Time Mag Cover: "How Al Gore Could Save The Democrats"

Huffington Post   |   March 27, 2008 09:08 AM

With Democrats beginning to voice fears about a long summer of two candidates sniping over electability, the name of unofficial party elder Al Gore has resurfaced. Gore was tossed around early and often as a potential nominee, complete with his own grass roots recruiting party. However, the former Vice President and Nobel laureate assiduously avoided exhortations to run.

Nevertheless, the Gore question is coming back. Joe Klein is the latest to make the case for Al Gore coming into the Democratic race in the case of a brokered convention:

"Let's say the elders of the Democratic Party decide, when the primaries end, that neither Obama nor Clinton is viable. ... All they'd have to do would be to convince a significant fraction of their superdelegate friends, maybe fewer than 100, to announce that they were taking a pass on the first ballot at the Denver convention, which would deny the 2,025 votes necessary to Obama or Clinton. What if they then approached Gore and asked him to be the nominee, for the good of the party-and suggested that he take Obama as his running mate? ... A prominent fund raiser told me, 'Gore-Obama is the ticket a lot of people wanted in the first place.'"

Meanwhile, Jason Horowitz this week tried to outline the timing of a Gore endorsement:

"If Gore were to weigh in, he would have to do so before the superdelegates begin breaking for either Obama or Clinton," said a former Gore adviser, after laying out the various scenarios that might prompt the former vice president to get involved. "The superdelegates constitute the last true contest in this race. And for many, Gore is someone they talk to, listen to, and whom a lot of them admire and respect. Having him make a closing argument for either candidate would carry significant weight with some of these last-man-standing voters."

And earlier this week, Rep. Tim Mahoney (D-FL) suggested that Al Gore as an alternate coming out of a brokered convention:

"If it (the nomination process) goes into the convention, don't be surprised if someone different is at the top of the ticket," Mahoney said.

A compromise candidate could be someone such as former vice president Al Gore, Mahoney said last week during a meeting with this news organization's editorial board.

If either Clinton or Obama suggested to a deadlocked convention a ticket of Gore-Clinton or Gore-Obama, the Democratic Party would accept it, Mahoney said.

As a life-long Dem--spare me--Gore rhymes with whore. And for very good reasons.

Gore is interested in things "green" only when money for him is involved.

There is a reason why Ken Starr worked so hard to make Gore president, a decade ago.

It was not because Fat Albert was an unflinching progressive. (see Lieberman, Joe)

And Gore, today is employed as a Hedge Fund Manager. What a resume!

As a Democrat and a long-standing opponent of prostitution. I could never endorse Wall Street's Al Gore.

Al Gore's resurgence and currently blooming net worth has been created on a not so solid foundation of not so accurate information. The end justifying the means, might apply here, but the current data evidences that Global Warming ... ISN'T.

The earth's temperature may in fact be cooling slightly. If we are to set serious guidelines to clean up our mess in the air and water, we should base decisions on sound data and not emotional hype.

On Friday, Rasmussen Reports released a poll showing that among Democratic voters, Gore finished third in a three-way contest. The numbers: 42 percent for Obama, 26 percent for Clinton, 23 percent for Gore.

The headline over that finding: "Gore Not Answer to Dem Divide."

Considring Gore is wishful erroneous thinking that ain't going to happen.

Interesting that Clinton has the softer support though.

No. Why does every suggestion the entrenched elite throw out to us somehow have to do with overruling the democratically elected will of the voters? Here's an idea: follow the rules and let's get a nominee, the person who wins the most votes. Easy. Obama.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 03:40 PM on 03/30/2008

I don't think you understand the notion "brokered convention," which is easy to understand since there hasn't been one for 40 years. Obama leads in delegates/popular vote by what amounts to a hair's breath. If both candidates begin the convention with insufficient delegates to capture the nomination and if super delegates refuse to vote for either Obama or Clinton, a brokered arrangement would occur because there is no "will of the people." If the people's will were clear, we wouldn't be deadlocked. A Gore/Obama is far more plausible than a Gore/Clinton ticket owing to conflicting personalities and a keen dislike between Gore and Bill Clinton. Personally, I don't believe Gore wants to job so seeing him on top of a Democratic ticket seems like wishful thinking. Brokered arrangements have occurred before and one could happen in August.

