ALTOONA, Pa. — While Democrats increasingly worry about winning ugly, Barack Obama was losing gracefully at a bowling lane in this central Pennsylvania city. He had better luck Sunday during a visit to a dairy farm, winning over a month-old calf with a fresh bottle of milk.

"My economic plan is better than my bowling," Obama told fellow bowlers Saturday evening at the Pleasant Valley Recreation Center.

"It has to be," a man called out.

Obama dropped by the bowling lanes as part of his new emphasis on low-key, face-to-face campaigning during a six-day bus tour through the state. So for two days, he scaled back the big, raucous rallies that have been his calling card.

The Illinois senator said he wanted to "take time for the retail politics that I enjoy and think helps people know me better. ... We'll probably save the rallies toward the end of the campaign."

Sunday morning, Obama visited a dairy farm run by Penn State, where he fed a bottle of milk to a slurping, gulping calf.

Obama laughed as the calf tugged hard on the nipple of the bottle, eventually draining it.

A large crowd later expected later Sunday for a campaign rally at Penn State.

The night before, it was Obama Bowl-a-Rama.

And it was clear from the start of the evening that Obama was way out of his league, certainly any bowling league.

Pennsylvania's April 22 primary is the next contest between Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton in their fight for the Democratic presidential nomination. Pennsylvania is the biggest single delegate prize remaining in the Democratic primaries.

Some Democrats worry the hard-fought, drawn-out race is already hurting the party's chances to win in November and Republicans hope they're right.

"I think it's a good competition, but I think the Democratic party is going to be blown apart," said Mark Irvin, a 49-year-old Republican who was bowling at the same time as Obama.

Obama let everyone know he hadn't bowled since Jimmy Carter was president.

He shared a lane with Pennsylvania Sen. Bob Casey Jr., who endorsed him Friday, and local homemaker Roxanne Hart. As the game went on, several small children bowled with Obama as well.

Obama and Casey had a private game of basketball earlier in the day, but they saved their F-game for the public at the bowling lanes.

On his first warm-up ball, Casey rolled a gutter ball. Obama's first ball flew well off his hand but also ended up in the gutter. On his second try, he knocked down four pins.

About five lanes over, a young man in a T-shirt that said "Beer Hunter" fell on his backside while bowling and still recorded a strike.

The crowd of regulars pressed in to take pictures, get autographs and rib him on his poor skills.

Obama did improve, nearly getting a strike in one frame, and in the seventh, picking up a spare, giving him a score of 37. Casey had a score of 71 after getting a strike, and Hart, with one less frame, racked up a score of 82.

"I was terrible," Obama laughed as he shook hands with a crowd that had gathered outside the building once word spread he was there.

Asked about his game, Hart sounded like a politician, saying: "He has potential."

MSNBC with Howard Feinman told the viewers that Obama should stick to basketball. Now that's classy.

Wearing a tie to bowl????

Wearing dress clothes to bowl???

Talk about being out of touch with the common person.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 12:33 AM on 04/01/2008

Obama bowled a 37. Hah, hah, hah, hah, hah, hah, hah, hah, hah, hah....

Gutter ball after gutter ball. His campaign is going in the gutter. What a loser.

Well, I was a terrible bowler, but when I came up against someone I really, really, really wanted to beat, I became a GREAT bowler!

Obama has been too busy in his life to spend time bowling, but I'll bet he could overcome any opponent if he wanted to do it.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 03:40 PM on 03/31/2008

I posted a fundraising page for Obama supporters to give $37 or an amount ending with 37 cents in honor of his bowling score. http://my.barackobama.com/page/outreach/view/main/democrattotheend

As a fellow left-hander I'm very worried about Obama -- wearing a watch on his left wrist (see photo). Also doesn't he ever dress down? Where's the bowling shirt or the blue collar?

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 10:05 AM on 03/31/2008

all i hear are personal attacks to obama....not any real facts.....knocking the fact that hes bowling with townies.....so ignorant.....in this country its all about putting what you feel is past you away, and trying something different...thats how unity works.....its evident that personal reasons are what thrive you people from liking him....or maybe its the fact that hes black.....hmmmm

If Obama wins Pennsylvania, will Clinton concede?

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 03:44 AM on 03/31/2008

Obama is going to be handed his backside in PA.

Then Obama can drop out of the race.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 12:39 AM on 04/01/2008

Obama is going to get crushed in PA.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 08:10 AM on 03/31/2008

Ditto.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 09:26 AM on 03/31/2008

I would NEVER vote for someone who tried to hit me with a bowling ball! What's wrong with those people in PA anyway???

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 01:57 AM on 03/31/2008

Hey Obama, I know one thing I can beat you at. You wanna go bowling? lol

I think you are doing the right thing. Keep up the retail politics. I believe it would yeild a great deal of dividends down the road.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 11:51 PM on 03/30/2008

I wish I knew I could. A few years ago, sure. Once in Virgina I warmed up and got to like 185 or so. I supposedly got MS now. I can't even walk a straight line.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 11:11 AM on 03/31/2008

I am sorry to hear that. I certainly hope you are able to cope much better than you are today. I don't know what to say.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 01:33 PM on 03/31/2008

The first time I ever bowled, I bowled my age 14. The boys from my neighborhood laughed at me all the way home.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 11:46 PM on 03/30/2008

Obama's attempts to get down with the blue collar people--what a joke! And there he was in a sports bar sipping beer with the PA guys and hallalujah, he was Jesus in a barn feeding a cow. He looked SO out of place among the people of central PA despite his attempts to be George-Bush-have-a-beer-with-me kinda guy. PA people are not stupid: they know that Obama has totally ignored the state and now wants to get jiggy with the working class on a single afternoon of appearances.

