Newsweek:

Some Democrats terrified that their bloody primary campaign will doom them in November are floating a consolation prize for Hillary Clinton: governor of New York.

The travails of New York Gov. David Paterson have opened up a new potential career path for Clinton, according to well-informed Democratic Party insiders who refused to allow their names to be used when discussing contingencies. They want her to consider the option if she concludes after the April 22 Pennsylvania primary that she cannot overtake Barack Obama for the party's presidential nomination. Hillary Clinton, while fully committed to continuing her presidential campaign, was said to be open to discussing the idea, while Bill Clinton rejected it out of hand.

"Clinton believes that Barack Obama may well lose this year to John McCain"

If Obama loses to McCain, Hillary will rightfully be blamed for this. After that she will be a Pariah in the Democratic party and will not even be able to be elected dog catcher.

This is the most ridiculous Clinton argument of all.

Of course she "believes" that. Obama is her opponent.

The notion that Clinton is bravely soldiering on for the Good Of America is just so arrogant and deluded it's unspeakable.

She can't even kneecap honestly. She has to affect some Noble Cause.

It's baloney.

Oh, for God's sake, don't "be mean" to the Clintons.

We'll ALL pay.

They're always treated SO UNFAIRLY.

That will never happen I believe most New Yorkers has "lost that lovin feelin" for Hillary, especially after the Bosnia lie. Besides Paterson will run again and win, he'll surprise the naysayers and be the best Governor New York has ever had.

You certainly have written a lot there that is heavy on fancy and incredibly light on fact. I have to wonder just how little it takes to make you utter the phrase "I believe" !

I do hope the people of New York are wise enough to see through Hillary Clinton.

What about FDR, Harriman, Cuomo, and Rockefeller they were good Governors. He has a ways to go before becoming the best ever.

This poor country.

We've gone from worrying about President Clinton's bruised ego to worrying about President Bush's bruised ego to worrying about Hillary Clinton's bruised ego. Occasionally we're asked to pity "poor Chelsea", I have no idea why.

Our celebrity leaders, and their self-absorbed baby boomer soap-opera lives.

What a bore.

Who cares what the Clintons are "feeling"? When did these two get the idea they were owed something by the citizens they ostensibly serve?

No one notice that the senators that want her to step aside are ALL Obama supporters? She has a lot of supporters and she owes them her best try at it.

It's called democracy - do those wanting her to step aside not believe in democracy?

Hey, how about VP? It's been done before when 2 candidates have had a nasty race - Reagan/Bush Sr. - Kennedy/Johnson.

Considering how close the race is - is Obama man enough to offer it to her?

Great idea. Replace two cheating politician with a new election between Hillary who's husband is a serial cheat and Giuliani who also cheated. That will teach them

It's a good idea, a free house and expense account on the taxpayers of NY, works for me. (Jerseygirl)

But I think Rudy would beat her hands down.

She would be at risk of falling into Richard Nixon's predicament when he ran for governor of California after losing the presidency in 1960, one defeat on the heels of another, but unlike Nixon, Clinton would not be able or willing to serve out years in the wilderness before trying again.

One other comment: I read Jonathan Alter's piece and have to laugh at how the Clintons and their surrogates like Carville are gaily throwing around the term "traitor" at anyone who doesn't support her. In the first place, the Clintons are assuming that all those senators and other politicians owed her the nomination and by choosing someone else are therefore traitors. It's especially egregious to label John Kerry a traitor after they held back during his presidential run.

The reason why Joe Lieberman has betrayed the Democratic Party and why Zell Miller trashed the party is there are no consequences for being a party traitor. This would just be a reward. What's really disturbing is there will be an election 2 years from now in NY for governor--not a person appointed. Who's to say NYers want Hillary after this? Gov. Paterson would have had 2 years to woo NYers or is this assuming they swap positions? hmm. But still voters are the ones who will decide. On a national level, I hope Americans don't reward Hillary for all the dirty tactics she's played. It's time to rally around Obama. Let Hillary go back to the Senate.
