WILKES-BARRE, Pa. — Sen. Barack Obama is talking about the elephant in the room _ Republican rival John McCain _ and all but ignoring the Democrat who stands between him and his party's presidential nomination.

Even though Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton was campaigning miles down the Northeast Extension in Philadelphia, Obama criticized the likely Republican nominee's policies on the U.S. troop presence in Iraq, trade and tax cuts. In his town-hall session Tuesday, and in other campaign appearances in recent days, Obama has sought to frame the race as a general election matchup between him and McCain.

Of course, there's the little matter of a Pennsylvania primary on April 22, and Clinton's double-digit lead in recent state polls.

The extended presidential nomination contest has resulted in an odd political triangle, with each candidate taking alternate turns criticizing one or both of their competitors.

"He's on a biography tour right now," Obama said of McCain. "Most of us know his biography, and it's worthy of our admiration. My argument with John McCain is not with his biography, it's with his policies."

Obama argued that McCain would merely be another four years of President Bush on economic and military policies. McCain has criticized Obama as being inexperienced on national security, and the Illinois senator answered back.

"Meanwhile Senator McCain has been saying I don't understand national security, but he's the one who wants to keep tens of thousands of United States troops in Iraq for as long as 100 years," Obama said.

The McCain and Obama camps have been feuding for days over remarks McCain recently made when he said the U.S. could end up having a long-term military presence in Iraq, similar to the more than 50-year presence of U.S. soldiers in Germany and South Korea.

Story continues below

"One hundred years in a country that had nothing to do with 9/11 may make sense to George Bush and John McCain but it is the wrong thing to do. It is not right for our national security. It is not right for our economy," Obama said to applause at a town hall.

McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds said that given the long history of peacetime U.S. bases overseas, Obama's remarks show his "complete lack of preparedness to be commander in chief."

"His attempt to paint McCain's position as something else is nothing but the disingenuous, old-style politics that he claims to reject," Bounds said.

Though the primary contest has heightened tensions among Democrats fearful it will hurt their chances of winning the general election in November, Obama told the crowd not to worry.

"I don't buy this whole thing that people are super-divided," he said in response to a question. "We are going to come together and focus on the fact that John McCain wants to continue the war in Iraq, I want to end it, John McCain wants to continue George Bush's economic policies."

Later in the day, he traveled to Scranton, where he brought another town hall crowd to its feet in asserting he had the best judgment to guide foreign policy, referencing Clinton's television ad about an emergency early morning phone call.

"When you ask yourself who you want answering that 3 o'clock phone call ... ask yourself: Of the three remaining candidates, who has the judgment to understand what will be a bad decision? Who has the judgment to ask the tough questions? Who's going to keep America on the right track? That's the person you want on that phone call at three in the morning," he said, to rousing applause.

In an interview with Pittsburgh radio station KDKA-AM, Obama was questioned about Clinton's claims that she faced sniper fire on a visit to Bosnia as first lady. She later said she made a mistake.

"I think we all get tired and we all sometimes make mistakes on the campaign trail. I think that the larger issue has been, you know, Senator Clinton's suggestion that she has this vast foreign policy experience that somehow makes her more qualified to be commander in chief than me," he said. "I think that I've had better judgment over the last five years and better equipped to actually deal with the problems that we're actually going to face in the years to come."

For all his complaints about McCain, Obama also talked tough on international trade issues _ a sensitive subject in a state with plenty of blue-collar Democratic votes to be won.

An Iraq war veteran at the town hall asked the senator's opinion of a recent decision by the Pentagon to award a a $35 billion Air Force tanker contract to a consortium led by Airbus, located in Europe, over a bid led by U.S.-based Boeing.

Obama said he had concerns about the deal but an investigation was warranted to find out more.

"I don't mind the Pentagon procuring from other countries but when you've got such an enormous contract for such a vital piece of our U.S. military arsenal, it strikes me that we should have identified a U.S. company that could do it," he said, though he added that he might conclude the decision was justified if it turns out Airbus' bid was 10-15 percent better than Boeing's.

McCain has faced questions about the contract because some of his current advisers lobbied last year for the European Aeronautic Defence and Space Co., the parent company of plane maker Airbus. EADS and its U.S. partner Northrop Grumman Corp. beat Boeing Co. for the lucrative aerial refueling contract.

McCain has said his inquiries into the contract were designed to ensure evenhanded bidding and denied they were motivated by lobbyists who are close advisers to his presidential campaign.

Good to see Obama so focused.

Hillary should be sent to pasture before she has a total mental breakdown. I do believe that her lying even got to her! What a mess ... her campaign should be a movie. Oly Stone ... are you listening?

McCain is pathetic. Only the NeoCon lackies, war profiteers and oil sharks are backing the old codger.

Another great article by Maureen Dowd. As long as Democrats do not let this race go too far after the primaries end, Clinton is only helping Obama get ready for the general. What may have been lost with the polarization of the Democratic Party will be offset by Obama's baptism by fire with the Hillary hate machine.

