Newsweek: Hillary For NY Governor?

Some Democrats terrified that their bloody primary campaign will doom them in November are floating a consolation prize for Hillary Clinton: governor of New York.

The travails of New York Gov. David Paterson have opened up a new potential career path for Clinton, according to well-informed Democratic Party insiders who refused to allow their names to be used when discussing contingencies. They want her to consider the option if she concludes after the April 22 Pennsylvania primary that she cannot overtake Barack Obama for the party's presidential nomination. Hillary Clinton, while fully committed to continuing her presidential campaign, was said to be open to discussing the idea, while Bill Clinton rejected it out of hand.

Why is it HRC supporters keep saying "let the last 10 primaries play out"? You have got to know as well as I do it won't make a difference--and I live in one of those 10 states (Oregon). Hillary will, at most, win 3 of those last 10. She'll take Pennsylvania by 6-8, she'll take Puerto Rico. She may or may not take West Virginia, but I'll give her the benefit of the doubt--it'll be close though.

Meanwhile, she's gonna lose North Carolina, Oregon, South Dakota, and Kentucky by double digits. And she's gonna lose the rest *at least* by single digits.

So what exactly will the last 10 prove?

I don't expect HRC to stay in the Senate if she loses the nomination.

Being Governor would make her a stronger candidate in 2012 in some people's minds.

OTOH, there are lots of other people who want to be Governor of New York, so she may have strong competition, and even on the D side. She won't be able to strongarm everyone into stepping aside for her as she did with the Senate seat in 2000.

Obama won't beat McCain because he no plan to unify the Democratic Party he's nominated. Other than calling Hillary's supporters a bunch of losers and telling them to lump it if they don't like it, what's Obama's plan to unify the party? I'm not buying the "change" and "inspiration" crappola. If not Hillary, then McCain is "likeable enough."

The only way Hillary can save herself politically if its Obama vs. McCain is to make an all out effort to help Obama win. Otherwise she will rightfully be blamed for Obama's defeat and will be a Pariah in the Democratic Party and will never be elected for anything else.