Gore and clinton dont play nice in the sandbox. everyone know this. It is interesting how he has not come out for Obama. I guess he doesn't believe Obama's BS. Just like 75% of this country.

BUT...

While Dems infight, Republicans use MEDIA to brainwash Americans to vote for McCain. They will.

Wheres this clown Gore been?

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 03:09 PM on 03/30/2008

Listen, if Ale Gore fought a little harder, Bush may not have become president in the first place. This is no savior! My take, if the Democratice Party withers from the strong running of 2 excellent canidates, they should not have control of the presidency. That simple!

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 03:06 PM on 03/30/2008

It's tragic that Gore didn't decide to run this time. He is true presidential material, unlike Clinton and Obama.
The Democrats have winnowed the field of all the viable candidates and now the nation is left with the very likely prospect of living with another Republican presidency. (I will say though, I do not think McCain would represent a third Bush term at all.)

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 02:10 PM on 03/30/2008

this is what I see, also.

the MSM stripped the party of any viable candidates to concentrate on these 2 "token novelty" candidates as they would make for good ratings.

they did this by denying status to the others by relegating them to "2nd tier status from the get-go thereby planting the idea in the populace's minds that somehow, hillary and obama had catapulted to the front.

if you re-watch the early coverage, you will see that there was equal interest in a number of candidates until you subtley observed that for every showing of a dodd, or biden face there were 4-6 showings of obama and hillary's faces.

it just snowballed from t here and now we are left with only these 2 questionable candidates.

when there was the dust-up over pakistan during the iowa race, biden was beginning to get some traction, but he had been relegated to 2nd tier for so long by the media that there wasn't sufficient time to get his message out.

these guys just weren't "flashy" enough even though they both were better statesmen with important ideas and abilities that I think we are going to miss in the near future.

too bad so much of the democratic party is treating this very important election like a season of american idol,

it's not about who makes you feel good, but who can really get the heavy lifting done

I'd vote for Gore again- but only if he Takes Obama as his Running mate.
I voted for him when th eStole the elction in '00, But if it were between him and Obama- i'd still vote for Obama. He's the Breath of Fresh Air this Country needs- I'd rather see obama walk away from the Dem Corruption, but will wait to Unregister. I hate th eCurrent Neo Dems as much as I have hated the Neo Cons al these yrs, I have no faith (trust)in the 'dem' leaders, I only have fiath in Obama's ability to stir the masses (it's not him- it's his vision that reflects our Dreams). but I'm not voting for Gore because he's "owed' it either ( Like Hillary thinks) He has however proven his higher standards by his actions while out of DC- like Carter. Doing the RIGHT things fro Mankind- not their own ambitons, or meglomania.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 03:09 PM on 03/30/2008

Hate is an appropriate emotion when dealing with people who advocate unnecessary war (Hillary voted for Iraq) and torture (extraordinary rendition - shipping suspected terrorists to Egypt to be beaten and electro-shocked into meaningless confession - started under Clinton).

As Obama appears to be a smarter, more energetic Bush, he needs to be paired with someone who isn't a walking campaign commercial, HAS shown up to vote on issues, and has a resume longer than five sentences. Gore at the top of the ticket would be better than Obama with anyone, but Gore/Clinton the BEST choice. But the Obama drones want their product served to the entire nation. It is to be hoped Obama finds some decency in the center of his pixels & drops out. The product is still selling however, as did New Coke for a time; it is unlikely Democrats can pull back now from their choice of an image rather than a candidate.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 10:14 AM on 03/30/2008

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 04:32 PM on 03/30/2008

Gore/Clinton is not a ticket that the party would accept should Obama be ahead by

Obama stands for pretty much everything your candidate stands for in terms of policy.

He just has a little flair.

Please recognize that Hillary is not going to be on this ticket in any form, unless Obama is on the top and picks her. And every day the kitchen sink tactics come from the Hillary campaign makes that event less likely to come to pass.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 12:37 PM on 03/30/2008

This is only a ploy to prevent Obama from wining. Joe Klein, a member of Council on Foreign Relations. Democrats and Jason Horowitz, are only trying to find an alternative to Obama in the face of Hillary's losing campaign. These two are Status Quo zionists warmongers from TIME and NYT wishing a comeback from the tipes of Lieberman. But it is not going to happen, because Obama is going to win at least sufficiently. And there is no telling what would happen if people realize that AIPAC is runing the government.

