ATLANTA — An Allman Brothers Band member says Gregg Allman is unable to play several upcoming concerts because of his treatments for hepatitis C.

Drummer Butch Trucks says the band has canceled appearances in Florida next month and bowed out of its annual run of shows at Manhattan's Beacon Theatre in May.

Trucks says Allman began undergoing treatment last year.

The Allman Brothers Band was founded in Florida in the late 1960s, but gained fame while living in Macon, Ga. The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995.

Best of luck to you, Greg. Love you guys. Saw you in MD right before Duane wiped out. Man, he and Betts, twin guitars nonpareil. "In Memory of Elizabeth Reid" has always been one of my very favorite songs

Here they are in their heyday, when Duane was alive:

What a shame that he said that he cured his Hep C, because that is IMPOSSIBLE. The only way to cure Hep C is to undergo Interferon treatments and then your chances are about 50/50 to cure it. You can NOT drink alcohol if you have Hep C, it is like fuel to the fire of the virus. Hep C is the number one reason for liver transplants in America today. Hep C is NOT a disease only IV drug users get, that is another fairytale the American public is told. Anyone who had a transfusion or other blood products prior to 1990 should be tested. There have been recent outbreaks in outpatient clinics. Beware and get tested everyone.

This is true, Hep C cannot be self-cured. I was diagnosed 4 yrs. ago and have done extensive research. Also true, there are several ways the disease can be transmitted. IV drug use and blood transfusions are most commonly suspected, but anyone who has ever snorted drugs by sharing a straw or rolled up dollar bill could be infected. Another cause is improper sterilization of dental and manicure instruments. Or as simple as using someone else's toothbrush or razor. Firefighters, paramedics, nurses, EMTs, are still at great risk. Most of those infected (estimated at approx. 5 million in the U.S.) can't pinpoint the exact cause or time of exposure. Symptoms usually don't appear for 15-25 years and they can start out subtle enough that many don't seek medical help.
As for interferon treatment, I've decided against it. As Ginko stated, the best scenario is 50/50. With genotype 1, which most Americans have, the odds are less favorable. Interferon is a toxic nightmare and even if it cures the disease the ill effects can persist for the remainder of your life. A firefighter I spoke with said he never imagined it would be so horrible and he had to stop. Imagine the sickest you've ever been with the flu and having it for an entire year. It can cause depression, suicidal tendencies, anemia, heart and/or lung damage, suppress the immune system, etc.
More research is desperately needed to find a better treatment.
