WILKES-BARRE, Pa. — Sen. Barack Obama is talking about the elephant in the room _ Republican rival John McCain _ and all but ignoring the Democrat who stands between him and his party's presidential nomination.

Even though Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton was campaigning miles down the Northeast Extension in Philadelphia, Obama criticized the likely Republican nominee's policies on the U.S. troop presence in Iraq, trade and tax cuts. In his town-hall session Tuesday, and in other campaign appearances in recent days, Obama has sought to frame the race as a general election matchup between him and McCain.

Of course, there's the little matter of a Pennsylvania primary on April 22, and Clinton's double-digit lead in recent state polls.

The extended presidential nomination contest has resulted in an odd political triangle, with each candidate taking alternate turns criticizing one or both of their competitors.

"He's on a biography tour right now," Obama said of McCain. "Most of us know his biography, and it's worthy of our admiration. My argument with John McCain is not with his biography, it's with his policies."

Obama argued that McCain would merely be another four years of President Bush on economic and military policies. McCain has criticized Obama as being inexperienced on national security, and the Illinois senator answered back.

"Meanwhile Senator McCain has been saying I don't understand national security, but he's the one who wants to keep tens of thousands of United States troops in Iraq for as long as 100 years," Obama said.

The McCain and Obama camps have been feuding for days over remarks McCain recently made when he said the U.S. could end up having a long-term military presence in Iraq, similar to the more than 50-year presence of U.S. soldiers in Germany and South Korea.

Story continues below

"One hundred years in a country that had nothing to do with 9/11 may make sense to George Bush and John McCain but it is the wrong thing to do. It is not right for our national security. It is not right for our economy," Obama said to applause at a town hall.

McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds said that given the long history of peacetime U.S. bases overseas, Obama's remarks show his "complete lack of preparedness to be commander in chief."

"His attempt to paint McCain's position as something else is nothing but the disingenuous, old-style politics that he claims to reject," Bounds said.

Though the primary contest has heightened tensions among Democrats fearful it will hurt their chances of winning the general election in November, Obama told the crowd not to worry.

"I don't buy this whole thing that people are super-divided," he said in response to a question. "We are going to come together and focus on the fact that John McCain wants to continue the war in Iraq, I want to end it, John McCain wants to continue George Bush's economic policies."

Later in the day, he traveled to Scranton, where he brought another town hall crowd to its feet in asserting he had the best judgment to guide foreign policy, referencing Clinton's television ad about an emergency early morning phone call.

"When you ask yourself who you want answering that 3 o'clock phone call ... ask yourself: Of the three remaining candidates, who has the judgment to understand what will be a bad decision? Who has the judgment to ask the tough questions? Who's going to keep America on the right track? That's the person you want on that phone call at three in the morning," he said, to rousing applause.

In an interview with Pittsburgh radio station KDKA-AM, Obama was questioned about Clinton's claims that she faced sniper fire on a visit to Bosnia as first lady. She later said she made a mistake.

"I think we all get tired and we all sometimes make mistakes on the campaign trail. I think that the larger issue has been, you know, Senator Clinton's suggestion that she has this vast foreign policy experience that somehow makes her more qualified to be commander in chief than me," he said. "I think that I've had better judgment over the last five years and better equipped to actually deal with the problems that we're actually going to face in the years to come."

For all his complaints about McCain, Obama also talked tough on international trade issues _ a sensitive subject in a state with plenty of blue-collar Democratic votes to be won.

An Iraq war veteran at the town hall asked the senator's opinion of a recent decision by the Pentagon to award a a $35 billion Air Force tanker contract to a consortium led by Airbus, located in Europe, over a bid led by U.S.-based Boeing.

Obama said he had concerns about the deal but an investigation was warranted to find out more.

"I don't mind the Pentagon procuring from other countries but when you've got such an enormous contract for such a vital piece of our U.S. military arsenal, it strikes me that we should have identified a U.S. company that could do it," he said, though he added that he might conclude the decision was justified if it turns out Airbus' bid was 10-15 percent better than Boeing's.

