Obama On View

Barack Obama appears on "The View" today (taped yesterday), and below we present a chunk of the highlights of the interview:

  • When Obama claims that his distant-cousin Brad Pitt got the better looking side of the gene pool, Barbara declares, "We thought you were very sexy looking"
  • Obama tells Joy that he can withstand the Republican attack machine: "I'm skinny but I'm tough," he says
  • Obama discusses Rev. Jeremiah Wright: "Had the Reverend not retired...then I wouldn't have felt comfortable staying there at the church"

    Watch:

Here's more about his pastor/mentor, Jeremiah Wright and the primary season:

Oh dear,

I know you Clintonians are going to be ticked that Obama's 'hotness' will probably be the big story of the day rather than the Rev.

That damn fickle media just won't get back on script.

What is it with video clips from the View? I can't ever HEAR them! I don't have this problem with any one else's clips---what's up with that?

Maybe your ears aren't attuned to the Banality frequency. Just a couple of minutes of those ladies makes my ears bleed.

I've never considered Obama "sexy" but his charisma and honesty is what made me cross party lines for the first time in 30 years. I completely believe in him and feel that he is the only chance this country has to getting us back on track.

Janet, thank you from the bottom of my heart - you sound like you really thought this out and apparently did your research. Since we cannot rely on the mainstream media to give us "facts", we have to research each candidate for ourselves. Like you, I believe to my core being, that he is the ONLY chance this country has for getting us back on track in the global world and for actually helping "we the people". He just makes me feel as though I really am one of "we the people" and no one else in my 65 years has ever made me feel that way. That is one of his rare qualities. Thanks again Janet and welcome aboard!!!

I'm undecided so help me? ...How about starting by giving me a list of his accomplishments? How about telling me the number of hispanics he has on his staff and in his offices in comparison to the percentage of hispanics who live in Illinois and are citizens/registered voters? Fair enough?

As for the second question, I've never categorized people so I really don't know but I"m hispanic and he's got my vote. I don't think race should have anything to do with picking a president.

lol Your questions appear to give your "undecided" status a serious blow. How can you expect a grass root supporter to know specifics about a national campaign? As far as accomplishments. I would consider striving passionately and intelligently through one of the nation's finest institutions; becoming head of its law review; forsaking a corporate lifestyle for service on the streets of Chicago; teaching Constitutional law at the University of Chicago; successfully writing 2 engaging; successful books; entering into politics to represent the disadvantaged and work on immigration reform, governmental transparency, and lobbyist ethics; not to mention that he has 2 beautiful daughters and from all accounts a very loving marriage; all accomplishments. As an individual Senator Obama is extremely accomplished. Politically yes he is younger than his opponent but has worked on important legislation as I have stated above, just remember if we were voting based only on political accomplishments/experience we would be electing Senators Joe Biden or Chris Dodd, or Governor Bill Richardson.

Well a list of his earmarks on his website 99% of which are honorable and just causes, and even the tiny few that raise questions are only because he happens to live in the state and you can't do that without being associated with the odd good project.

Not sure about your obsession with hiring hispanics but Richardson seems to think he's got a deep and accurate understanding of the wishes of hispanics.

Short list in the U.S. Senate (not all of them and including none of his attempts)
Coburn-Obama -- transparency in govt. this allows you to google search how every taxpayer dollar is spent.
Lugar-Obama -- protecting the Country from loose nuclear weapons
Ethics & Lobbying reform (you probably heard about this one).

I don't know all of the folks Senator Obama has in his campaign. I don't know who he will appoint to his cabinet. I do know that all of the best and the brightest will flock to him (of every nationality) because his Presidency will be one for the history books. This would also be true for Senator Clinton's presidency, but there would be some who would refrain (especially qualified republicans).

While I generally dispise The View you have to admit they're americans and they're voters and so they have a right to be part of the discussion.

Does Obama still belong to that church? Even though Wright may have retired, the new pastor is a firebrand too with a whole lot of years left in him. Will he be leaving upon the first hint of Wrightheadedness?

Something like saying Wright was lynched or that NPR is a Republican front. OOPS. Yeah. I think Otis Moss has it in him.

