Premiere

Sunday night in New York "Shine a Light" premiered in New York City to a standing ovation. The Martin Scorsese Rolling Stones documentary opens in IMAX this week and features a 2006 concert. All the Stones came, as did new mom Jennifer Lopez and husband Marc Anthony.

The reviews are pretty good. Variety calls it an "invigorating musical trip," Fox News says "it's composed of riveting performances" and the LA Times' long feature calls it "high energy." The Hollywood Reporter is less enamored and say that it's "simply another in a long line of Rolling Stones concert films." Regis Philbin said on "Live with Regis and Kelly" today now much he loved it, and then mimicked Mick Jagger's walk.

Rock and roll hit a dead end with the release of Keith Ricards 2 great solo albums. After that all rockers are screwed and imitative dwarfs. Get day jobs you young idiots. A new music is heading around the corner and gonna kick you dumbos in the butt!

Listen to "Get yer Ya-Ya's Out". One of the best live albums of all time. If you were born after Brian Jones died, you may not know just how vital and raw their music could be. Listen to (most) anything they made before the mid-70's and you can feel it.

That was a looong time ago. I love the Stones of yesterday , but not the Stones of 2008. They've had their run. A great, long run it WAS.

I've had it with "product".

What rightfully deserves criticism here is the focus of a legendary filmmaker (Scorcese) on subject matter that has been re-tooled over and over so many times that it has become a caricature of itself. Yes, I love the Rolling Stones and agree they were a powerful social force 30 years ago. But since then, these multi-millionaires have sold out to giant corporations and essentially abandoned the very rebellion they were once so very famous for espousing.

Scorcese did one rock masterpiece already -- which was The Band's final concert (The Last Waltz). Other great rock documentaries, such as Let it Be, The Song Remains the Same, and even the Stone's own Gimme Shelter captured bands at the creative peak, taking risks. A veiewer never knew what might happen in the next frame.

Instead, what we will get here is Mick and the boys jumping all over the stage, acting interested, singing ongs that are nearly half a century old -- while collecting a big fat paycheck.

I expected more of Martin Scorcese that a regurgitation of material already seen many times over, with added wrinkles and flab.

Sad.

30 years ago? How about 40.

They were young and played music they liked. They wanted to party and get laid. They wrote songs about the times and their observations. We added the rebellion factor. Just as people call Dylan a spokesman for his generation it was us who placed that mantle on him. He is a spokesman for his feelings and the music he loves. The Stones still just want to rock.

I see that in order to be a "Huffpost Pick" you have to slam classic rockers. How downright elitist of you!

And just how old are you that are touting how horrible they are? Just old enough to love the talentless garbage that plays the airwaves these days? No originality...no real balls...and certainly no charisma!!!! Without the Stones, The Who, Van Morrison, The Beatles, Elvis, Muddy Waters, Earth Wind and Fire, et.al, my friends, your bands would be playing twinkle twinkle little star! I pity you when you are 50 and listening to Eminem and Brittney!

The Rolling Stones are garbage. Just LISTEN to a boot of one of their shows. At this point in history the Stones are little more than an amusement park ride for ther over-60 crowd.

But then again, if yer in NYC and invited to a screening of the Stones latest PRODUCT (a product I'll mention relys on tunes over 20-years old) I'm sure you's rise to yer feet also.

I hear Jaggers ass is ten feet tall. And that's a LOOOOOOOONG way to reach fer a KISS.

But it appears there are still a lot of people that like their "garbage". Longevity is the best revenge.

I hate the rolling stones. They're just not that good.

I guess as long as their butt kissers are around, I'll have to see these types of stories.

No offense to anyone who thinks they are actually a good band.

They had their day--it ended about 1973.

They had their day -- oh really, perhaps no one told that to the thousands of people that go to the concerts. This is difference between true artists and one night wonders, these guys are artists.

Yet their concerts still sell out and set records.

Let's see what your favorite band is doing in their sixties, not to mention if they've made 1/100th of the impact on rock 'n' roll that the Stones have! It's true the Stones had more energy and were true rock rebels in the 60s and early 70s, but that's not really the point here. You can watch "Gimme Shelter" if you want the Stones from that era. That they are still doing great rock 'n' roll better than most bands half their age is the real tribute. It's too bad when not-so-original newbie musicians disrespect the pioneers that came before them like the Stones, Beatles, and Who. At least these bands had the integrity to honor the 50s rockers and bluesmen that influenced them early on.

And how many bands of today will still be around in 40 years? Or even 3 years?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:10 PM on 04/01/2008

Why can't you just say "you don't like the rolling stones" not that they care I assure you -- I swear I get so tried of people using the word HATE to describe their feelings for people they don't even know. You died and left you band critic anyway. I not a huge fan but can respect the fact these guys have been around and seem to loved and respected by many people.

Exile on Main Street, Sticky Fingers and Let It Bleed are 3 of the best records ever made and nothing you can say will take that away. You probably haven't heard any of them.
