About Sam Stein

Sam Stein is a Political Reporter at the Huffington Post, based in Washington, D.C. Previously he has worked for Newsweek magazine, the New York Daily News and the investigative journalism group Center for Public Integrity. He has a masters from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and is a graduate of Dartmouth College. Sam can be reached at stein@huffingtonpost.com.

Sen. Dick Durbin, one of Barack Obama's chief surrogates, said on Wednesday morning that Sen. Hillary Clinton was within her right to use Obama's controversial former pastor as a method to persuade superdelegate support.

But, he added, such a move would likely not bear political fruit.

"Harold Ickes [one of Clinton's chief strategists] can try whatever he'd like to try by way of tactics to win the superdelegates," said Durbin. "But I believe that most of them feel as I do, that Barack Obama has handled this is a responsible way and in a way we would like to see from the president."

On Tuesday, it was reported that Ickes, in an effort to recruit superdelegates to the Clinton camp, had raised the specter of fierce Republican attacks on Obama's relationship to Reverend Jeremiah Wright.

"Superdelegates have to take into account the strengths and weakness of both candidates and decide who would make the strongest candidate against what will undoubtedly be ferocious Republican attacks," Ickes told Talking Points Memo. "I've had super delegates tell me that the Wright issue is a real issue for them."

The statement, while relatively predictable, was the first public admission that the Clinton camp was privately using Wright for political leverage. And while Durbin suggested that it would prove ineffective -- "What has happened since [Obama's] Philadelphia [race] speech is that the ground lost initially has been regained," he told The Huffington Post -- conversations with several uncommitted superdelegates suggested the pastor problem could play a mix role in affecting their decisions.

In the end, much may depend on geography.

According to Nathan Smith, a superdelegate and Kentucky Democratic Party vice chairman, Wright is likely to have a massive impact on voters in his state and geographic region. And, consequently, could affect his judgment when choosing a nominee.

"Poor white people are freaked out by Wright," said Smith. "It has hurt [Obama] bad West Virginia and Kentucky. You can go down the Ohio River and it is ugly. He is going to take an ass whooping... These are not traditional southern racists. They are poor income whites who are shocked. They woke up one morning and said, 'I think he's black!' They were just in a daze. 'He wouldn't tell his preacher to stop that?' ... These are the people who wrapped themselves in the flag for George W. Bush. It is not about him being black it is about the god damn American comment. This is not a religious thing it is about patriotism."

On the other side of the equation is a superdelegate from the west coast who (asking for anonymity) said the Wright issue had died down in his state. Political pressure on the matter, he added, now broke down on the candidate line: concern from Clinton supporters and dismissal from Obama backers.

"It depends to some degree whom you are talking to," he said. "I had a passionate Clinton supporter come into my office and rail about it. My reaction is that I grew up on the south side of Chicago. I can understand exactly what is going on here and I don't think it is a factor at all in making an assessment to Senator Obama... I think I see it dying down. What I get a sense of from the press coverage and the folks that are in the middle - and there aren't too many - I don't think it is moving people one way or another."

Although I enjoyed the article, I noted a portion, herein, that I thought was questionable.
How many poor white people were interviewed or took some survey to say verbatim, they were "freaked out" or felt that the statement, "...god damn american comment" was key to their fears? Not saying it wouldn't be.And when they were interviewed, how many allowed to be labeled explicitly as poor white people? Did they own TV's or TV's that work to hear Obama? Or did they get it from heresay as most poor people do and based their judgment on "JohnBoy" down the street. How many journalist are going to go to ANY POOR PEOPLES neighborhood in MULTIPLE states to retrieve a census that poor whites all think like this? Because even if you went to ALL of these neighborhoods in 6 states, how many were communicatable, owned TV's, or owned TV's that work? The journalist, Mr. Sam Stein, went to Dartmouth College and surely I do not see him going to A poor neighborhood(s) in multiple cities and states. So I think he is creatively misleading the public.