McCain has faced questions about the contract because some of his current advisers lobbied last year for the European Aeronautic Defence and Space Co., the parent company of plane maker Airbus. EADS and its U.S. partner Northrop Grumman Corp. beat Boeing Co. for the lucrative aerial refueling contract.

McCain has said his inquiries into the contract were designed to ensure evenhanded bidding and denied they were motivated by lobbyists who are close advisers to his presidential campaign.

Hillary then proceeded to write a legal brief arguing there was no precedent for the right to representation by counsel during an impeachment proceeding – as if the Douglas case had never occurred.

The brief was so fraudulent and ridiculous, Zeifman believes Hillary would have been disbarred if she had submitted it to a judge.

Zeifman says that if Hillary, Marshall, Nussbaum and Doar had succeeded, members of the House Judiciary Committee would have also been denied the right to cross-examine witnesses, and denied the opportunity to even participate in the drafting of articles of impeachment against Nixon.

http://www.northstarwriters.com/dc163.htm

Please do not vote for Hillary, she is a liar and would lie and do anything to win, even break the law. One more straw on the camel's back. When this professor hits the MSM, Hillary is done.

Obama will win the democratic nomination. McCain is a weak Republican candidate, who does not have the support of the base but yet leads Obama in the polls.

HuffPost is not doing its job of fully covering what's important in this elections, issues espoused by the candidates themselves. No mention has yet been made on Obama's view on abortion. In his campaign swing in PA, he said: if his daughters made a mistake, he wouldn't want them punished with a child and STD. That's a legitimate campaign issue as it may influence his pick for the Supreme Court.

Also, Politico.com found out that Obama is far to the left that he's letting on in his campaign. That's also a legitimate issue if he's presenting himself for what he's not.

The above mention will help contrast him with McCain and should be brought out here and discussed.

Conservatives fought for the 3/5 rule that counted slaves as partial humans.
Conservatives fought for secession from the Union because they wanted to keep slaves.
Conservatives fought against women’s suffrage.

Lincoln was not a conservative and the Republican party was a liberal party at the time. That is why Southerners voted Democrat until Nixon's southern strategy brought them into the party that truly loves them and their bigotted dinosaur ways--the Republicans.

Lincoln couldn't get nominated to run for dog catcher in the modern Republican Party. Neither could Teddy Roosevelt. Granted, TR was something of jingoist, which would be fine with contemporary GOP neocons, but he was also definitely a progressive.

It was classic liberals, not today's statist socialists who were the impetus to the Declaration of Independence, fought the Revolution (supported by less than half of the inhabitants). Today's true conservatives are closer to the classic liberals of the American Revolution.

The War of Northern Aggression was fought because Abraham Lincoln did not believe in splitting the Union (secession was and remains constitutional) and he sent Federal troops to Fort Sumter. Also, the Northern states, with more representation passed economic burdens on the Southern states that did not apply in the North.

The rest of your points are inflammatory at best, especially that it was populist southern democrats who imposed Jim Crow laws, fought against civil rights and to top it off, it was Rosalynn Carter who put the crazies on the streets.

Senator Obama is taking th correct approach. Focus on McCain, and the Iraq War-Economy linked issues. Senator Clinton will have no choice but to speak to this dynamic in order to stay relevant, as opposed to keeping the focus on Clinton vs. Obama. From here on out, the tenor changes to being about McCain and his following of the Bush failed policies. Obama is right on cue for this candidate race.

I am continually impressed with the campaign Obama is running. He's not perfect, but that's the debate we should be having, his policies and judgment vs. McCain's. He is critical but respectful. Clinton is just arrogant and derogatory. I've yet to hear what foreign policy "experience" beyond tea and crumpets in 80 odd countries she has that elevates her above Obama. He clearly has shown better judgment on the the issues, better management of his campaign, better discussion of the issues, just better judgment all around. The whole point of experience is to improve your judgment, otherwise, what's the point? "Experience" in the abstract is useless if it doesn't inform. Clinton claims expericence, but hasn't the maturity to admit a mistake when her judgment is incorrect, the most glaring example being her policies on Iraq. So what is the benefit of her "experience"? She should show a little class and campaign the way Obama does, unless she's really just angling for VP for McLame.