If I want inspiration, I'll put on a Marvin Gaye record.

Obama pretending to like bowling and beer doesn't do it for me.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 11:31 PM on 03/30/2008

Obama's just trying to connect with people individually and what's wrong with a politician trying to connect with people? Before I knew anything about Obama I was a Hillary supporter, but when Obama came to my little town in Iowa ( a town so small that if you blink you'll miss it ) he won me over. I couldn't believe that a presidential candidate would go out of their way to do a speech, shake hands and actually talk with the people of such a small town but Obama did (and continues to do so in other small towns). I think he feels most comfortable in smaller groups and from a voter point of view I have nothing but respect for him ever since he took some time a few months back to show some respect to my little town in Iowa.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 08:12 AM on 03/31/2008

Well think what you want, he came to Altoona which has not seen a presidential candidate since Harry Truman and made a big impression. Visited a local restaurant then went bowling and made the front page of Sundays paper. Then followed that up with 22,000 at Penn State. Remember the more hes in a state the better he does. I believe hes more a beer drinker than Hillary has tried to show. 20 years of first lady and senator I hardly think she some honky tonk regular.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 03:48 AM on 03/31/2008

I can't beleive people are so hostile they would diss him for bowling with the people.

How the frak do you know he doesn't like bowling and beer? Do you know him personally or are you just jumping to the conclusion that best enables your sour grapes?

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 12:56 AM on 03/31/2008

They guy bowled a 37. I have seen 10yo kids that never bowled in their life score higher than that. Obama can't be too coordinated to bowl a 37. That had to be totally embarrassing. Bowling a 100 is totally embarrassing but he had a 37. That is averaging less than four pins a frame. An average coordinated man should be able to throw the ball down the middle of the lane and score higher than that! I'm not voting for the uncoordinated SOB!

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 06:27 AM on 03/31/2008

If you haven't gone in 20 years, how do you think you'd do? I did 4 games years ago and after like a 100 (or less) and a 120, I got a 185, then got too tired to do it again. One game? It's something that he had a strike and a spare and got only 37. Sounds pretty rusty.

How 'bout if you hadn't been skiing in 20 yrs. Wouldn't you look a little uncomfortable?

Cut the guy some slack. You'd prefer he practice like Commander Codpiece?

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 11:16 AM on 03/31/2008

I remember my first game was a 34, It takes a few games to figure out where the ball is going to go. He should have practiced first with the bumpers on.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 08:33 AM on 03/31/2008

So? He's not good at gutter sports.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 08:04 AM on 03/31/2008

He's trying to win. Go Obama! He'll get big points for putting himself out there.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 11:48 PM on 03/30/2008

He's not going to get any points. He's going to get crushed.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 08:13 AM on 03/31/2008

polish,
Yes, and if I remember well, your group used to be treated like our group at one point *hint, hint*

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 08:29 AM on 03/31/2008

What do you mean "your group". I didn't know being an American was considered a group. And he's still going to get crushed. He has no solutions. Pennsylvanians have real problems with infrastructure in some of the biggest cites and Mr. Bowling doesn't have solutions for those problems. He thinks if you hang out with someone it makes you the best candidate.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 10:59 AM on 03/31/2008

YOU'RE SO HATEFUL, IT'S PITIFUL

OBAMA 08

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 01:58 PM on 03/31/2008

It's good he doesn't take himself too seriously. This could have been his wind surfing or tank moment.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 11:23 PM on 03/30/2008

YES I think someone who can laugh at himself, is very PROMISING, GOBAMA

OBAMA 08

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 02:00 PM on 03/31/2008

Did you see his form? If that appears on TV or You-Tube enough times, it will be a Snoopy in the tank moment. Whoever advised him to do this had obviously never seen him bowl. Yikes! The sentence that used the word "gracefully" was more apt than the writer perhaps intended.

it takes one hell of a man to be able to make fun of himself. He has more self-esteem in his little finger than the majority of people that post on this website has in their entire body. He was just having fun with regular people. I believe that most of you men are just envious of this man because he happens to have it all. If you are going to make fun of him at least be intelligent about it.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 10:48 PM on 03/30/2008

Some people respond to being visited. People in PA are friendly people.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 10:46 PM on 03/30/2008

I was so very happy to hear that Senator Obama saw fit to visit out community, I had just been to the democratic committee office in Altoona looking for signs, etc for him and they made a comment regarding Altoona being ignored by all canidates, and Blair county always being ignored by these people running for office and felt it was time we were paid attention to, well Sen. Obama sure did it and I only have one regret, and that was I was not at Texas Hot Dog to shake his hand and tell him what a wonderful president he will make. We need someone like him who has not been programed by the government. GOOD FOR YOU SENATOR OBAMA, thank you for coming to out great town of Altoona Pa. There is a great many college students at out Altoona Penn State Campus, who would love to hear from you and vote for you also. I had the pleasure of hearing you speak in person, and I was very impressed. Again thank you so much for being there for Altoona Pa

Amen karma I was at the same office at the knickerbocker. Signed up for a yard sign.

To Misquote Oscar Wilde:

"A good bowling game is a nice thing to be able to do
A great bowling game is a sign of a wasted youth."

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 10:25 PM on 03/30/2008

Obomba pimpin' for votes by playing dress up. How pathetic. Whats next, Obomba in overalls and straw hat. He'll do anything to win votes. Isn't time to step down Baracks?

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 10:15 PM on 03/30/2008

Bowling shoes while bowling is considered dress up?

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 03:58 AM on 03/31/2008

Aw. Your sour grapes are showing.