"Poor white people are freaked out by Wright," said Smith. "It has hurt [Obama] bad West Virginia and Kentucky. You can go down the Ohio River and it is ugly. ... black it is about the god damn American comment. ..."

((( "These are the people who wrapped themselves in the flag for George W. Bush. It is not about him being black it is about the god damn American comment. This is not a religious thing it is about patriotism." )))

This type would never vote for Obama in the first place, so why even take their vote into account? I'm sure they'd find a similar excuse to question Hillary's patriotism if the need arose.

I completely agree with your assessment. They were not going to vote for him anyway, and if they are going to use the Rev. Wright as an excuse then there you go. I just dont understand what they are so afraid of, this man's whole life he has brought people together, and to make this assertion that he is anyway shares the views of his former pastor is a complete contradiction to evrything his life stands for..

Americans get horseshit for government because they are lazy sheeple. They take no interest in what their elected officals does or don’t do. Do you think the Media aren't pushing their bias...please? If folks take, a minute to breathe this is all media driven. The media plays it like a game…who’s up whose down minute by minute. That's why people who have a brain cell that functions...don't care what anyone has to say, not the media, the church, the family, or the psycho folks on websites(No matter how much fun to visit and give a meaningless comment on), they think for themselves. It's up to you to do you do the research go see the candidate speak if possible, read as much as you can that is not slanted and you yourself will find the person that appeals to you and your issues. Nothing is perfect and no one person will fill all of your requirements. So you do have to choose the lesser of two evils, no matter who it is until we invent a better process. But that doesn’t mean after you vote it’s over and you don’t stop keeping an eye on ‘em. Maybe this is the time the voters will wake up and stay invested in the government and its policies.

Good point! I think this is what Obama is saying that we have to have more citizens involved in the day to day process of government. Voting is just one part of good government.

This is a joke right?
Dick Durbin, the guy who hasn't said anything for the last month?
You all remember last month right, before even Texas and Ohio had voted, that would be when good ol Dick told Clinton she should drop out of the campaign.
Don't go changing, Dick!

Wright's view is that it is better to have dialogue with Farrakhan than not, and also that Farrakhan has evolved. Talking to someone doesn't mean you agree, but it's better than fighting. DIplomacy over war, I guess you could say. Food for thought in these troubled times.

In case you didn't know, Wright was smeared

Actually the esteemed reverend did the smearing. America invented aids to kill black people?
America has done far more for it's minority populations then any other nation. We have black churches but would not condone white institutions. We do not have a caucasion college fund
or a white history month.

Ok, you must not have ANY knowledge of history. We have black churces and colleges because black people could not attend white churches and colleges. It was called segregation. There's no white history month because EVERY month is white history month. Most black colleges are now referred to as "Historically Black Colleges and Universities" because they are now becoming more racially mixed, but it acknowledges the fact that these schools were the only ones that black people could attend until the 1960s. Just read a little history which includes some black history and you'd know this stuff because your post sounds pretty pathetic.

wow....you sound just like Patrick J. Buchanan...Your ignorance is frightning. The reason that the Black Church was started is because Blacks were not allowed to go to white churches. During slavery, Blacks weren't considered worthy enough to learn of the good news of Jesus. Slaves had to sneak and listen to what was being taught in white churches and pass it along to other slaves. When slavery was ended churches remained segregated, much like they are today...Most people go to their family church, I go to the church of my great grandmother. Furthermore, It isn't like whites aren't allowed in "Black"churches, They are just called Black churches because they tend to be in the innercity and have a majority Black membership. I would get into the history of historically black colleges with you, but you seem a little slow, so we will just go with one step at a time

This young Senator, this nobody from nowhere out of nowhere has definitely caused a stir. I'm loving it!

I bet you do. It keeps the heat of the old man and his "gaffes". Soon enough the media will take it's focus off the Clinton-Obama campaigns and focus on the two candidates. That's when McSame better load up on some vitamin A because those tired old brain cells that can't keep facts straight now will really be put to the test and scrutinized. We'll see the "maverick" slough off to his recliner where he can reminisce about the good old days in the war. (No viagra necessary, war talk gets the geezers blood flowin'!)

