WILKES-BARRE, Pa. — Sen. Barack Obama is talking about the elephant in the room _ Republican rival John McCain _ and all but ignoring the Democrat who stands between him and his party's presidential nomination.

Even though Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton was campaigning miles down the Northeast Extension in Philadelphia, Obama criticized the likely Republican nominee's policies on the U.S. troop presence in Iraq, trade and tax cuts. In his town-hall session Tuesday, and in other campaign appearances in recent days, Obama has sought to frame the race as a general election matchup between him and McCain.

Of course, there's the little matter of a Pennsylvania primary on April 22, and Clinton's double-digit lead in recent state polls.

The extended presidential nomination contest has resulted in an odd political triangle, with each candidate taking alternate turns criticizing one or both of their competitors.

"He's on a biography tour right now," Obama said of McCain. "Most of us know his biography, and it's worthy of our admiration. My argument with John McCain is not with his biography, it's with his policies."

Obama argued that McCain would merely be another four years of President Bush on economic and military policies. McCain has criticized Obama as being inexperienced on national security, and the Illinois senator answered back.

"Meanwhile Senator McCain has been saying I don't understand national security, but he's the one who wants to keep tens of thousands of United States troops in Iraq for as long as 100 years," Obama said.

The McCain and Obama camps have been feuding for days over remarks McCain recently made when he said the U.S. could end up having a long-term military presence in Iraq, similar to the more than 50-year presence of U.S. soldiers in Germany and South Korea.

"One hundred years in a country that had nothing to do with 9/11 may make sense to George Bush and John McCain but it is the wrong thing to do. It is not right for our national security. It is not right for our economy," Obama said to applause at a town hall.

McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds said that given the long history of peacetime U.S. bases overseas, Obama's remarks show his "complete lack of preparedness to be commander in chief."

"His attempt to paint McCain's position as something else is nothing but the disingenuous, old-style politics that he claims to reject," Bounds said.

Though the primary contest has heightened tensions among Democrats fearful it will hurt their chances of winning the general election in November, Obama told the crowd not to worry.

"I don't buy this whole thing that people are super-divided," he said in response to a question. "We are going to come together and focus on the fact that John McCain wants to continue the war in Iraq, I want to end it, John McCain wants to continue George Bush's economic policies."

Later in the day, he traveled to Scranton, where he brought another town hall crowd to its feet in asserting he had the best judgment to guide foreign policy, referencing Clinton's television ad about an emergency early morning phone call.

"When you ask yourself who you want answering that 3 o'clock phone call ... ask yourself: Of the three remaining candidates, who has the judgment to understand what will be a bad decision? Who has the judgment to ask the tough questions? Who's going to keep America on the right track? That's the person you want on that phone call at three in the morning," he said, to rousing applause.

In an interview with Pittsburgh radio station KDKA-AM, Obama was questioned about Clinton's claims that she faced sniper fire on a visit to Bosnia as first lady. She later said she made a mistake.

"I think we all get tired and we all sometimes make mistakes on the campaign trail. I think that the larger issue has been, you know, Senator Clinton's suggestion that she has this vast foreign policy experience that somehow makes her more qualified to be commander in chief than me," he said. "I think that I've had better judgment over the last five years and better equipped to actually deal with the problems that we're actually going to face in the years to come."

For all his complaints about McCain, Obama also talked tough on international trade issues _ a sensitive subject in a state with plenty of blue-collar Democratic votes to be won.

An Iraq war veteran at the town hall asked the senator's opinion of a recent decision by the Pentagon to award a a $35 billion Air Force tanker contract to a consortium led by Airbus, located in Europe, over a bid led by U.S.-based Boeing.

Obama said he had concerns about the deal but an investigation was warranted to find out more.

"I don't mind the Pentagon procuring from other countries but when you've got such an enormous contract for such a vital piece of our U.S. military arsenal, it strikes me that we should have identified a U.S. company that could do it," he said, though he added that he might conclude the decision was justified if it turns out Airbus' bid was 10-15 percent better than Boeing's.

McCain has faced questions about the contract because some of his current advisers lobbied last year for the European Aeronautic Defence and Space Co., the parent company of plane maker Airbus. EADS and its U.S. partner Northrop Grumman Corp. beat Boeing Co. for the lucrative aerial refueling contract.

