Elizabeth Edwards, the wife of former Democratic presidential contender John Edwards, said she and John McCain have one thing in common: "Neither one of us would be covered by his health policy."

Edwards lodged her criticism of the presumptive Republican presidential nominee's proposal Saturday at the annual meeting of the Assn. of Health Care Journalists.

Under McCain's plan, insurance companies "wouldn't have to cover preexisting conditions like melanoma and breast cancer," she said.

McCain has been treated for melanoma, the most serious type of skin malignancy. Edwards in 2004 was diagnosed with breast cancer, and announced a year ago that it had returned and spread into her bones, meaning it no longer could be cured.

McCain's plan focuses on offering new tax breaks for individuals who buy their own health insurance. But critics say the Arizona senator's proposal avoids giving insurers requirements on whom they must cover and how much they may charge.

His plan would make it difficult for people with preexisting conditions, but who aren't covered by a government- or job-sponsored plan, to buy individual coverage, Edwards said.

Cancer survivors are routinely denied insurance when they try to purchase it as individuals, health experts say.

Hillary's campaign is not paying the bills of the many small businesses that worked for her campaign in Ohio. Also out today, they have not been paying health insurance premiums for their staff. And this is the person who is going to mandate healthcare for all and a robust economy? Pay your bills first, Hillary, or travel coach like Huckabee if you don't want to use any more of your own money.

There is nothing worst that having a loved one diagnosed with a terminal illness. The overpowering sense of fear and helplessness is paralyzing. At such a critical point in the life of the patient and the family members, having to consider if they can afford the treatment to cure or possibly stem the illness, should not be a factor. They should be able to concentrate on the variety of treatments available or just simply surviving the illness and not worry if they can afford it.
I wonder how many Americans have foregone treatment for the simply reason that they did not have health insurance and either could not get the financial backing or did not wish to leave a debt to their loved ones.

As a single, previously self-employed person who has spent the last year going through "Killer" Chemo, Bi-lateral Lung Biopsies (to verify whether it had spread-not), Limb-sparing Surgery and then Radiation, I wonder why no one discusses the cost of not having an income during treatment. I was fortunate to have Insurance (paid out $200,000+ so far), with a deductable of $3500, along with a premium of $3500, plus paying for things that Insurance didn't cover, yet I need to sell my house before I completely drown in debt. Unfortunately, the foreclosure crisis makes that difficult even for those who have so far paid all their Bills.

First of all, I am truly sorry to hear of your battle with cancer. The treatment you describe must have been unbearable. Hopefully, your prognosis is good.

Truth be told, I did not take into consideration unemployment due to such a catastrophic illness. You need to contact an advocacy group or negotiate with the hospital to work out a payment plan, according to your finances, before deciding to sell your house.

In Florida, they can take you to court and have a civil judgment against you, but as long as you pay (even a minimum payment plan in the amount of a dollar) and show you are acting in good faith, they cannot touch your domicile.

Look into it for your sake. You"ve been through enough.

The Edwards's would not be covered under the McCain plan because they are multi-millionaires and are expected to have enough sense to buy some insurance.

Thank goodness at least someone in the Democratic Party who has a voice is speaking out against McCain! Too much is at stake in this election, and all the bickering and infighting within the party has taken the proverbial eye off the prize.

Now we see why Edwards has not endorsed Obama. There is a policy difference on the healthcare issue. That's understandable, and whoever he endorses, when he comes around to it, good for her or him. Obama can't win them all. We can at least be happy in the fact that he has NOT endorsed Hillary even though he and Elizabeth like Hillary's healthcare plan better.

And because Hillary's campaign's staff health premiums were not paid for the last two months. And they are also not paying all those small businesses in Ohio that are owed money. John and Elizabeth, you want to fight for the little guy. Here is your chance. Make sure all these people get paid.

if we cannot make money off the sick and needy what good is capitalism. this is a me me society after decades of conditioning as to the benefits of capitalism.

here is the kicker. privatization of our health care system will bankrupt america. maybe then we will detune our war mongering machine but dont dont count on it americans think it is t heir right to police the world and be the big dog on the planet.

those people losing their homes over medical bills well guarantee you when they had insurance and were covered and then approach them for universal health care they would have run you out of their homes. only when it hits them do they awaken.

the rest of the industrialized world looks in amazment at our ignorance when it comes to health care. give the ama credit brainwashing works and lobbyist work in wash. when the ama says jump members of congress say how high.

McCain's chances for a full recovery are still low. Beware more of his Veep choice -- like Romney who will be Mr. Corporate give-away. As this is the biggest social issue in the country it is refreshing to hear Mrs. Edwards back Clinton's paln.

I think that John Edwards should announce that he might endorse whichever candidates' followers will vow to vote for the winning Democratic candidate in greater numbers. The current 12% and 12% respective refusal rates are just plain scary. That will give those dedicated Clinton and Obama followers something to think about.

romeny has actually gotten universal healthcare done, unlike the liberals who just like using it as a talking point, romney achieved what clinton and edwards failed at.

hopelessobama,
Yes, but under the MA plans, people who can't afford healthcare are being fined and finding themselves in MORE debt. Is that really a cure to what ails them?
