Peggy Noonan: At This Point You Either Understand The Problem With Hillary Or You Don't

Wall Street Journal   |  PEGGY NOONAN   |   March 28, 2008 04:12 PM

I think we've reached a signal point in the campaign. This is the point where, with Hillary Clinton, either you get it or you don't. There's no dodging now. You either understand the problem with her candidacy, or you don't. You either understand who she is, or not. And if you don't, after 16 years of watching Clintonian dramas, you probably never will.

That's what the Bosnia story was about. Her fictions about dodging bullets on the tarmac -- and we have to hope they were lies, because if they weren't, if she thought what she was saying was true, we are in worse trouble than we thought -- either confirmed what you already knew (she lies as a matter of strategy, or, as William Safire said in 1996, by nature) or revealed in an unforgettable way (videotape! Smiling girl in pigtails offering flowers!) what you feared (that she lies more than is humanly usual, even politically usual).

Ms. Noonan will be serving hors d'oeuvres in the GOP lounge... right after the oil crew wipes her down.

Look up "obsequious". You'll find a picture of Peg.

O'bots, this is the apologist-laureate who helped feed you all those neocon lies on doilies, with her overworked diction and above-it-all affect. Look up "Stockholm Syndrome", and be careful picking new friends while you're in a delirious stupor.

I think everybody gets it. Some don't care - Carville admirers for instance. For most I think it's just blatant fear or racism - it's hard to believe anyone with any regard for integrtiy could still think she deserves to be president, regardless of whether she would be a good one or not. Even if she were the best choice, which she isn't, she is too vicious to deserve it - and so's her daughter. And I used to like Bill in spite of myself - that's so over.

I think the Peggy Noonans and the Arianna Huffingtons and even the little Billy Kristols of the world KNOW that Senator Clinton will mop the floor with McCain or any other candidate they want to put up. The "Noonan Republicans" have decided they would rather run against Senator Obama and they will do anything to get Senator Clinton out of the way. No matter which democratic candidate wins, the Republicans will make the general campaign as ugly as possible. Their candidate is a loser, and the rest of their slate at both the state and federal level stands to be trounced this year. Senator Clinton is someone we can win with. Senator Obama might be someone we can win with. Lets stop the hateful, silly bickering and get on with electing democrats. I predict this will happen despite the stupid actions of Howie Dean.

Hillary Clinton has used ruthless tactics, has remembered things that didn't happen and has nevertheless consistently lost to Obama, yet her older female supporters regard the idea that she might not win the Democratic nomination as some kind of unspecified outrage. They seem to be seeking a coronation, not a nomination.

What are you Obamaniacs afraid of? That Obama can't close the deal? Is he such a wimp that he can't take the punches thrown by his own party members? Your arguments are straight out of his strategy sessions, and that act is so tired. Can the man unite the country when he can't even unite our party? Coronation? You must be kidding. Do you really believe that Hillary Clinton thought she would sail to the White House without the least bit of resistance? Wipe that Kool-Aid off your lips and snap out of it.

Was Ms. Noonan as outraged when her imagined lover/mentor/the Giver of all Things Ronald Reagan "imagined" he really fought the Nazis in WWII? He simply "misspoke" and confused the Warners Brothers soundstage with the European Front. Easy enough to do, I guess. And, BTW, there is no conceivable way that Noonan will support anybody but McCain in the General Election. Obama is way too liberal. And she hates Clinton, although a Clinton presidency would keep her in business for a few more years.

(Republican Peggy Noonan said) "You either understand the problem with her candidacy, or you don't. "
Dear Ms Noonan,
I get it... Hillary is fighting for what she believes in... Stacked against her is:
Barack Obama: "I believe that words that degrade individuals have no place in our public dialogue, whether it's on the campaign stump or in the pulpit." Obama stands on his Pedestal, while his supporters, such as MSNBC, Huff Post, Democrat Old Guard and other supporters do the trashing, bashing, spinning and attacking... Pretty much add the MSM to that Barack support... I agree, Barack rarely goes Negative... Others do the JOB for him... Unfair, yeppers... Politics as usual, yeppers!
Prior to the Barack/ Hillary Contest, we had a Former President Clinton welcomed around the World... Also, a Former First Lady/ N Y Senator... How did the Clinton's become the "Billaries", vile, liars, racists, etc... They didn't... That is coming from the minds of the Barack supporters...
Amazing how Barack is still on his Pedestal... Yet the Campaign against the Clinton's and supporters is VERY Negative... And the Republicans have barely chimed in... The Clinton's and supporters even get the "blame" for the Negative attacks on them...
Amazing, Barack supporters do NOT agree, or Believe in what he claims to stand for... But (wink-wink) apparently by his silence, neither does he...

