Jeremiah Wright

In March 2007, New York Times reporter Jodi Kantor published a brief story about how Rev. Jeremiah Wright had been uninvited from delivering the invocation before Barack Obama's official presidential announcement.

Wright responded by writing the following letter:

March 11, 2007

Jodi Kantor
The New York Times
9 West 43rd Street
New York,
New York 10036-3959

Dear Jodi:

Thank you for engaging in one of the biggest misrepresentations of the truth I have ever seen in sixty-five years. You sat and shared with me for two hours. You told me you were doing a "Spiritual Biography" of Senator Barack Obama. For two hours, I shared with you how I thought he was the most principled individual in public service that I have ever met.

For two hours, I talked with you about how idealistic he was. For two hours I shared with you what a genuine human being he was. I told you how incredible he was as a man who was an African American in public service, and as a man who refused to announce his candidacy for President until Carol Moseley Braun indicated one way or the other whether or not she was going to run.

I told you what a dreamer he was. I told you how idealistic he was. We talked about how refreshing it would be for someone who knew about Islam to be in the Oval Office. Your own question to me was, Didn't I think it would be incredible to have somebody in the Oval Office who not only knew about Muslims, but had living and breathing Muslims in his own family? I told you how important it would be to have a man who not only knew the difference between Shiites and Sunnis prior to 9/11/01 in the Oval Office, but also how important it would be to have a man who knew what Sufism was; a man who understood that there were different branches of Judaism; a man who knew the difference between Hasidic Jews, Orthodox Jews, Conservative Jews and Reformed Jews; and a man who was a devout Christian, but who did not prejudge others because they believed something other than what he believed.

Story continues below

I talked about how rare it was to meet a man whose Christianity was not just "in word only." I talked about Barack being a person who lived his faith and did not argue his faith. I talked about Barack as a person who did not draw doctrinal lines in the sand nor consign other people to hell if they did not believe what he believed.

Out of a two-hour conversation with you about Barack's spiritual journey and my protesting to you that I had not shaped him nor formed him, that I had not mentored him or made him the man he was, even though I would love to take that credit, you did not print any of that. When I told you, using one of your own Jewish stories from the Hebrew Bible as to how God asked Moses, "What is that in your hand?," that Barack was like that when I met him. Barack had it "in his hand." Barack had in his grasp a uniqueness in terms of his spiritual development that one is hard put to find in the 21st century, and you did not print that.

As I was just starting to say a moment ago, Jodi, out of two hours of conversation I spent approximately five to seven minutes on Barack's taking advice from one of his trusted campaign people and deeming it unwise to make me the media spotlight on the day of his announcing his candidacy for the Presidency and what do you print? You and your editor proceeded to present to the general public a snippet, a printed "sound byte" and a titillating and tantalizing article about his disinviting me to the Invocation on the day of his announcing his candidacy.

I have never been exposed to that kind of duplicitous behavior before, and I want to write you publicly to let you know that I do not approve of it and will not be party to any further smearing of the name, the reputation, the integrity or the character of perhaps this nation's first (and maybe even only) honest candidate offering himself for public service as the person to occupy the Oval Office.

Your editor is a sensationalist. For you to even mention that makes me doubt your credibility, and I am looking forward to see how you are going to butcher what else I had to say concerning Senator Obama's "Spiritual Biography." Our Conference Minister, the Reverend Jane Fisler Hoffman, a white woman who belongs to a Black church that Hannity of "Hannity and Colmes" is trying to trash, set the record straight for you in terms of who I am and in terms of who we are as the church to which Barack has belonged for over twenty years.

The president of our denomination, the Reverend John Thomas, has offered to try to help you clarify in your confused head what Trinity Church is even though you spent the entire weekend with us setting me up to interview me for what turned out to be a smear of the Senator; and yet The New York Times continues to roll on making the truth what it wants to be the truth. I do not remember reading in your article that Barack had apologized for listening to that bad information and bad advice. Did I miss it? Or did your editor cut it out? Either way, you do not have to worry about hearing anything else from me for you to edit or "spin" because you are more interested in journalism than in truth.