Those of us that care about the future of the country require more of a presidential candidate than a repeatedly loudly-shouted 'yes, we can,' by paid campaign staff on TV.

Obama's many financial community sponsors do not now--and never did intend--for him to be president.

Obama, in his prime sponsors' view was merely the right-wing's anti-Hillary marketing gimmick.

Since they have already destroyed the GOP, with the corrupt McCain's nomination--why should the British financial community manipulators of corrupt American politics stop there?

Of course these speculators want the pliable Obama. Chicago's Barack knows which side his bread is buttered on. He cut his teeth in Chicago politics.

Just as I did. And Emil Jones before both of us. Sorry, Barry.

Barack Obama as president and Senator Jim Webb as vice president would be the dream ticket.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 01:01 AM on 03/30/2008

why would potential presidential candidate webb want to be associated with a possible obama presidency.

even if obama manages to grab the nomination and by some miracle gtes elected. his term will be a disaster, a jimmy carter re-do of stagnation as the escounced congress answers to their K-street sponsors and virtually ignores the guy in the white house,

anyone with a brain knows no one is going to stop this war for the next decade or more, we WILL NOT leave all the oil unattended.

the economy will be in a recession verging on depression and there will be NO support for any changing of the status quo in the midst of a financial disaster.

the obama followers think they are grabbing the brass ring to wealth redistribution with this guy.

why would webb want to associate himself with this?

What a shock!

The same Time magazine, that in the 1930s editorially preferred Mussolini and Hitler over FDR, now gushes over Hedge Fund Manager Al Gore.

No thanks. I am a Democrat not a fascist.

No More Gore. Time to go back to FDR.

Al Gore is very interested in things 'green'--especially green currency in his bank account.
(See election 2000.)

Bil Clinton learned too late that Gore --rhymes with Whore.

If Howard Dean had an ounce of leadership capacity, he'd quash this non-sense post haste. This is a distraction, and provides the illusion of a possible solution. Reality check: Hillary will not step aside. Not for you, me, the media, fellow senators, voters, delegates, superdelegates, or anyone else. Dean should crawl out from under his desk and show some spine.

I'm just as turned off by Obama supporters as I am with Hillary herself. Both sides are full of idiots.

I would be so happy if Gore ran.

As an Obama supporter from Day 1, I could live with a Gore-Obama ticket. I think the odds of that happening are mighty slim--but wouldn't it be deliciously ironic if it turned out that way, considering that it will be Hillary's fault if the nomination has to be negotiated at the convention. If she had any concern for the Democratic Party as anything other than a vehicle for her own ambitions, she would bow out of the race now.

I think its ridiculous to slam Gore or Edwards for not deciding "right this minute" to pick Obama or Clinton. Frankly, I'm having some trouble with the decision myself. And no, I don't think an Obama/Clinton, or Clinton/Obama ticket is going to beat McCain. I stil believe that Al Gore or alternatively John Edwards were and are the best hope for us Democrats to beat McCain, and frankly, isn't what its all about people? Sheesh.
However, I do dream about the scenario where neither Clinton or Obama get a clear majority in the first go-round at the Convention. Someone then nominates Gore, and all delegates who were committed the first go-round, now are uncommited, and overwhelmingly nominate Gore who agrees to run and selects Obama as his VP. This is my dream, wish and prayer. From anyone's lips for Gore to God's ears!!

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 02:28 PM on 03/29/2008

I'd guess that Al Gore's negative numbers among Republicans are about as high as Hillary's. Either one on the ticket would galvanize conservatives to get out the vote, thereby putting a severe dent in the number of pickups in the House and Senate. Both on the ticket? That would be a recipe for disaster for the Democratic Party and the country.
Joe Klein is not for a Democratic victory. He is for a centrist victory and, like so many of his kind, I believe that he would work to sabotage the Democrats if he sees a progressive, populist, grassroots movement taking hold.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 01:27 PM on 03/29/2008

Not a lot of diversity there: two southern white men (neither of which carried his own home state in his respective Presidential / Vice Presidential race).
