Flirt

Via Mark Halperin, the pool report from Obama's campaign stop in Allentown, Pennsylvania:

It may be April Fools Day, but Sen. Barack Obama was acting like it was Valentine's Day. He was in full charm mode while touring the Tama Manufacturing plant, a JC Penny supplier of made-in-the-USA clothing in Allentown.

Obama was especially flirtatious today, winking and grinning at the female workers who were swooning behind their cell phone cameras. Tama President Mark Fogelman told quality inspector Carol Davis not to be nervous when she talked to Obama, even though he was "only the next
president" greeting her. Obama smiled ear to ear as he looked at her work, saying: "These look pretty comfortable, this is all pretty leisure wear."

After the presidential hopeful walked away, Davis let out a "Whoo!" and fanned herself.

"It got hot in here. He ain't bad looking either," she told your pooler.

"I hope he wins," Davis said, adding she was not registered to vote. "I wish all of them good luck, just bring the troops home is all." During the 25-minute tour, Obama called a woman "sweetie," and thanked her in spanish, then told another woman who let him know she is from Thailand, "I love Thai food."

But Obama lavished compliments on dancewear manufacturer Marisa Cerveris, who gave him a black and pink leotard for Malia and Sasha, explaining she was once in the New York City ballet. "You look like you might be a dancer," Obama told her, later adding: "You're big time."

"You're gorgeous," he told Cerveris after glancing at one of her old ballet photos.

"I was," she replied.

Story continues below

"You still are," he countered, asking the crowd, "Isn't she beautiful?" and answering his own question: "Absolutely."

Holding the leotards, Obama thanked her, saying, "This is such a nice gift," and telling her that his daughters attend a Chicago dance theater.

"They have been going there since they were three," he said, back when the dance moves were little more than "just spinning around." He punctuated his joke with a full twirl. "I don't miss a recital," he said.

But, "Sometimes they'll be like the tenth performance ... everybody's else's kid is cute but let's face it, you probably wouldn't sit there for an hour and a half," he said, laughing. Later, Cerveris, who also danced on Broadway, told your pooler "He is the best."

She complimented his art policy and said she believes he will fix NAFTA.

The nitty gritty of the business (picked up only by the lavalier mic Obama wore because plant was so loud) was interesting. The whistle blew at 9:35 right as the senator arrived and the workers promptly went on break, barely glancing at Obama inspecting their work stations. At 9:45 it blew again and they were back to work.

While on the tour, Obama asked how Tama is capable of remaining in the United States when so many companies are moving overseas. Fogelman said it is tough, and said his application for an H2B Visa to get workers from Mexico was denied because there were plenty of United
States workers.

"But it really is hard to find workers," he told Obama. "Nobody is coming into the business." Fogelman said the fabric comes from Greensboro, adding: "If the mills close up we'll probably be finished." Obama asked about their hourly wage (minimum is $8, and the average
worker at Tama earns $10.50 per hour.) "I'm glad to see we still have a good company here with a good owner looking after his workers," Obama said as he toured the pressing department, where some of the workers sported Unite Here t-shirts.

The workers, mostly women, worked with a contraption Fogelman explained to Obama was called an "eton system" that cost him $600,000 and was financed in part by a state grant of $200,000. It looked like a steam iron suspended by a bungee cord, and Fogelman said it "brings the work right to the worker ... so they don't have to waste time and twist." Perhaps a sign of their repetitive work, one woman sported two wristbands suggesting she had a wrist injury. It took one worker an average of 22 seconds to steam the seams of what looked like a pair of black track pants with a big white elastic waistband. (Think grandma, not J-Lo.)

Speaking of which, Fogelman told the senator his grandma might wear their brand of clothing, "for the progressive lady who wants some comfort," labeled Alfred Dunner.

"What size is she?" Fogelman asked. "I don't know," Obama said, laughing.

Nearly everything on the manufacturing line was black (prompting Salon's Walter Shapiro to speculate they were making nun habits) something Obama noted when he walked in. Fogelman, whose grandpa started the company 54 years ago, told Obama they use one fabric in one color each day to "keep it efficient."

Tama also makes military uniforms. Fogelman showed Obama some kind of clothing your pooler couldn't see that included a silk-screened picture used for the White House's "Office of Remembrance."

Obama called that a "very nice idea."

While on the tour, Obama met Gulf War veteran Josh Williams, a Tama supervisor who asked the senator to sign his beret. Obama wrote "Thanks for your service."

Obama chatted with a local pastor before leaving the plant, asking him to: "Pray for me."

Perhaps of interest from before the tour: While your poolers waited for their sweep in the gray drizzle, Obama arrived in the SUV with a little wave wearing a baseball hat as if he'd been working out. Our bus left without Obama (but somehow didn't get "dirty" - ask Jen Psaki to explain that one, it's about as logical as the credentials committee) so we can't confirm exactly how long it takes the senator to get ready in the morning. But the full transformation from Basketball Obama to Suit-and-Tie Obama, with a 15 minute drive in between, took 82 minutes.

But that thing where Obama seems to draw an equivalence between a baby and an STD as punishments deserves attention.

Was that something he wrote himself? Impressive. I'm sure he meant every word of it.

Huh? You call this "a seducer" ? Obama is charming and funny. By all accounts he is also a good husband and a dedicated father...
I work with lots of guys, so I posted a sign in my office that says: SEXUAL HARRASSMENT WILL NOT BE REPORTED, HOWEVER, IT WILL BE GRADED. It generates lots of laughs, as intended, and no disrespect, whatsoever. Please lighten up...

