Oliver Stone Casts Parents Of "W"

Variety   |   March 27, 2008 08:34 AM

Oliver Stone has cast the parents for his Bush film, which will begin filming next month. In January Stone cast "No Country for Old Men" star Josh Brolin as the current president, and yesterday Elizabeth Banks was cast as Laura.
Reports Variety:

Director Oliver Stone has set James Cromwell to play George Herbert Walker Bush and Ellen Burstyn to play former first lady Barbara Bush in "W," a drama about the formative years of their son, President George W. Bush...

Cromwell recently made another fact-based foray in a film about an iconic political figure: He played Prince Philip alongside Helen Mirren in "The Queen."

Cromwell is also known for movies like "Spider-Man" and "Babe." Burstyn has appeared in movies like "Requiem for a Dream" and HBO's "Big Love."

Where is the Clinton movie. If he's as popular as the media tells us you'd think people would want to see that.

Cromwell played a president in " Clear and Present Danger", which I thought was very much a fairly good likeness and rendering of Poppy.

He was corrupt in that movie, too. Didn't mind sending boys out to die for the country's secret agendas, as long as there was someone else to take the blame or clean it up.

I love Ellen Burstyn and I'm glad she has the work, but I hate seeing her portray Barbara Bush.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 01:52 PM on 03/28/2008

Barbara Bush should be computer generated. You know, like the Hulk.

[huhuhuhuhuhuh- I kill me..:) ]

Love Oliver Stones movies, but do we really need to see more of the Bushes
I can't think of one person who would be even slightly interested.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 01:35 AM on 03/28/2008

I agree. I could not stand the pain of watching this movie. After W. Ieaves I don't want to have to look at another Bush in my lifetime. I imagine others feel the same. I hope O.S. knows what he's doing....

Oh, there are so many good ones:

Max Shrenck as W.
Colin Clive as Poppy Bush
Dwight Frye as any delusional Repuke lover/insect eater.
Reginald Marsh as Cheney ( he would do a REAL good job )

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 12:56 AM on 03/28/2008

Ellen Burstyn played the mother of a demon-possessed child in "The Exorcist".

Her casting in "W": perfect.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 10:47 PM on 03/27/2008

These two are both excellent actors. Perfect for these roles.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 10:05 PM on 03/27/2008

I guess Satan and Lucretia Borgia were booked.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 08:53 PM on 03/27/2008

i can't believe someone beat me to the casting choice of our first president as the mother of evil.
note to o' stone , the formerly great director of such classics as 'u-turn' and 'nixon'. you , sir, must be one hell of a salesman, or have some great dope ; you apparently have secured the financing ,somehow, for this doomed enterprise. a sucker born every minute. may i suggest some casting choices now that this [horror, tragedy, comedy?] movie is being made? yes? good answer.
karl rove= elmer fudd
cheney=pumpkin head , available on hiatus from the halloween series
the twins=britney spears, in a boffo dual role
andy dick=andy card

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 07:51 PM on 03/27/2008

Philip Seymour Hoffman as Karl Rove!

For some reason, that just makes perfect sense to me.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 05:16 PM on 03/27/2008

Good one!

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 01:13 AM on 03/28/2008

And the entire republican party will be played by..Alfred E Neumann.."What me worry?"

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 05:11 PM on 03/27/2008

Hopefully Stone will include how important birth control can be in saving our country from itself!

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 05:08 PM on 03/27/2008

I propose John Travolta as Barbara Bush. He could simply put a white wig over the make up he underwent in Hairspray - of course with alot more wrinkles and sagging flesh. Or if he's not available howabout putting a white wig on a fat prune? Nowadays with CGI it could work. I really don't give such rude comments but in her case I will make an exception.

A film about Bush Jr.'s formative years? What formation? It never even happened. What we have in this White House is a man who never grew up. Glad to see Ellen Burstyn has been cast though. She's perfect for the part of the Dowager Empress.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 03:23 PM on 03/27/2008

If these folks had been Dubya's parents, he'd have turned out OK. This casting is utterly unbelievable. ;-)

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 03:12 PM on 03/27/2008

That's why they call it "acting".

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 04:39 PM on 03/27/2008

I hope the Bushs are depicted as the "crime family" they are.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 02:58 PM on 03/27/2008

Ellen Burstyn, even at this older age, is too pretty to play the
mean spirited Bawa Bush.

Brolin will probably be good, especially if he has a speech coach who teaches him to talk in broken english and smirk alot.

Who is going to play Dick Cheney??

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 02:53 PM on 03/27/2008

Danny Devito, reprising his role as the Penquin.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 03:16 PM on 03/27/2008

Dr. Evil.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 03:14 PM on 03/27/2008

Put a white wig on Sasquatch and you've got Barbara "Let them eat cake" Bush.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 02:15 PM on 03/27/2008

That hag who played Danny Devito's mother in "Throw Mama From the Train" would've been great as Babs.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 02:10 PM on 03/27/2008

Oliver Stone is good..but I wouldn't walk across the street to a free showing on this movie of the bushs. We KNOW about the Bushs...much more than I ever wanted to know and I am so sorry that I even know the name.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 02:10 PM on 03/27/2008

James Cromwell was in "Spider-Man"? That's news to me.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 02:05 PM on 03/27/2008

A shame that Cromwell is too old to play GW. As Stretch Cunningham on "All in the Family" he proved how adept he was at playing blithering dimwits. Also a shame that Peter Boyle died before he got the part he was born to play: Barbara Bush. In a wig like Giamatti wore in the John Adams series, Boyle would've been a dead-ringer for the former first lady. And a resourceful actor like Boyle would've figured out how to deepen his voice for the role.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 01:58 PM on 03/27/2008

James Cromwell is brilliant, both as an actor and as an activist. He will be excellent.
Ellen Burstyn is also terrific, but I would have tried to get Louise Fletcher to play the bug-eyed b itch.

Here's another suggestion: Steve Buscemi to play boytoy Jeff Gannon.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 01:37 PM on 03/27/2008

Cromwell was also Zefram Cochrane in First Contact, and Star Trek: Enterprise and other episodes from the franchise. He was also Stretch Cunningham on earlier episodes of All in the Family.

He's ridiculously tall. Something like 6', 8" or 9". I'm a big fan from the Star Trek connection though.

Live long and prosper...

Oooooh-ooooh! Just as good: Angela Lansbury! She could reprise her role in "The Manchurian Candidate"!

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 01:58 PM on 03/27/2008

Can we get Phillip Symore Hoffman to camp up his "Truman" to play Karl Rove?

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 03:06 PM on 03/27/2008

Oh you mean the guy who kicked Ann Richards, Kerry, and Gore's ass?

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 03:32 PM on 03/27/2008

No the guy that licks George's.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 03:55 PM on 03/28/2008

Jessica Tandy, although she was too small, would have been good.
(R.I.P. Jessica.) She played mean quite well.