Reagan served in the Army Air Force during WWII making training films for pilots. Part of his mission involved classified material such as simulations of planned bombing runs. In his capacity of providing this training he also had access to classified material about the enemy and became aware, earlier than most Americans, of the full horrors of the Nazi concentration camps. His wartime experiences are recounted in his memoir "An American Life."
As to why he served states-side, Pres. Reagan was profoundly near-sighted. He was already an Army Reserve Officer when WWII began having enlisted in 1937. At that time he was a cavalry officer. Reagan gave as his reason for enlisting his desire to learn riding. He had a lifetime love of horses. At the time, he was still in Hollywood. After the US entered the war, he like many other Hollywood actors, was called into active duty.
I don't know what Noonan's purported outrage consisted of, but Reagan served the military admirably during WWII and finished the war at the rank of Captain.

The thing is, when you decide to go nasty you have to knock your opponent out immediately or people begin to get really sickened by how nasty you are being.

So for example in South Carolina in 2000 Bush (Rove) did some things that were beyond the pale, like push polls and suggesting that John McCain had an illegitimate black daughter or was mentally unbalanced from his time as a POW. McCain got whacked and never really recovered his momentum.

Hillary 'threw the kitchen sink' with the 'commander in chief test', the '3AM call commercial' having Geraldine Ferraro play to the bigot vote with the language of black privlidge and finally by pushing the Rev Wright story. But while it gave her narrow vote wins in Ohio and Texas (but only slightly narrowed the delegate gap) it did not knock Obama out, and as it continued, or threatened to continue, people began seeing her giving the election to McCain (some even suggested intentionally). Meanwhile Hillary felt that she had to keep the volume up so thus came the tales of wartime heroics.

(Part of the reason why it worked for Bush in 2000 in South Carolina and not for Clinton in 2008 is that Clinton's campaign SAID that they were going to throw the kitchen sink, so when it happened folks said 'oh, so this is what the kitchen sink looks like')

There came a time in my life-- maybe in my thirty-somethings-- when I began to notice a pattern
in the stories I chose to share with others. I exaggerated. When I saw a 3-foot barracuda hanging around in the canal behind my Key West home, that barracuda grew to 5 feet when I passed the story along to friends. I did this often enough to start asking myself "why". Today I figure that I considered myself so boring that in order to get anything I said across to others, I had to "trifle with the truth". The plain, unadulterated story, by itself, just didn't cut it.
Maybe this is where Hillary is coming from-- it's at least a possibility. But I don't want my President creating fairy tales for mass consumption and ulterior motives. You see, I KNEW I was lying; I imagine that Hillary does too. And "I'm tired, I misspoke" doesn't cut it with me.

Ms Noonan is right on again. She put in writing what most democrats fear/know. She and Bill are "has beens"...and have lost the respect of the voters. The Bosnia thing is one of many lies about her history. The woman has a problem and its coming to light. The main stream media who have had a lovefest with the Clintons of the 1990s are shellshocked. A year ago many thought the race was over and Hillary had it locked up. And at this stage with problems all around her Noonan has it right....Hillary doesn't have a clue what to do and cannot admit defeat. So she drags on the battle which is just bringing the democrats into a foolish internal war that will destroy them. McCain has it made.

"Sort of crazy." That sums it up, all right. Bottom line: I don't want any more presidents who are driven entirely by their own neurotic needs. Barack Obama seems to have fewer emotional problems than any candidate I have seen in a long time. He is qualified for the job, and he is not crazy. We ought to make all candidates take a psych exam, but then that would eliminate the fun of watching loons like George W. Bush and Hillary Clinton (and Bill) and John McCain in action. These people do not have our interests at heart. How can they? Their whole being is tied up in proving that they are what they think they are--something we can all see they are not. Can we have a SANE president? Just for a change of pace?

Peggy Noonan has been wrong practically every other time, but with the concatenation of events, statements, and independent observations concerning Hillary Clinton, I'll have to go with Noonan on her current assessment of "Mrs. Clinton."

Illusions of grandeur, faking it, lying, cheating, pointing those accusatory fingers. If you or I behaved that way we'd be put in an institution. Not very presidential, hu?

They have all the money in the world.
They're not transparent as to how they got it, oh by the way has she opened up her docs yet for the world to see???

Bill and Hill, buy a farm and just plant some vegetables. Could be very pacifying.

When we die, and we ALL do eventually - we come naked to this world and we leave it naked. When will they realize that they can't take it with them..

Who gives a flip what that Republican hag thinks? At this point, either you understand the problem with Republican women, or you don't.