I agree; her human side does not come across as being genuine; it comes across as someone who knows more than you, is more than you and doesn't want you to forget it.
Barack is natural and at ease with regular folks; he's genuine, people sense that in him.

Sen. Obama has lived an usual life, he's lives in two worlds, black and white. He's been middle class and very successful. So which of these candidates can better relate and understands what it's like for most people in this country? The one that talks about it or the one that has lived it? It's his diverse background I feel that makes people feel a kind ship to him.

Oh please, if you actually spent time around Hillary on the campaign trail I'm sure you'd see her being just as natural, genuine and at ease toward regular folks as Barack . I notice the media gives him a lot more coverage than Hillary when campaigning, and so you can see him interacting more with people. Based on that I don't think it's fair to judge her like you did.

Try making a few more gutter balls...

Didn't impress anybody with his "ease" with "regular" folks...

I take it your notion of regular folks: the people who have been supporting him:

Limousine liberals
College kids...

That's all he has...NOT regular people.

off topic - if anyone was just watching Race To The White House with David Gregory, Rachel Maddow bought up the delegate win by Obama in Texas, and Joe Scarborough, now I know why I cannot stand him and I said he was in the tank for Hillary all along. Joe Scarborough said well we reported that Hillary won Texas and nobody knew that Obama won until just now, meaning that he has his own show and he sure as hell has not reported it and neither has anymore of the MSM. David Gregory is a jerk also, because he never picked up on it and he' s supposed to be such a good reporter!

That was pretty funny. Rachel said "Actually, Obama won Texas because he just won more delegates." and Joe said "No, because that's not what WE have been reporting." Haha, ok...does it make it untrue then?
Loved when Joe tried to say to her "Oh, what do you know about the Republican party, Rachel? Nothing!" and she said "Ok, Joe. I'll just shut up for you than, because apparently I can only comment on Democratic things since I'm a Democrat."

Nothing like losing the popular vote and winning more delegates because the "caucus" overrode what the overwhelming number of voters expressed...and these people complain that the super delegaites might do the same thing to them. The Texas Caucus is a superdelegate system, technically. Even though it is open to all democratic voters, it does require a person being able to devote many hours more AFTER actually voting at a poling place to get counted a second time. Sounds like a fishy system to override the general voting public to me. At least in the midwestern states people didn ot have to vote twice to get full representation at the convention

Obviously, inflection, intent, and all the other non-verbal parts of communication, determines meaning here. This is no different than two female coworkers and I, who are in nothing other than a cordial professional relationship where we have earned eachother's respect, referring to eachother as "dear" and "hon" as a term of respect.

I love it when those who fear Obama compare him to Bush. The difference is that Obama has shown a history and track record of: 1) working for a living 2) helping and organizing those in need 3) building grassroots initiatives 4) staying loyal to his wife and family 5) not throwing people under the bus when every one expects him to.

Bush has: 1) never held a real job in his life 2) never helped anyone poorer than he is 3) built a true loyal following based on his background (it was given to him by the neocons) 4) thrown people under the bus when campaigning and refused to hold his cabinet or himself responsible for his mistake.

Aside from the above, I am sure both Obama and Bush would be great beer buddies over a baseball game.

I agree that was a dumb thing to say, a foot-in-mouth moment...but I can relate to his situation because my mother is Dutch and dad is black...it makes you a little bit schizophrenic, trust me. I was lucky because both sides of my family are cool, for the most part, and not racist...but I have other biracial friends who have been much, much less fortunate, and bear the scars of having relatives who didn't want to know them (like my half Polish half Black husband, whose white relatives he has never met!), or didn't care, or outright hated them...and the hate was ALWAYS from the white relatives. Black people, 99% of them, are used to having mixed blood in the family, because due to endemic culture of rape during slavery, the average black American is 25% white, and only 75% black by DNA. Think about that! :0

From a lifelong Chicagoan who has watched Obama from early on, this is the real Barack. What most of you are hearing in his words, on stumps and in sound bites, as just a speech is only the least that. This has been this mans mission since he was organizing the steel workers who were laid off during the down slide. When a USS plant closes pain has no racial preferences. Many communities were hurt. Barack has always had this way of bringing the greater community together to address the common issues. No one will ever accuse him of condescension. It's a type of unique empowerment that he sees in the American dynamic. Through many, One!!! He was able to apply this dynamic at the state level and managing to make friends on both sides of the aisle. He has reminded Washington that there is a alternative to stagnation from disagreement. Differences contribute to building a greater strength. MORE PERFECT! Obamas road map is simple to grasp. THE CONSTITUTION!!! You should not be shocked at his ease with common people. It's who he is. Who better to represent us? Pay attention to the success he has achieved while growing into a National Representative without forgetting his small town values. Many have claimed this moniker in the past but he is showing us what it's truly about. Don't be shocked that he is just like your neighbor ... Look around you America ... He IS your neighbor!

I appreciate your comments. It did not fall on deaf ears. Too bad we have some children playing tonight. It really is sad that there are Americans who are filled with such hatred. It's funny how they mention Wright, but never mention all the hate filled speech that goes on everyday on right wing radio and the internet. If they were truly interested in Americans attempting to be "one" they would attempt to post more responsible comments. They are not interested and these are the kind of people that make others around the world look at us in such a negative way. Too bad.
