CHICAGO — Roger Ebert will resume writing reviews later this month, but will not rejoin his syndicated TV show because he's still unable to speak.

In a letter published in Tuesday's Chicago Sun-Times, the Pulitzer Prize-winning film critic and co-host of TV's "Ebert & Roeper" said surgery in January ended in complications, and his ability to speak was not restored. He said the return of speech would require another surgery.

"But I still have all my other abilities, including the love of viewing movies and writing about them," Ebert said.

Ebert, 65, said he's looking forward to his annual film festival starting April 23.

"I will resume writing movie reviews shortly thereafter," he said.

Ebert, famous for his "thumbs-up" or "thumbs-down" critiques, had surgery in 2006 to remove a cancerous growth on his salivary gland. He also had emergency surgery that year after a blood vessel burst near the site of the operation.

He had undergone cancer surgery three times before the 2006 operation _ once in 2002 to remove a malignant tumor on his thyroid gland and twice on his salivary gland the following year.

Ebert said he remains cancer-free, and is not ready to think about more surgery.

"I should be content with the abundance I have," he said.

The 10th annual Ebertfest at the University of Illinois runs April 23-27. Ebert chose 13 films for the festival.

Best wishes to Roger Ebert! He has shown nothing but courage and character while going through this terrible crisis with his health.

I have lived next to Chicago most of my life and watched his career closely, both in print and on television.

I'm proud to say that I have Siskel & Ebert's 10 Best/!0 Worst shows on tape for each year dating back to 1983. I've since transferred them to DVD-R and they are an absolute joy for this film lover to watch. Interestingly enough, the "Worst of the year" shows are more entertaining than the "Best of the year".

While I am relieved to hear that Roger is healing, I hope that he will get his voice back soon. I so miss hearing his bantering wit when discussing film. We miss you on the tube, Roger. Ebert & Roeper...well...just ISN'T without Ebert.

Good writing and critical thinking are cultural treasures. --thank you for your contribution. The great thing about the Internet is that speech or hearing problems aren't a factor, so keeping in touch with friends and staying engaged with the public in an interactive way is still possible

I agreed with him more often than not. His guilty pleasure picks were my favorite!

When he does finally die, I beg cartoonists to please refrain from drawing pictures of Siskel and Ebert in heaven, watching movies together in the clouds, or giving God the thumbs up.

Godspeed, Mr. Ebert. I've often followed your advice on which movies to view.

It is nice to see Ebert again. I grew up watching Siskel and Ebert and fell in love with the art of making movies because of their passion. I cried when Siskel passed. I cannot wait to read Ebert's reviews again, maybe I will be reminded why I fell in love with movies in the first place.

The man has a great attitude and deserves all the credit for surviving more than his share of adversity.

Like Hemingway said, "Courage is grace under pressure." Ebert has shown so much courage, and so much grace. His messages to fans at his website have been courageous, touching, honest, and completely lacking any self-pity--just a lot of character--and love for what he does and the good in the life he has.

Great to see you again, Roger. I always look forward to your reviews, they've been my favorites for over 25 years. All the best to you and your wonderful wife.

People seem to forget that Ebert was the only Movie Critic at the time to win a Pulitzer for his outstanding writing before he was ever on tv; and that's how I became a fan of his and of movies.

Welcome back, Roger!

All the best to you, Roger! You always argued for the films you love (and hate), and it will be great to read your take on the movies again.

It will be good to see him get back to work. With all the crap movies out I need someone smart to sift through this stuff so I know what to go see.

It's ironic that both he and Gene Siskel both had cancer. Gene Siskel lost his battle years ago and the movie world has been poorer because of it.

Keep on fighting Roger! It would be a tragedy to lose you too.