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 04:55 PM on 04/02/2008

Really, which good old days of war would Senator McCain reminisce about?
I support Obama, but I have enough respect for myself and Senator McCain not to make such assinine statements.
McCain only the other day made a statement directly knocking Bush's comments about wishing he could take part in the romantic battle in Afghanistan.
McCain: "Only a fool or a fraud sentimentalizes the mercilous reality of war!"

Change your ways, changeisontheway.

You'll end up liking yourself a lot more.

The followers of hype and rhetoric may not know but Wright & Farrakhan went to Libya to meet Qaddafi, Obama’s church gave Farrakhan a “lifetime achievement award.”
Obama said “I can no more disown him than I can disown the black community. I can no more disown him than I can my white grandmother who helped raise me, a woman who sacrificed again and again for me, a woman who loves me as much as she loves anything in this world, but a woman who once confessed her fear of black men who passed by her on the street, and who on more than one occasion has uttered racial or ethnic stereotypes that made me cringe.”
Jesse Jackson made similar comments in 1993 as Obama's GrandMa. According to Chicago Sun Times, he said, “We must face the No. 1 critical issue of our day. It is youth crime in general and black-on-black crime in particular. There is nothing more painful to me at this stage in my life than to walk down the street and hear footsteps and start thinking about robbery. Then look around and see somebody white and feel relieved. After all we have been through just to think we can’t walk down our own streets, how humiliating.”
As students of law, both Obama and I know the difference between the "freedom of speech" and "hateful speech." It is the arrogant followers who need to see the difference.
Thank you

If you look into the facts, Wright is not given to hate speech. Anger, yes.

Read this article by the New Yorker. Unless you're just a shill, of course.

This is a GREAT article, djelimon. Actually talks about how Wright and Farrakhan had somewhat of a competetive relationship and that Wright wanted to get black men to see the benefits of Christianity instead of the Nation of Islam.

Hateful speech? Then why do Haggee, Robertson and Parsley get a free ride. For that matter what about Limbaugh and O'Reilly?

Here is the truth- Rev Wright is black - the rest are white. It is a double standard and you know it.!

Opus007, thank you for your response. Whoever plays the race card, including all you mentioned and many more of those who divide this great nation and hard working people of all walk are DEAD WRONG.

I didn't see any comments about Wright giving Farrakhan a "lifetime achievement award", is it because of their race, I hope not. They are as bad the those mentioned above.

Regards.

I think Fox News overplayed their hand and did it too early in the election cycle. A lot of people are so sick of hearing it that they tune it out. When the republicans start at it again the voters will have become so tired if the whole issue it will have lost its effectiveness. Also the 527's on the democratic side will have had time to counter it.

The people who so upset that they won't vote for Obama probably wouldn't have anyway and some of them will come around when they see and hear more from him.

It was played so much- especially that one phrase "Our chickens have come home to roost". I found myself thinking - he is right. I Our 20 years of botched foreign policy has created a lot of enemies for us. The truth hurts sometimes. But no one wants to say it because it could be considered "unpatriotic". Vigorous participation in our goverment makes our country stronger. Putting on a lapel pin, slapping a "Support Our Troops" ribbon on the car and giving the train wreck known as the Bush Administration free reign have got us where we are today. Over 4,000 dead, tens of thousands maimed, trillions in debt, sky high energy prices is what we got. With the extra bonus of being more unsafe than ever.

We can blame Bush and his Republican roadblock in congress but if we really want change in this country we have to accept our part of the blame also. Hillary and McCain are just cogs in the wheel of the military -oil machine. (phrase borrowed from another HuffPo blogger- thanks) We have a historic election coming up and it is our duty to vote out those who are serving not our citizens -but special interests at the expense of citizens. I'm backing Obama 100%!

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 04:57 PM on 04/02/2008

And the media didn't have the integrity to bring up the context in which that chickens quote was made ~ it might kill their ability to play the sound bites over and over and then pretend to have a serious discussion about it.