McCain has said his inquiries into the contract were designed to ensure evenhanded bidding and denied they were motivated by lobbyists who are close advisers to his presidential campaign.

The American Conservative, PAT BUCHANAN'S magazine just ran a story:

"The Right Choice? The conservative case for Barack Obama"
http://www.amconmag.com/2008/2008_03_24/article.html

Oh yes...I know Buchanan comes across completely the opposite on TV but he is getting paid to be the standard right winger on those shows... but if you read his magazine, it is vhemently anti-war and anti-Bush.

Anyway, this is adding to a chorus of conservative mags and writers who are coming out in support of Obama. Why? Because true conservatives believe in non-intervention unless America's best interests are at stake, they are against the war and they see Obama as the best chance to end it. They don't agree with his liberal policies BUT the war is their #1 issue.

McCain "bomb, bomb, bomb Iran" is TOAST.

I hope Buchanan's chills a little when he is on these talk shows. He pushes the idea that Obama should have left the Trinity Church of Christ. It's an intollerant attitude.

Jeremiah Wright said "God damn America, that's in the Bible for killing innocent people." I disagree with Wright's ideas about who is innocent, who is guilty, and why. But those are secular judgements. Obama was not in that church to hear Wright's secular opinions?

We can continue with the intolerant, one-sided, unforgiving ideas and methods of the last seven years or "change".

Obama is the best candidate.

This is something that often goes ignored in our "red state-blue state" society that is perpetuated by the media. There are a great deal of intelligent people out there that are true conservatives. Commonly the impulse is to label them as Libertarians. The fact of the matter is, they believe in the foundations of the American experiment, and there are a lot of them out there and they hate the PNAC driven so-called "neo-conservative" movement that is anything but conservative. And many of them vote independently and are vehemently against U.S. imperialism.

At this point, those that have finally gotten over the Ron Paul thing, tend to waiver toward Republicans, sometimes out of the belief in the myth that is "Republican fiscal responsibility" but they are really just there for the taking if a candidate can show that they will keep the promise of restoring American virtue and get us out of this mess in Iraq and have a sound economic plan.

These voters are Obama's strength. most of them are brainwashed against anything Clinton, but open to voting for Obama now. Now they like Obama, but in November it will be a different story unless America has turned a corner on race, because the Republican slime machine will try to turn Obama into a Black Panther. I hope they started too soon.

I don't care how many gaffes McCain makes. He is going to be our next president. That's not what I want, but that's what's going to happen.

The Republicans have perfected the art of winning elections, by whatever means necessary. There's a lot of time between now and November - plenty of time for Rove and his acolytes to work their magic behind the scenes.

Bush was selected as president in 2000, and - amazingly - reelected in 2004, despite an appalling record. Are the Republicans just going to roll over and accept defeat in '08? I don't think so. They'll pull out the full arsenal of dirty tricks again.

I'd like to believe that, but how could people possibly be any more motivated now than they were in '04? If anything, the stupendous mistake that is the war in Iraq was more in the forefront of people's minds then than it is now. "Fahrenheit 911" was a hit movie. There was plenty of information available about the offenses of Bush and company. And yet he won.

Sorry, but I just don't have faith in America. Either most voters are incredibly stupid, or the system is irreparably broken. Either way, we're in trouble.

And what did we get for those 40 years of Democrat controlled Congress?

Bay of Pigs, Viet Nam, double digit inflation, double digit unemployment, incredible taxation rates with brackets that took away up to 90% of take home pay, full amnesty for millions of illegal immigrants, and finally a peanut farmer for a president topped off with welfare programs that split up more families than they helped. Add in a weak national defense to boot with a piss poor foreign policy and it's not much to laugh at . . . unless misery makes you happy.

Only an idiot would think any of that was funny.

2004 the headline in Europe was "An entire country got it wrong". Europeans are way ahead of these "Reagan Democrats". Whatever that means.

There's something to what you say. Loads of Americans in the south and the heartland will not pull the lever for either a black man or a woman. Neocon mouthpieces like Limbaugh and Coulter are portraying McCain as a liberal (!), probably to promote him to the more conservative Democratic voters. Republicans are going to vote for him anyway, regardless of what Limbaugh et al are saying now.

