Chelsea Clinton Asked About Monica Lewinsky Again, Watch Video

Once again Chelsea Clinton has been asked about the Monica Lewinsky scandal while campaigning for her mother. This time she faced the question at North Carolina State University. Chelsea's response was quite similar to the one she gave last week when a Butler University journalism student first asked the dreaded question.

That is absolutely a fair question to ask HIM. Has the world gone so crazy that anything goes? Hope none of your kids ever have to answer unsavory and unfeeling questions about you. If you think that is okay because you don't agree with her parent's politics, that's pretty sad.

Her father was disbarred because he lied under oath about Monica. Disbarred. That's a pretty big deal for a former president. It's not a fair question? Maybe questions about Gennifer Flowers or Paula Jones or other trailer bait are not fair questions because her father never lied to a grand jury under oath about them and was disbarred for it. But questions about Monica are more than fair.

I don't think so. The problem with Chelsea isn't that she's being rude, or that her questioners are, or that her parents are taking advantage of her. It's just that she's terrible at this.

You could easily imagine someone with actual political skills refusing to answer a question about her dad's infidelity in a way that turned it into a political plus. God, probity and the American Way would be trotted out as the real targets and intended victims. But they would prevail against the hateful Stalinists, the agents of pornography, the welfare queens (nobody said it has to make sense) all bent on using the airwaves to launch their filthy indoctrination. AND FOR THEM TO BRING my father AND MOTHER INTO THIS? HOW DARE THEY?

Unfortunately Chelsea's a stiff, so whether she refuses to say anything, or answers some questions but not others, she just makes everybody uncomfortable. It actually says nothing about her except that she has the wrong personality for public life. By all accounts she's a reasonably bright, perfectly normal young woman. But most people have no idea how much of being a public person doesn't come naturally. And it's a lot. And it doesn't. But thankfully, it's also usually invisible because we're watching a self-selecting pack of publicity hounds. It's only presidential election campaigns that drag an occasional fish out of water like Chelsea into the spotlight for trying to be a good sport for her parents. But not really helping them very much.

What bothered me most about the Monica Lewinsky affair was that Bill Clinton's persecutors were so high on sanctimony that they greatly intensified the injury suffered by the two people whom the President's misbehavior affected most of all: his wife, Hillary, and his daughter, Chelsea. As Clinton's enemies tried to transform a family affair into a Constitutional challenge to the President, they demonstrated how little they cared about Bill Clinton's closest family members, who were the primary victims of his sexual transgressions. Obviously, it was not "family values" that drove this campaign, but naked political ambition.

Eventually, as the Lewinsky-related hearings dragged on, the US-American public came to be as disgusted by the transparently self-serving (and often highly hypocritical) motives of President Clinton's Congressional enemies as by Clinton's own irresponsible behavior. Technically, there was nothing illegal about the attempt to impeach him, but it cost the would-be impeachers as much as it cost Clinton himself, and this, I feel, is just as it should be.

I feel the same way about people who question Chelsea Clinton in public about her father's behavior. If you really feel that what Bill Clinton did was wrong, then you have to respect Chelsea's feelings, too. To try to humiliate her in public only adds to the damage that her father has already done to her and to her mother. It is a shameful tactic that tells us a lot more about the questioners than about any of the Clintons.

Of course, people forget that Lewinsky wasn't the real scandal. It was the sexual harassment of Paula Jones and subsequent perjury that cost him almost a million dollars in fines and civil damages along with the loss of his law license and impeachment by the House of Representatives.

In my posting, I did not speak of any affair except for that which directly involved Monica Lewinsky. I meant that Hillary and Chelsea were "primary victims" only in comparison to the famous intern - who was a "secondary victim" at best. To my knowledge, Lewinsky never charged Bill Clinton with sexual harassment.

Paula Jones is another matter entirely. However, her name has not to my knowledge been mentioned by anyone at Chelsea Clinton's appearances. Nor is she the topic of this thread.

I sympathize with the notion that Paula Jones was the "real scandal" of Bill Clinton, but this scandal took place during Clinton's governorship, not his presidency. Should our Congress take a woman's claims of sexual harassment more seriously when considering her purported harasser's fitness for public office?