I would love for Sen. Obama to give a press conference with real reporters and answer people's questions about Wright. Going on the "View" which is not exactly a bastion of intellectual powerhouses (remember Sheri Shepard's comment about thinking the earth is flat?), is not the way to do it. If we are to believe him that he was so outraged by Reverend Wright's statements last year that he was going to leave the church, they how come he then put Reverend Wright on his campaign staff as a religious advisor (if he was so offended)? How come he would want to stay in a church, where many in the congregation felt comfortable cheering for anti-American, anti-Israel, anti-white and other distateful remarks? How come he would want to stay in a church, for the past year while Pastor Wright made racist remarks against the Clintons? How come he would want to stay in a church that put pro-Hamas/anti-Israel articles in it's church newsletter? How come he sat in this hateful church for 20 years and still hasn't adequately distanced himself from this organization/pastor? Many would like to hear the answers to these questions. If he doesn't address these valid questions adequately, I fear it will torpedo him in the general election should he be our candidate. Just wait until the Republicans start running there swift-boat styled ads with this guy. They are masters at winning elections with far less than this.

Rather than listening to comments about his looks, it would have been my preference to hear more about his thoughtful, reflective reasoning abilities, and his approach to problem-solving.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 01:59 PM on 03/28/2008

What a crock full of BS saying he's not aware of those stuff Wright said being his pastor for 20 years. And people are actually falling for it. I can't even stand listening to him anymore. God forbids if he becomes the next president with Wright as his spiritual advisor. :shudder:

I worry about it because he's no white. I DO NOT AGREE but I think some white folks might need a white guy on the ticket to swing their vote to Obama. I hope I'm wrong. Because if it were a black guy and a hispanic guy I would be very very happy.

As much as I admire Senator Obama, I can't condone the way he attempts to dodge the mainstream media. Appearances on friendly venues such as "The View", "Ellen", "Oprah", any (hardly mainstream or even viewed) MSNBC forum, or any (patently biased) MTV thinly veiled campaign adjunct may sway some non-critical voters, but will never get to the meat of any really uncomfortable issues; and as such will always be suspect of simply providing him another media "mouthpiece". I'd be more impressed if he did an hour with a panel from Fox, just as Senator Clinton has subjected herself to! In the general election, after he presumably wins the nomination of our party, he will be upstaged completely by Senator McCain if he continues this tact; it is well known that McCain always allows the media (both mainstream as well as non-traditional) ready access.

Ideas and experience, not emotion, should guide us to our nominee in the end. As we are fond of saying in the engineering business; let the numbers be your guide, because it's a well known fact that figures never lie, but liars figure.......

Yeah...McCain is old enough to remember to make the Mainstream Media your friend...so when he pulls off an "Old Uncle Albert" routine in his speeches...the MSM won't make fun of him on the Network News. And the McCain Suck Up Watch Continues --

RocketmanBob was including them as a "friendly" venue. You only have to hear Matthews talk about the tingle he gets up his leg when he hears Obama speak, and hear Keith's rantings about how evil Hillary is to know that these are certainly very friendly venues for Obama.

Obama was on Hardball, Anderson Cooper 360 AND Larry King last week- he was also on the Keith Oberman show the week before- I believe that the clips for all of these appearances are on youtube- check them out, the Larry King interview was particularly informative.

And I'm sorry but Clinton CAN agree to go on Fox now because Republicans want her to win (Remember the request put out by Rush Limbaug's to Republicans in TX and Ohio to vote for her- and it worked CNN reported that 100,000 Republicans in both primaries crossed party lines to vote for her)- mark my words though, if she were to win the nomination (extremely unlikely & virtually mathematically impossible) then she and they would be singing a different tune.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:17 PM on 03/28/2008

Is Fox still considered a news channel? I've always viewed it as a lifestyle network, just like the ones you say he's been on (only for the Rebublican set). And yet he has been on Fox: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=79JbkOG31sA On Hannity no less, and we all know what a pillar of objectivity he is.

Figures may never lie, but many a good statistician will tell you the myriad ways in which they can be used.

It's not about his looks, it's about his intelligence and how he plans to use it to better America. The piece of work we have in there now can care less about the struggling economy. The people who voted for Bush both times, and who will vote for McCain are idiotic want things to stay the same-food and gas prices through the roof. Maybe this is the repugs way of controlling America's obesity problem..less food, no gas for cars so we'll have to walk everywhere! Oh, I forgot they aren't that smart!

We have differences, true. However, it is time to put those differences and anger aside and get behind a candidate to unite this party, McCain launched his first GE commercial today, but yest we are still bickering over words by a man who isn't running for President!! It's time to put your immaturities aside, and act like grown people, who are facing grown people issues. We cannot afford another 4 years of a republican regime.

Come on guys lighten up. The View is the View. It's not the World Affairs Council or the Brookings Institution.
Politicians go on the Daily Show, the Tonight Show SNL etc. It's another way to get exposed to the public --in some cases to people who never watch the news.

And the fact is they made some very valid points and questions such as surviving the attack machine and the Wright issue. I can't believe I'm praising The View here but they took a much more useful approach than SNL. Voters are citizens and you can't marginalize them because of what show they watch.
