Hillary Clinton opened up her press conference in Philadelphia today with a bold new challenge to Barack Obama (it was met by "guffaws all around from the press corps"):

"This has been a very hard fought race. We need to do something so that our party and our people can make the right decision. So I have a proposal: today I am challenging Senator Obama to a bowl off. A bowling night right here in Pennsylvania. Winner take all. I'll even spot him two frames.

"It's time for his campaign to get out of the gutter and allow all of the pins to be counted. And I'm prepared to play this game all the way to the tenth frame. and when this game is over the American people will know when that phone rings at 3am they'll have a president who's ready to bown on day one. So let's strike a deal and go bowling for delegates. We don't have a moment to spare.

"Because it's already April Fool's Day. So happy April Fool's Day everyone."

Christopher Hitchens wrote an article recently about women and humor. I really didn't understand what he was talking about, at the time.

IRIE -- you have just asked the most significant question of the last twelve months. Now if we could only get an answer from someone in a real position to know we might be able to predict our futures.

of course she does... she is in the habit of waiting to see how Obama does in a contest before challenging him to that contest... remember Michigan and Florida?

This is actually an interesting idea, even though I know it was a joke. Wouldn't it be weird if they did have a "bowl-off"? Not for the actually nomination, but as a cross party fundraiser for the Democratic party. It would be an interesting way to illustrate that we are indeed one party, and it would raise a lot of money for the general election candidates.

Just a thought.

i'm thinkin obama's people would rather avoid any embarrassing blowouts for their candidate. he raises enough money as it is, why would he help her look good? especially with blue collar pennsylvania watching.

Look .its possible that Senator Obama can pull off this Pennslyvania thing. Its not impossible . We have to have a major get-out-the-vote effort . Also tell Pat Buchanan and Joe Scarborough we dont care about who can bowl the best ,we care about jobs and economic development for central and western pennslavania and ohio . We care about this war thats taking away our young women and men. A war thats costing us billions of dollars .

Y'know, it started funny enough...challenging Obama, whose obviously a bad bowler (like me, frankly). But then she starts talking about him needing to get out of the "gutter" for the challenge. Okay, so it's a gutter ball joke, but it also implies it's Obama's campaign which has hit low ground. Dispite the irony of that implication, I still understand she's joking.

Problem is, she can't tell a joke very well. Like I said, it started well enough, but the longer she continued her April Fools joke, the more "serious" she became. You'll notice the laughter dissipated as she went on.

Clinton has a great sense of humor...especially when reacting. But geez, she's terrible when actually trying to deliver a joke.

^ Obamaloon alert!

Oh, come onnnn. That person just threw her a bone by saying she has a great sense of humor. And they're an Obamaloon?

I don't like her, but my fave Hillary funny was "Well, as I've said, I regret DEEEPLY that there is a Bush in the White House." The "it took a Clinton thing" was overrated. The "I regret deeeply" thing cracked me up for some reason.

Did you see her joke or just read it? Seriously, it was horribly delivered. I loved her "that hurts my feelings" joke at the debate, and some of her other humorous retorts. Like I said, she's got a great sense of humor, especially when spontaneous. Maybe she had too much time to write this joke.

If I'm an Obamaloon for not finding her delivery funny, then her audience was apparently full of Obamaloons.

I saw the clip on MSNBC earlier. It ended before I got to hear if anyone actually laughed. The fact that she had to READ her joke may have taken away some of the humor. I personally thought it was rather lame!

Ewwww....was that the same writer as the "Change you can Xerox" line? Maybe it's her delivery, but it's just not funny. I give her credit for trying humor though, you don't see that from her very much.

Her campaign is millions of dollars in debt, and she probably paid someone $50,000 to write this for her haha!!

I get it... this is Clinton's way of signaling that she has accepted the inevitable loss and is auditioning for Tina Fay's job...

I doubt the voters who are struggling to pay for medical bills, worried about soldiers in Iraq, rising mortgages are laughing. When we lose the election in November none of us will be laughing... thanks to Hillary. I hope you are enjoying the limelight, Hillary, at all of our expense.

That is sooo very funny! She knows she is losing and is grasping at yet another straw to win. The clintons have tried everything else and so far nothing is working. I cannot believe she would go this low as to think after all this time the candidates should not win because of their value but their bowling skills. She's been slick, slimey, a liar, a fool and now she's going for stupid?
