

Turns out the comedian has been quietly visiting soldiers at Walter Reed and Bethesda hospitals, trips he began in 2004 to better understand the Iraq war. "I felt that I was living in a world of theory," he told the audience, "but I hadn't touched the reality and the humanity of it." The first patient he met was "funnier than I was" -- and Stewart's been a regular ever since.

Stewart told the Post, "I certainly get a lot more out of it than they do...If anything, it's made me angrier... You can be for the war, against the war, but you can't be uninformed about it. To see the human cost is part of the equation."

I'm of course, not surprised. Jon Stewart is not only a very funny guy, but obviously a caring one. Good for him for doing this for years. And none of us would have known about this still, if others hadn't decided to rightly commend him for the good work he's done.

Bravo Jon Stewart. And it's not even that I'm biased, it's that he does stuff like this, that proves I'm right to like him. Well done.

Next up? Stop giving McCain a free pass. He managed to do it last year, but since has gone back to being a fangurrl for McCain. The show needs to start giving McCain the same kind of treatment they give everyone else. Just being fair to McCain and point out the unfairness of the rest of the press to him, is all I ask. And what Jon Stewart and The Daily Show have done brilliantly for years.

A couple points about Jon Stewart.

It is obvious from the way he treats his guests that he is a nice person. He is not out to insult anyone to their faces. He treats his guests with respect . . . unless . .

What he thinks is missing in American politics and media coverage is a respectful dialogue on the issues, and based on facts not spin. Which is why he said Crossfire was "Hurting America" and why he went after Chris Mathews. He has Wingnuts on his show and threats them with respect, but that doesn't mean he agrees with them. But just because we disagree with someones politics does not mean they are bad people. Or need to be insulted. There is enough of that BS going on all over cable TV.

Which brings me to McCain. As I recall the second to last appearance on the DS Stewart took McCain to pieces. McCain lost it. Watch that before you condemn Stewart.

Further: I feel myself to be as liberal as they come. And I retain a fondness for McCain as well. He USED to have an excellent environmental record. And I got his principled support on a local environmental issue. For that I will always been grateful and respect the man.

But his recent pandering to the wingnuts in order to fulfill his ambition greatly distresses me. And, of course his views on Iraq are as wrong as wrong can be.

But I do feel he

I love the typo that substitutes "threats" for "treats" as in "treats with respect!

Stewart threatens these guys by treating them with respect because his subtle prodding can threaten their complacency better than the sort of over the top bickering that many in the media substitute for commitment.

McCain will continue to come onto the show and exhibit is fussy brand of old school patriotism, and the public will see him for what he is--a charming older man who is on the wrong side of history.

Jon is a lot more thoughtful and intelligent than most people give him credit for. If there is any doubt about that try to find his appearence on Bill Moyer's Journal. His show is blessed relief from the talking heads in the MSM.

NO MORE "RELIABLE SOURSES!!!" If you have the balls to say something to the press, at least have the balls to tell me your name. I have no reason what-so-ever to ever even listen to you, let alone BELIEVE you, IF I DON'T KNOW WHO YOU ARE.

People who say this dont work in the press.

I keep telling myself, "Don't read the comments..." But I can't seem to stop...like a train wreck--can't look, can't NOT look.

People would benefit a lot by simply exercising their intuitive ability. Jon Stewart cares. He is not so much interested in glory, but in being a real person and balancing that with being in the spotlight.

I'd bet psychologists scan these threads, here and elsewhere. Their insights would fill volumes.

Wow. I never even dreamed he was doing anything like this. The fact that he kept it silent for almost 4 years and out of the press is even more impressive. Way to go Jon.

Thank God for Jon Stewart. Until he and the Daily Show came along, politicians opened their mouths and words came out, but they could have been speaking Klingon for all I knew or cared. Jon Stewart translates what they say and do into terms the rest of us can understand.

Jon Stewart made me realize that I am not alone in wondering what type of crazy will judge another person's patriotism by whether or not he wears a lapel pin or if he holds his hand a certain way when the National Anthem plays. I thought *required* hand gestures at public events went out with Hitler.

Jon Stewart does not speak to me as if I were a two-year old idiot who must be told about "evil-doers" and "weapons of mass destruction" in words and sentences with few syllables using action movie euphemisms like "smoke 'em out" and "hunt 'em down."

Jon Stewart makes me laugh at things politicians do that are so incredulously stupid...Truth really is more unbelievable than fiction.

For those of you who have a beef with him visiting vets, how many of us who aren't vets and don't have family who were injured vets can say we've even *been* to a veteran's hospital? The fact that he's been making these visits for 4 years and I've NEVER seen a publicity picture of him at a Vet's hospital tells me all I need to know.

Good for you, Jon Stewart.

Jon is the one person left on television who tells it like it is....wringing humanity out of pathos and devastation. Forget Olbermann or Matthews....watch John night after night to find out what's really going on with our insane government. Thank you.

Jon Stewart is very funny, and I love his show. I love that he has been visiting vets. I'm fairly sure the vets he visited have appreciated it.

If you want to question his intentions, that's your prerogative, but keep in mind that he has actually regularly been dragging his butt over to some vet's bedside for the last 4 years. Have you done as much?

This does not surprise me at all. Stewart's unassuming compassion and kindness are apparent in much of what he does and says. I don’t know if I could have made it through the past several years without his humor and perspectives!

So we need press instead of pundants. I believe that was postulated before....umm by Stewart maybe? Of course we must be able to rely on the press - they must bring forward facts that are true.

This is what makes Iraq different then Vietnam. When we were in Vietnam people hated the war and hated the soldiers almost the same. At least we still have a respect for our soldiers. John doesn't support the war, but at least he appreciates the people that fight for the citizens of this country.

I dont see a lot of other entertainers visiting soldiers in the hospital but they sure grab all publicity, i.e. with politicians, promoting themselves and their projects, give me a break ... the guy is doing something worthwhile...sure beats ones doing nothing

I wish all people who consider themselves "Americans" would take a "hands-on" approach like Mr. Stewart. Being a democracy means "getting involved". Tax breaks during a time of war is not getting involved.