Forgive me for having a momentary lapse. I forgot that The New York Times was leading the bandwagon in trumpeting why it is we should have gone into an illegal war. The New York Times became George Bush and the Republican Party's national "blog." The New York Times played a role in the outing of Valerie Plame. I do not know why I thought The New York Times had actually repented and was going to exhibit a different kind of behavior.

Maybe it was my faith in the Jewish Holy Day of Roshashana. Maybe it was my being caught up in the euphoria of the Season of Lent; but whatever it is or was, I was sadly mistaken. There is no repentance on the part of The New York Times. There is no integrity when it comes to The Times. You should do well with that paper, Jodi. You looked me straight in my face and told me a lie!

Sincerely and respectfully yours,

Reverend Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr., Senior Pastor
Trinity United Church of Christ

Isn't it interesting that the guy the media/right is trying to label a racist monster actually comes off as tolerant, intelligent and informed. Hmmmmm? It's almost as if they got this whole Jerimiah Wright issue all wrong. It's almost as if they are showing us who they are buy trying to label someone else as such...or something like that.

Great letter. THis should be posted and forwarded everywhere. And we should do the same with the donors in the Clinton campaign pressuring Pelosi on the superdelegate issue.

How the mighty have fallen

You think this is overkill, what do you think will happen if he gets the nomination?

This is their entire smear campaign - all laid out for them by BO himself

The "Black Church" reflects the people in the pews. Color and culture. Paranoia, victimology, conspiracy mongering, and political agitating are staples on the menu. That said, other churches have their own baggage. Is Wright getting a raw deal? Well, if you get into politics, you can expect to get burned. Clergy who try to hide behind the bible while spouting political mumbo jumbo deserve what they get. (i.e.: Jimmy Swaggart) So what does this all say about Obama? Depends on the eyes of the beholders. Frankly, he and the rest of the candidates will likely do what most people seem to do with their churchgoing. They go to church on Sunday and raise Hell the rest of the week.

So they've been railroading him from the beginning. Boy the "powers that be" sure are threatened when even one man with one congregation starts telling truth to power, huh?

He doesn't need my pity, but I feel sorry for Reverend Wright. I watched his "chickens" sermon and I wept at the obvious painful love he feels for this country - that he shared with me and I shared with him. Some might call me a traitor or anti-American, but I found his words inspiring and I would be proud to go to that church where they tell it like it is, or at least as passionately as they feel it. His one hope was that the MSM would not use him to smear Obama, but they have done that over and over and it is sad and shameful and a waste.

I don't believe in Organized Religion - I don't really even believe in "God" the Man, per se. But I do believe in Reverend Wright and his great inspiration and anger borne of love for this country and love for Obama and even love for me - this white woman in the south.

BOTTOM LINE:
Jodi Kantor represents the thinking of the AIPAC/Likkud.................to stop Obama at all costs..
Although friendly to Israel, Obama is an unknown player and Israel is concerned that the money train might slow under a Obama Administration.

Can I get an AMEN!!!! It's about time! I'm sure someone will spin this into something Reverend Wright REALLY means, because we all know that the media tells the truth, no matter what they are told to their faces. It's ludicrous. It's why I dropped out of journalism. And why does it happen? Because the people who don't know how to tell the truth, are trying to keep the good people who ARE telling the truth, out of the oval office. You can all spin it the way you like, it's not going to change the impeccable and respectable character of the next President of the United States...

...BARACK OBAMA!!

So this is the crazed, foaming-at-the-mouth lunatic the MSM has been presenting to us. He sounds like a thoughtful, intelligent man, and in this letter he sounds justifiably annoyed.

A beautiful letter that will lose it's heart felt message in the minds of cynics unfortunately. This written by a man who became an excuse for hate, instead of Obama's message of unification and a chance to finally start the healing process for a sickness that ails America.
The clock is ticking while some of you still carry on with your faux outrage.

