Larry King Baseball

Larry King was recently named one of GQ's 25 "Most Whipped Husbands," but his devotion to his family doesn't stop at his wife Shawn: King, who coaches his 9-year old son Chance's baseball team, recently got so crazed in a fight with an umpire that he got kicked off the Beverly Hills Little League field.

The New York Observer's Spencer Morgan reports:

"[Mr. King] was making a fool out of himself as a manager on the field, talking in the middle of the field in the middle of plays," reported a source close to the action.

According to this source, Mr. King was told by the umpire in question to "regroup" and calm himself, and he did not respond well to this. Rather, the informant said, he continued arguing and was then relegated to the bleachers, where he continued to make noise, and was finally forced to watch the game from the outfield's periphery.

Read Morgan's entire report here.

Son? Wouldn't it have to be, like, great, great grandson?

That's funny, come to think of it. When I was nine, my great grandfather was about 75. (What can I say, Southern Baptists start young.)

To this Dad the guy sounds first rate. Can't you just imagine how many other parents in
Beverly Hills volunteered their time to coach Little league? I can just see the assisants video
taping the game. All the Best you and your family Mr King.

Larry, Larry, Larry . . .

It''s just a game my friend, a children's game, the purpose of which is teaching good sportsmanship, cooperation, the value of hard work, self-improvement, win or lose, etc.

I know you love your children like any good parent.

But this is why you need to set a good example, win or lose, and teach this important lesson: Things don't always go our way; the world isn't always fair, nonetheless, we live by our principles, conduct ourselves with dignity, showing respect for all, even when we might thing they don' "deserve" it at the time. Because our conduct is not about the charactor of others, its about our character, and our children are watching and imitating, especially how we react to adversity.

Take a deep breath, and then it's probably a good idea to talk to the kids about this. Don't you think Larry?

The great virtue of humanity is that we are capable of rising above who we are to come much closer to who we could be, our better selves. It is not an easy journey, but what better example could we set for our children.

Shalom to all.

Oh come on people
Larry is from Brooklyn
That is how guys from any neighborhood are and Larry is a neighborhood guy.
They are real men not suburban sissies.

Bullies, all?!
Not in the New York I know but perhaps that of tv cop show fantasy.
Unlike the stereotype most New Yorkers are rational and even...kind.

Yeah, we know what you city guys do: resort to guns and blow away people who don't agree with you, right? Come on. As Americans, we comprise a supposedly civil society of laws, not of men. Do you teach your child to follow the rules, or to bully your way over, under, around and through them? Eventually children raised the latter way have a very hard time in society. And BTW, It's not unusual even for suburban dads to be thrown out of ballgames. It is embarrassing for all concerned.
Macho men. Bunch of spoiled little boys who have to win at all costs. Let it go.

"Larry is a neighborhood guy."

Hah! Good one! Now, in case you missed it, Larry's neighborhood is...

...Beverly Hills!

I guess he gave up on the "neighborhood," long ago.

LARRY KING IS OF A CERTAIN AGE, MAKING IT PROBABLE THAT AN MRI WOULD REVEAL A BRAIN THAT BEARS SOME RESEMBLANCE TO SWISS CHEESE.

GIVE HIM A BREAK, ESPECIALLY SINCE HE IS OLDER THAN WHAT THE KID'S GRANDFATHER SHOULD BE AND IS RULED BY A HIGH-TONED, BULL-WHIPPING WIFE.

Some of you misunderstand this article. It is not about Larry King so much as about crappy, asshole parents who interfere with their kids sports. Forget it is about King and think about how many times this happens with real people.

When I played Little League, there were no bleachers and parents were never encouraged to attend games. The stats and standings were published regularly in the local paper but my dad only coached me at home. As a result, the games were enjoyable because they were about US and not about our parents egos. There were no fights over umpires, no coaches got bloody noses. I did push a kid who said he should be captain because his dad was Sheriff. He was the worst kid on the team. If his dad would have attended it would have been uglier.

Sandlot baseball, schoolyard basketball were more fun than organized sports because there were no adults around to screw it up.

"Forget it is about King and think about how many times this happens with real people."

What? Larry King isn't real people?!?

Your point is understood: Adult egos can cause problems in youth sports. Happens all the time...too often, actually.

Larry Kind should be sentenced to serving as home plate umpire, once per week, and not at his son's games. Then maybe he'll understand what it's like to be put into a thankless job, where his every decision might be questioned.

There is not too much inside Larry King's brain. He is just lucky to have won a "lottery" since I am sure just about anyone can run a show like his. Just look at all the talk shows and talk radio where he came from. If one walked in the deepest recesses of Larry King's mind, I doubt if you would get your ankles wet.

To waste evryone's time to place a post about his behavior is beyond me.