"In the poll, 59 percent of Democrats said that Obama would have the better chance as the Democratic nominee in November, compared to 30 percent for Hillary Clinton. Among Republicans, 64 percent said their presumptive nominee, John McCain, would have a better chance to win against Clinton, while only 22 percent said Obama would be the weaker Democrat."

nochnoi,
Well she actually FELL down, while running from sniper bullets on the tarmac in Bosnia. (Or was pushed.) It seems there was an issue of sleep deprivation or perhaps just terminal prevarication in its last stages...at any rate you might have missed that episode in The Continuing Saga of OC Lies, as told to Penn, Ickes and the American public. But she ain't goin' anywhere, except the steps of the Philly Art Gallery in her boxing shorts; she's Rocky, this week.

I did hear her say that she wasn't going to run only half way up the steps....

We will give her a Philly Cheese Steak sandwich for running all the way up the steps... snap her photo like every good tourist does, and wish her a safe trip home....

Does anyone else have a problem with the Pentagon outsourcing a 35billion dollar air force tanker contract to europe. With this economy. Did we borrow that money from china too?? That contract should have been kept in the usa...

YES I HAVE A LARGE PROBLEM WITH THE OUTSOURCING, ALLLLL OF IT! IT JUST SHOWS HOW IMPORTANT AMERICAN CITIZENS AND THEIR NEEDS ARE TO THIS ADMINISTRATION AND THE OTHER ONE INVOLVED IN THESE TRADE AGREEMENTS! IT MAKES ME SICK TO MY STOMACH, ALMOST AS MUCH AS BUSHITS FACE DOES.

This is not "outsourcing". Pentagon might just be buying the best equipment for our troops, from whoever makes the best equipment. That's the way it should be.

Not necessarily. Pentagon's job is to get the best equipment for our troops for the best price. Period. Job creation should not be their criterion.

I think the Congress should certainly look into it, but there is nothing as such wrong with foreign purchases.

In this case it was not about the equipment. It was about McCain once again writing letters for his lobbyist friends (this time Northrup) and showing hypocrisy by pointing out the corruption with Boeing but not with the institutionalized corruption within European aerospace companies.

Clinton: Obama Tries to Deny Voters a Say in Nomination
Amy Chozick reports on the presidential race.

Speaking via satellite to television stations in North Carolina, Montana and Indiana on Monday, Sen. Hillary Clinton accused Sen. Barack Obama of trying to deprive voters in the remaining states of having a say in the Democratic presidential nomination by urging her to withdraw.

“I didn’t understand why Sen. Obama and some of his supporters wanted to prevent you and other states from actually being able to vote,” she told a Wilmington, N.C., television station. Over the weekend, Sen. Obama told reporters, “My attitude is that Sen. Clinton can run as long as she wants.”

... for those of you who have been insisting that Hillary never said Obama himself wanted to stop votes!

So now we have Democrats quoting the WSJ to make their point?

Do you have any idea of what the WSJ's political stand is?

Well I guess that explains why the WSJ would not challenge such an outright and provable lie.

Much better than Fox news where everyone was getting their talking points to dump on Rev Jeremiah Wright, a GREAT AMERICAN.

Do YOU want the "voting" to stop? Do YOU want the votes of PA,MT, etc. to not count?

Everybody deserves a vote.

Psst: you seem to be a bit behind here...

First: Republicans still vote in their primaries even though McCain in the nominee, so it is misleading to suggest that someone conceding would "stop the vote". The voting will go on regardless of whether she is in or out of the race.

Second, Obama never said this at all. She is outright lying.

We already know she is a pathological liar. WSJ is owned by Murdoch.