The media are the real culprits starting with Fox and going to ABC and then to the MSNBC bunch.

It was just what anyone who is biased against African Americans needed to start a frenzy of fear and hate and misinformation.

I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere, but "the chickens are coming home to roost" is what Malcolm X was roasted in the press for saying after, I believe, the assassination of John F. Kennedy. I suspect that Rev. Wright was aware of it, since he's old enough to remember the incident well. M-X had a point and so did Wright.

I from Kentucky, so many of the politicians in this state are so backwater. He is race baiting the poorly eductated rural white folk in this state. As someone has stated some people will vote soley on race, but there are more progressive parts of the state like louisville, lexington and northern ky.

Please, get your hands on a copy of the 2007 book by Joe Bageant, 'Deer Hunting With Jesus.'

The author speaks to the dilemma of poor whites who have been effectively disinfranchised because of their poverty (subtext--AND because of individuals who are greedy, politically powerful nonblacks who continue to orchestrate paralyzing fear of most nonwhites for personal gain at all costs).

The wait was long and giving up hard earned money for tshirts not easy, but people waited and happily donated. Please excuse another Kentuckian (for Clinton) for presenting us all as ignorant hillbillies!

Jeez, I'm getting tired of this Rev. Wright thing. He's not on the ballot and, from what I've heard, church folk aren't always in lock step with their pastors, reverends, priests, etc. I think people are a lot more tolerant of other people's views. The Clintonistas may try to make a big deal of this but I don't think it'll work for them.

What totally blows my mind is how the media have given Hill a pass on her Bosnia "mis spoke". It was a lie! It was another lie in a long string of lies. I should think the good people of middle America would have a much bigger problem with another liar sitting in the Oval Office. That is something the Republicans will definitely make an issue of if she's the general election candidate.

Don't worry, it all will come back to haunt her. She will make an ass out of herself again soon. Associating with the far right wing is just trying to get the Republicans to cross over and vote for her to keep her in the race, but it will end up bad for her.

@Kato1,
I could just see the clips of her lie being played over and over again, and then spliced with Bill's endorsement of McCain. The republicans would have a field day with this. The republicans would crush Hillary and Bill with their own footage of themselves.

I don't think Hillary is getting a pass on Bosnia. Sure, they're not playing the clip every thirty seconds like they did with Pastor Wright, but it's received plenty of coverage, and has done enormous damage to Hillary's campaign. If you look at the national polls, she's been losing ground every day since she "misspoke." Meanwhile, Obama has long since shaken off any negative polling caused by the Wright controversy.

When all is said and done, history might say the Obama campaign found a new way to the White House. Clinton slogs along with the old play book while Obama has this tricky new stratagy. The weird and wonderful thing is, it seems he has figured out a way to skip the need to win over bigoted white southerners. This election is going to replay the Civil war. This time we do not need the poor southern bigot. I feel for them, i do. They are ignorant and have voted against their own interests for over one-hundred years. Read Howard Zinn's _People's History of the United States_. The richly ironic part is an Obama White House will be really good for poor people... white and black, north and south. The south might have to heal after the election. Their choice.

Tulka2 - you are so right. The racial fear that has gripped the south, and the Republicam lies that have manipulated the less educated public into ignoring their own self interests is nothing less than tragic. Never before has our divide in education been so pushed to the forefront of the public discourse. It really has no color barrier, but boy does it have an economic one.

We may never know Obama's appeal to the Democrats in the south, not until the general election. With 18% of the white Mississippi vote for Clinton being self-professed Republicans responding to Rush Limbaugh's campaign for chaos the statistics are , at best, skewed. Again, even the other side has been convinced to not follow their own interests as Mississippi voters are now not allowed to cross back over to the Republican roles in order to vote in a very important run-off. Karma.....

Zinn is a genius!
But honestly, lets actually see what Obama accomplishes before we make grandiose predictions.
Our government is specifically designed as to make any change, happen slowly.
Obama should get us moving in the right direction, but it is going to take more than 4 or even 8 years to get this country back.