And McCain will be our next president. Mark my words.

From NBC's Domenico Montanaro
NBC News has adjusted the delegate count in Mississippi, giving one more to Obama and one less to Clinton. The count was 19-14 and now stands at 20-13. The official results were certified in Mississippi and Obama finished with a slightly higher statewide vote result than originally indicated, 62.5% to 37.5%. That result broke a threshold and triggered the extra delegate.

We are also, however, reducing Obama's superdelegate count by one, since Rep. Al Wynn (D-MD), who lost his primary fight, said he will leave his office in June, two months before the Democratic convention. No word yet if Wynn's exit will reduce the total number of superdelegates from 794 to 793.

Earlier today, we noted that Obama won the total delegates in Texas, 99-94, after the remaining nine caucus delegates were allocated 7-2 for Obama.

Obama now leads by 130 in the overall delegate count, 1637-1507. Obama leads by 164 pledged delegates, 1416-1252. (There remains just one delegate unallocated by NBC News from Democrats Abroad.) Clinton leads among superdelegates, 255-221, per the NBC News Political Unit count.

Obama picked a couple more delegates in Illinois also today.
Hillary did not qualify in South Chicago - so Obama came out with two more from the state.

So has Obama now officially won Texas ? I'm a little confused (and not making any political point here) - what is the 'official' determination of winning Texas - is it delegates, or total votes, or is there some other criterion ?? I'm just remembering a while back when people were saying he won more...something...(delegates, even then ?) in TX, but Hillary still "won." Could anyone clarify this, please, and esp. provide links of any official results ?

I think it's smart for Obama to concentrate on McCain. I might think better of Hillary if she, too, spent her time criticizing McCain rather than endorsing him over Obama. The Democratic nominee should be the candidate who's best at taking on the Republicans, not the one who's best at mud-slinging at a fellow Democrat.

Actually Clinton and Obama trained their guns on McCain's feeble "economic plan". McCain has no economic plan except for drafting young people for his other wars. There is a 90% likelyhood that McCain will need to institute a draft to fight his new war with Iran. He is already giving us the same lies that Bush has given trying to link Al Queda with Iran. Who said a gaffe is when a candidate speaks the truth? The "truth" is a relative term for McCain of course.

((( "Of course, there's the little matter of a Pennsylvania primary on April 22, and Clinton's double-digit lead in recent state polls." )))

Obama will be the Democratic nominee regardless of who wins in Pennsylvania (and for the record, Obama cut Hillary's lead to 5% today). Ignoring Hillary is exactly the right strategy for him, since it keeps him above the fray while simultaneously marginalizing her campaign, and gets people used to the idea that he'll be the one facing McCain in November. This is another in a long line of smart decisions from Obama.

Well, considering that Pakistan has been hiding OBL since before 9/11, I would have to say, that's kind of a reasonable suggestion!

Formerly, he was simply Bush's Whipped Dog. Now, he can close his ideological cloak, especially at the back, and truly be called "McBush".

Please Pennsylvanians, listen to Mr. Obama. That there are still so many Clinton supporters after her recent gaffe (read that lies), we should really be supporting our only hope to take back the White House, Barack Obama!

Participating in Rush's fiasco, doesn't make you a Clinton supporter.

Well, I can see by your writing that it IS true that Hillary has a greater appeal to voters with less education. You repeat all the right wing talking points, so you're probably a Republican troll. Go ahead and vote for McCain. He'll need all the help he can get. But as far as the Democratic nominee -- yep, you're "wright," it's gonna be Obama, and thank God for that!

OK, so...I'm putting you down as one of the 30% of Americans who will be voting for McCain.

Shall I pencil you in?

To lose?

Really effing big?

Speak for yourself: "us Clinton supporters" will be voting for Obama if he becomes the Democratic nominee. You see, they will know what their choice is: vote for the flip-flopping Bush lackey bomb-crazy dodder, or vote for the best hope for America's future. It should be a straight-forward decision for genuine Clinton supporters.

perhaps you haven't realized yet, NO ONE HAS EVER had the experience needed to become president! Well, I take that back ONE man has been ready on day one. That man was Grover Cleveland, who is the only president to serve non-concurrent terms, thus making him the 22nd and 24th presidents. This means that on day on of his 2nd term he was ready to take over!!!
