ABC News:

John McCain is a punk. At least that's what the editors of his high school yearbook thought.

"It was a fateful three years ago that the "Punk" first crossed the threshold of the High School," wrote the editors of the red-leather edition of "The Whispers," a glossy yearbook chronicling the achievements of the 1954 class of Episcopal High School in Alexandria, Va.

"His magnetic personality has won for him many life-long friends," the yearbook continued, "but, as magnets must also repel, some have found him hard to get along with."

Yep. Still a square, clean cut, all-America guy from a military family.

Exactly the kind of guy I probably wouldn't have had much contact with in highschool or the military. The product of a political family, helped along at private country club fundraisers and VFWs (never the twain shall meet). I don't disparage his military service or sacrifice, but it's not a criteria for leadership, though in our current political environment where winning offices is equal to winning a lottery AND a "get outta jail free" card, I can see how others think that's what it's all about.
Oddly, there are genuine conservatives who warrant respect due to their understanding of history that while it differs from mine is the product of that much loathed process called "scholarship" or as they like to pronounce it, "elitist nonsense". McCain is not exactly a phoney but the product of what our system has become, a contest of idealogues and not ideologies.
If there were any better argument for the occasional dis-banding of our union so that we can form if not a more perfect one, at least a less corrupt and misguided one, I don't know of a better example than some of the most prominent political figures who crowd the stage for unearned laurels in the arena of public adoration which has become the hallmark of the modern process. Ick.

A man who volunteers to stay a prisoner of war (and be tortured daily) until those that have been imprisoned longer than him are let out first is not a punk.

That wasn't political calculation, THAT WAS CHARACTER!!
Ask yourself, would Hillary or Barrack have done the same?

I believe Hilary's highschool nickname was "the liar" and Barrack's was "the Liberal"

Hillary's high school nickname was "Goldwater Girl." Obama was "Dope Freak." So what?

Whoever had McCain do this biography tour was a genius. This is perhaps the only subject he knows something about, and on which he can deliver with authority. But sooner or later he'll have to talk about the current war or the economy, and thereby display the true state of his mind.

But the biography tour is great, like a grandpa who can't remember what he had for breakfast, yet can talk for hours about that wild night when he turned 21.

And he IS just like Hillary, who would have thunk it. Oh, wait, Hillary can't even keep her own biography strait.

Glad to see Obama fans engaged in a classy debate here.Diasgree all you want o with the man on his policies but throwing slime at a hero-yes I said hero- will not get your messiah anywhere.

Let me get this straight: you try to bomb and kill civilians whose only fault is that of refusing to submit to the whims of an evil empire, you get shot down by antiquated technology and you become...a hero?

Riiight, anything goes in the necon bubble!

That's right. McCain served bravely and honorably and might have died doing so. He did this because the majority of Americans and their elected officials (democrats) thought it was important at the time.
Sometimes being an American or Canadian or a member of a family means being part of a team and having some belief in loyalty. I am truly sorry if loyalty and patriotism are either ridiculous or outdated concepts to you. I am sorry that you hate the place that gave you nurture.
If you consider you country to be an evil empire then YOU are living in a bubble and a classic example of Jay Leno's, Jay Walking generation.

Well sweety, he was flying a sub-sonic plane, the A4, over one of the most heavily defended and fortified spots in the world at that time. During Vietnam, the US lost more A4s than virtually any other plane in the US arsenal. So hinting at piot incompetence is rather weak. I guess the Red Baron was incompetent at flying because he got shot down.

What makes McCain a hero is how he came through his 5.5 years of harsh treatment at the hands of the N. Vietnamese. How strong would your convictions be after enduring beatings/torture 2-3 times a week and at times more often than that? He turned down an offer to go home because he refused preferential treatment. In my book that does meet hero criteria. However, politically, this is irrelevant. Being originally from AZ, I saw his rise in politics but never voted for him. I don't trust him.

Regardless, your simplistic good/bad assertions are quaint. You readily state how evil the US was/is. True, the US did horrible things in Vietnam. Did that excuse all the atrocities committed by the NVA/VC? I also have noticed in your posts a lack of condemnation for Hamas attacks against Israeli civilians but you are quick to condemn Israel for responding. You are not taking sides here are you? There is almost always no good guy/bad guy scenario in war, unless you buy the propoganda.

"War is hell."

My young friends, Rockin" Johnny McCain here to tell you that I am going to the Burning Man.

A friend of mine, Lloyd Bonifide, of Alhambra, California, a retired heating and plumbing businessman, has volunteered to drive us there in his daughter"s Winnebago. It"ll just be me, him, and someone Lloyd says is "Peyote Buttons". Must be an old vaudevillian. Anyway, I think it's important to show you that I'm still a young hep-cat myself. Lloyd is brining his karaoke machine so he and I can put on a show. I"m calling it "Get-out-the-vote with Rockin McCain". We're gonna sing "Blue Suede Shoes" for 24 hours straight. It should quite a crowd, and at the end, I"ll ask you to all vote for me, "Rockin Johnny McCain!" You then have permission to applaud. No applauding will be allowed while we are singing, remember that or I"ll have to get in your face. And you don"t want me in your face, my young friends - I just may instinctively snap your neck. Nothing personal, it"s just how I roll, so listen attentively, then show your appreciation at the conclusion of our performance.

There'll be free NyQuil shooters, but strict rationing will be observed, only one per customer.

Also in the spirit of the Burning Man, Lloyd and I will be wearing nothing but a hell of a lot of sunscreen. Hope you all can make it - be there or be square, my young friends!

Bushgirl:

That's well written and funny as heck, but you gotta admit a visit to Burning Man is edgy, creative campaigning and it's gonna be a plus for McCain.

I bet Team Obama is kicking themselves for not thinking of that.

Ah, I think that's the last place Obama would want to be associated with considering what the repooplicans (I just invented that - I'm feeling about 5 right now) would do with video of that.