You bring up a great point. The nomination process is really training for current and future Obama supporters as well. Believe me Obama supporters are itching to train their guns on John McBomb as well. It will feel a whole lot better going after troll warmongers than fellow Democrats. I don't think most Hillary supporters know that most Obama supporters would rather be attacking McCaing right now that's why many of us are so anxious for this race to end. It's not that Obama supporters want to stop other states from voting, it's about a crazy primary and caucus calendar that was heavily front loaded. and should be over by now. While Democrats have a disagreement on who is better able to set this country in the right direction at least we all agree that we need the same change of course. Sorry for all the warship references I'm just in a fighting mood to go after McCain.

Great article.
I think that by Hillary not dropping out yet really does help Senator Obama.
1) It puts off the republican smears for a little longer. 2) Obama will be getting more people registered to vote in the next ten states and that will help him in November. 3) Even though most of the things Clinton says about Obama are negative it gets Obama and Obama's name splashed all over the news everyday more than McCain. 4) Obama gets tougher and stronger as each day passes.

I think if someone is over 65, their medical records should be mandatory. Actually I think 65 is too old anyway. Brain deterioration is rapid at McCain's age.

Only the young and dumb would say such a thing. As a 60 year old, and with a husband of 70 we are active and I will place my brain power against most folks..
It is not age, with age as long as the person is active and we are...working with horses and keeping our land up gives us much to do. McCain has been troubled with cancer...he is also getting very forgetful. I remember Reagan and his taking little naps when in meetings with Nancy nudgeing him and giveing him the answers. But not all people age the same.

I believe Enstein was just fine as far as his brain power...McCain's Mother is a pip and she is in her 90's. It has nothing to do with age it self..it is the person. McCain is loseing it.

Interesting

Sabelius is only there if there is any real question of middle aged women being pissed that HRC was not crowned. Otherwise, a tough guy in a mid sized purple state, with impeccable security cred: Jim Webb.

Why Hagel?

And nobody from congress whose state's governor is a Rethug.

And low and behold...

I especially love the ones who are toting their magic crystal balls, insisting McCain will be elected POTUS.They are the most amusing.

Does Americans need to be Assuage - That all republican

Does Americans need to be Assuage - That All Clinton supporters

Does Americans of any race need to Assuage - That everybody from
another race are bad and need opressing????

WEll I for one will never subscribe to such - IDIOTIC RACISM - Of
this Type of Assumptions - About a whole groupe of People - Based
on one IDIOTIC self centered view.

This is the very type of IDIOTIC RACISM - That leads to genocides.

Simple Example: Only Good Indian - Is a Dead Indian.

and sorry forgot Assuage - is a once used 14th centry term:
1 : to lessen the intensity of (something that pains or distresses) :
ease
2 : pacify, quiet
3 : to put an end to by satisfying : appease, quench

Obama should compare his policies to McCain. If we look at them it requires a republican loser's policies to make Obama look credible. One of his latest- retirees making less than $50,000 should not pay federal income tax. Talk about dumb, unfair and divisive. Same kind of stupid policy he propses when he says young people do not have to sign up and pay for health care until they get sick. It just don't work that way for hwealth care and it certainly cannot fairly work that way for retiree incomes of $50,000. I am a retiree and make less than $50,000 but am I more deserving of no taxes than the millions of young people starting families-including my own children? Obama promises anything to asnybody- he opens his mouth before he thinks. Not a very credible guy in least in the eyes of educated adults who look closely at what he promises. His attempts to outdo Edwards earlier and Clinton today with promises of so much for nothing deserve a lot more suspicion and scrutiny than the Obama loving press has given them. Vote like an adult- pick Hillary.

So you are fine with every healthy young person paying a 10% tax for health care. Face it mandatory heath care will be a boon for insurance companies. That's why they are supporting Hillary more than anyone else. Obama's health care plan will let families cover children up to 25 and will reduce costs trough competition. Corporations will drop employee's health care like a bad habit since it will no longer be a competitive advantage to have a good heath care plan (competition for enticing employees) and make individuals who are covered now pay into the group plans. It's economics 101 increase demand with a mandate and prices will go up. Mandatory heath care will be another Clinton boon for corporations and a disaster for the middle class like NAFTA.

The fact that McCain was beaten by Bush the last time shows that McCain is really a default candidate just like Bob Dole was in '96. The Republican Party nominated McCain because they think he has the best chance to win in the fall based on his biog. But make no mistake as a politician McCain is a very flawed candidate. He inspires no one, is more dull than Hillary as a speaker, is mean spirited and is testy at best, has no vision for the country, is linked to the Iraq war, is plagued with gaffes, knows nothing about the economy when that is the biggest concern of the voters and is less believable every time he opens his mouth.

Why don't you ask McBomb? I can point you to a YouTube where he says he is not good on the economy.

The rules.....

1) When the National Anthem is SUNG the rule is to STAND UP and TAKE OFF YOUR HAT.

2) When the American Pledge of Allegiance is 'said' the rule is to place your hand over your heart.

The photo on the internet is of the NATIONAL ANTHEM - so the fact is that Senator Obama was the only one that did it RIGHT ! He knows the rules!

There are no such rules. There are guidelines. And I like the Senator for thinking, rather than mindlessly following some mindless rituals.
Go Obama!

Flag pins made in China are also not part of "the rules."

The printer is still busy printing his medical records from the 1800's. In about 2 weeks we will enter the 2000's

Mccain has had 4 outbeaks of skin cancer in the last 15 years. That comes out to about one battle with cancer per term. Is that impolite to point out?