Wow, talk about hypocrisy!

This man is a preacher, and he is attacking a journalist over integrity? Really? The NYT may have had its fair share of problems lately, but the majority of their existence is not based around lies and deception.

Organized religion is a shame, and the single biggest source of problems for humanity (always has been), and this man makes a living selling it. Who is he to accuse anyone of being dishonest or immoral.

He is also just downright ignorant, with such brilliant statements as, "...the integrity or the character of perhaps this nation's first (and maybe even only) honest candidate offering himself for public service as the person to occupy the Oval Office."

Obviously the man needs to spend a little more time reading real history books, and not that book which falsely passes for history, the bible. (He might also do well to realize that being the "first" automatically makes you the "only" when speaking in the present tense).

Enough. Enough hypocrisy from the Obama campaign, and enough with the religion. It has no place in our government.

Not only does Obama have a hatred filled anti -american preacher for 20 years , but also has a 17 year history with an indicted felon Sen. Obama will not disclose what cases he worked on that involved Tony Rezko or his companies: Obama campaign has not released which cases Obama worked on involving Rezko/Rezmar. "Asked what Rezko cases Obama worked on, Miner (a firm partner) told the Sun-Times, 'We’ll put together a list of the cases he worked on involving Rezko/Rezmar in the next day or two.' That was March 13 [2007]. He never provided the information." [Chicago Sun-Times, 4/23/07] Sen. Obama has not released his tax returns, except for 2006: Sen. Barack Obama’s ties to indicted dealmaker Antoin “Tony” Rezko include an internship senator Obama provided the son of a contributor at the request of Rezko.Rezko was indicted in October for allegedly trying to collect nearly $6 million in kickbacks from government deals and trying to shake down a Hollywood producer for $1.5 million in campaign contributions to Gov. Blagojevich. Obama and Rezko have been friends since 1990, and the Wilmette businessman has raised as much as $60,000 in campaign contributions for him.

Obviously, you're willing to look only at the accusations. I bet you never bothered looking for explanation. It's thanks to people like you that Bush got elected a second time.

It seems that Obama's white hatred anti-semite pastor isn't his only problems..
Obama refuses to name the UBS broker that purchased the stocks in his 'quasi-blind' trust. "Obama had about $100,000 he wanted to invest in 2005.
The money was a portion of the $1.2 million he got from a book contract. He said Wednesday he decided the $100,000 could be put into something
"more high risk" and asked a friend to recommend a stock broker. That friend was donor George W. Haywood, who held what the New York Times
called "major" positions in the two stocks Obama ended up owning, Skyterra and AVI BioPharma…. Obama declined to name the UBS broker." [Sweet
column, Chicago Sun-Times, 3/8/07]

I too was disappointed that I could not refer to the said NYT article that Wright protested against. I did a search, and here is what I found.

The article Rev. Wright was quarrelling with was published March 5, 2005. http://www.nytimes.com/2007/03/06/us/politics/06obama.html?_r=1&ref=politics&oref=slogin
It is actually a tasteless piece, given all that Wright had told Jodi Kantor, and Kantor’s later, more detailed April 30, 2007 piece (after Wright’s protest letter here) proved just that.

The article incurred Obama a lot of condemnation, not only from right wingers for subscribing to Black liberation theology but also from radical Black groups for throwing his pastor under the bus, as indicated in this blog: http://skepticalbrotha.wordpress.com/2007/03/06/obama-disses-his-pastor/
April 30, 2007: http://www.nytimes.com/2007/04/30/us/politics/30obama.html?pagewanted=all

This second article should have been in, and had Ms. Kantor written it first, Wright would not have written in the manner he does here. He might have called Ms. Kantor for a friendly chat, congratulated her for doing an incisive article, and maybe quibbled with something here and there, but not something he would have done via an open letter.
