WALLINGFORD, Pa. — Sen. Barack Obama said Wednesday he would give Al Gore, a Nobel prize winner, a major role in an Obama administration to address the problem of global warming.

At a town-hall meeting, Obama was asked if he would tap the former vice president for his Cabinet to handle global warming.

"I would," Obama said. "Not only will I, but I will make a commitment that Al Gore will be at the table and play a central part in us figuring out how we solve this problem. He's somebody I talk to on a regular basis. I'm already consulting with him in terms of these issues, but climate change is real. It is something we have to deal with now, not 10 years from now, not 20 years from now."

Since leaving the White House, Gore has gone on to become one of the world's leading voices for combating the greenhouse gases blamed for global warming. His work earned him a share of the Nobel last year.

Popular among Democrats, Gore is perhaps the single most coveted endorsement up for grabs in the long-running competition between Obama and rival Hillary Rodham Clinton.

The relationship between Gore and the Clintons became strained after Gore limited Bill Clinton's campaigning on his behalf in the 2000 presidential race which elected George W. Bush.

Obama said he would use Gore to help forge a cap-and-trade system for carbon emissions designed to lower pollution.

The Illinois senator cautioned that such a system could mean an increase in electricity bills from power companies that rely on coal-burning, and that some of the money generated from a cap-and-trade system may be used in the beginning to help lower income or fixed income customers with those bills.

He also called on individuals to do their part to lower energy consumption.

"All of us are going to have to change our habits. We are a wasteful culture," he said.

Using compact fluorescent light bulbs, energy efficient appliances, and unplugging power chargers when they're not in use are relatively simple solutions, he said.

"Those kinds of simple steps, if everybody takes them, can drastically reduce our energy consumption."

Check- out his name " John Kemp' probably related to Jack Kemp of Reagan Administration fame; he was one of the ones who helped sell ' supply side' Economics, remember.
We all know how well that turned out.
Now more than ever is the old name the Repugs used to be known as appropiate in describing their method of governing; THE KNOW NOTHINGS.
That Crew hasn't had a good idea on how to run a country since Ike built the Interstate Highway System.

In a general election matchup in Florida, McCain closely trails Clinton 42 percent to 44 percent but McCain leads Obama, who would be the first black president, 46 percent to 37 percent, according to the poll.

I suspect the senior citizen crowd will be the last one's to sign on to the Obama campaign. But in the general election, Obama should be able demonstrate he's the preferable candidate over McCrazy and many of them will come around.

I bet just getting the democratic nomination will improve Obama's "electability" among that demographic.

I would hope that which ever candidate became the next POTUS had the insight to bring former VP Gore on board in at least an advisory position of topics of the environment, alternative fuels, and other problems of that nature facing our nation and our world today....

It is the right and brilliant thing to do, as hardly anyone I can think of would be in a better position then VP Gore to bring attention to these subjects.... I would seriously question the judgment of a candidate who did not consider seeking the best person to consult with... posted 04/02/2008 at 16:13:56

Yeah, a person who consumes more energy in his "home" in one month than an average Tennessean does in a year.

He'd certainly be my first choice.

But you know what? Algore shoud invest more in "calorie credits" than he does in "energy credits" by his current "look."

From your posts, it's pretty clear you don't care if what you're saying is true but for the benefit of others who may not know better than to disbelieve whatever you post...

...go to CBS.com for the 60- Minutes interview from this Sunday to see Gore explain that he has retrofitted his home for conservation and added solar panels, his house uses less energy than probably anybody posting here.

Except you John, can't beat a cave for energy efficiency.

Again Barack was not my first choice but I have to say he's run a great and smart campaign and his comment that we need to deal with Global Climate change now not 10 or 20 years from now and that we need to change our habits, could not be more spot on !! We ARE indeed a wasteful culture !!

Al Gore will be an enormous asset !

All of a sudden everyone (Obama?) cares about the environment? Give me a break. Where was everyone when Al Gore first brought this all up? They all said nonsense to his views on global warming, but he hung tough. I'm so proud of him. Al Gore should be President, period! Obama makes me sick, playing both sides of the fence. One minute he won't give up Wright and the next minute he says if he hadn't retired he would have left the church. What a phony. Of course, he's arrogant enought to say he'd hire Al Gore. Al Gore never had to play both sides of the fence and he's not a phony. He's such a liar. I wish Al Gore would run for President. He'd win it, hands down!

Listen,I can't speak for everyone but yes I cared about the environment even before Al Gore brought it to the world stage. To my knowledge the ones decrying and denying his message were and still are the far right.

I suggest you not go by Huffpo headlines as they can be,to say the least, misleading. If one reads the article the word hire was never used by Barack.I don't see how one could construe Barack as being arrogant for wanting Al Gore to work with him on this issue. I'm really sorry you dwell so much in negativity and cynicism that you refuse to see this as a plus.

As for your wish that Al Gore run for president,he's stated unequivocally it's not going to happen.Dwelling in the past is not healthy.Gore has moved on and so can you.

The Future is NOW!!!

Once again, the headline sensationalizes the story. Senator Obama did NOT say he would 'hire' Al Gore. He said he would give him "a major role in an Obama administration to address the problem of global warming." Did you read the complete article or just the headline before you started typing?

I always thought Gore's distancing himself from the Clinton Administration was a big mistake. The Clinton Administration was very popular when Clinton left office. Gore didn't take any of the credit from the things they had achieved. He shot himself in the foot by listening to the Bob Shrums and other stupid Democratic handlers who advised him that Clinton was "spoiled goods." They were wrong.

-----CLINTON SLEEZE FATIGUE WILL INVIGORATE GOP, DISPIRIT DEMOCRATS AND SINK DEMOCRATIC TICKET-----

-----OBAMA/EDWARDS TO WIN-----

It is possible that Senator Clinton is the best candidate. However, even though many may like the policies that Senator Clinton proposes, they should also consider her record, just as Senator Clinton insists.
.
The last Clinton Administration, when faced with the fact that protection rackets where assaulting, torturing and murdering people with poison and radiation, chose to avoid its responsibilities to incarcerate the criminals and to protect the citizenry.
.
Instead, they made a deal with the criminal gang stalker protection rackets to leave them alone and to consequently abandon the citizenry.
.
Do we want a President who sells out the citizenry for votes?
.
Do we want a President who sends a "crime does pay" message to society?
.
Would you vote for a President who signed nonaggression deals with the KKKlan or the Nazi party? Gangs that torture with poison and radiation are much like the KKKlan and Nazi Party.
.
We do not need a sellout President. We need a principled leader President.
.
If you are one of the few who do not know what the above refers to, do a web search for “gang stalking” to see the tip of the dirtberg. Please do it before you decide to reply to my post. Here let me make it easy for you: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=%22gang+stalking%22.
