WALLINGFORD, Pa. — Sen. Barack Obama said Wednesday he would give Al Gore, a Nobel prize winner, a major role in an Obama administration to address the problem of global warming.

At a town-hall meeting, Obama was asked if he would tap the former vice president for his Cabinet to handle global warming.

"I would," Obama said. "Not only will I, but I will make a commitment that Al Gore will be at the table and play a central part in us figuring out how we solve this problem. He's somebody I talk to on a regular basis. I'm already consulting with him in terms of these issues, but climate change is real. It is something we have to deal with now, not 10 years from now, not 20 years from now."

Since leaving the White House, Gore has gone on to become one of the world's leading voices for combating the greenhouse gases blamed for global warming. His work earned him a share of the Nobel last year.

Popular among Democrats, Gore is perhaps the single most coveted endorsement up for grabs in the long-running competition between Obama and rival Hillary Rodham Clinton.

The relationship between Gore and the Clintons became strained after Gore limited Bill Clinton's campaigning on his behalf in the 2000 presidential race which elected George W. Bush.

Obama said he would use Gore to help forge a cap-and-trade system for carbon emissions designed to lower pollution.

The Illinois senator cautioned that such a system could mean an increase in electricity bills from power companies that rely on coal-burning, and that some of the money generated from a cap-and-trade system may be used in the beginning to help lower income or fixed income customers with those bills.

He also called on individuals to do their part to lower energy consumption.

"All of us are going to have to change our habits. We are a wasteful culture," he said.

Using compact fluorescent light bulbs, energy efficient appliances, and unplugging power chargers when they're not in use are relatively simple solutions, he said.

"Those kinds of simple steps, if everybody takes them, can drastically reduce our energy consumption."

More and more, HuffPo is becoming the Fox of Liberal News. This headline is just like all the rest. Obama SNEAKS off to meet Edwards. It stands against everything Progressives hold dear and wish was different with MSM.

HuffPo criticizes the MSM for doing the same thing. It's pretty hypocritical and I think true progressives like myself are turned off by it.

Clean up the sensational headlines, HuffPo.

Your comment might make some sense if it were posted on a "sensational" story. There are a lot to choose from. This is not one of them.

My comment was in response to another post, and I posted it in the wrong place. .Obama SNEAKS off to meet Edwards was the "This headline is like all the rest" that I was speaking about. The comment mine was in response to was further down the line, but thanks for your input.

This item is not an editorial by Huffpost. Huffpost is merely reporting a news item. How does that make them like Fox? I see the like of JohnKemp and Vlkyrie with their divergent viewpoints appearing daily. Huffpost is evolving into truly a meeting place of ideas. Oh! I used the word "evolve". Bad boy! I just now invited more attacks in an effort to defend the Po.

What ever you want to say about Al Gore, agree or disagree he at least has some serious credentials. Obama is like a kid invited to a birthday party and the next thing you know he starts acting like HE is the birthday boy!!

McSurgent, you're describing Bush! Could you explain how Obama is acting like the birthday boy? Especially since he is being "invited" to become POTUS?

What, by answering a reporter's direct question? Or let me guess -- you just read the headline.

I've been keeping an open mind about Obama, but his claim that he'd put Gore in a central position regarding global warming is not good news. McCain is also concerned about Global Warming, but I'm pretty sure he won't be adding Gore to his cabinet. He won't be adding Madonna and Sting to the cabinet either.

Are you freaking comparing Al Gore to Madonna and Sting? Hey, nothing wrong with Madonna and Sting, I love their music, I even went to a The Police concert a couple of months ago, great show.

But to compare Al Gore - a Nobel Prize winner with decades of experience in public service, including US Senator and VP - with Madonna and Sting is just absurd.

Take your lame take somewhere else.

Why doesn't Obama just hire P.T. Barnum.

Giving Al Gore any power is very dangerous. It would result in higher taxes, more regulation and bigger government, all for a hoax.

Get over yourselves Libs, you can't change or control the climate.

When will you Libs learn that this whole global warming hoax is not about science. It's about pushing global socialism and punishing successful countries like the U.S.

Because, as the recent clusterfuck implosion involving unregulated or lightly-regulated financial instruments has shown us, more regulation is a terrible idea. Really? You conservatives use the phrase "big government" so selectively that it doesn't mean anything any more. Farming subsidies, bailouts of sleazy brokerage houses, wiretaps on everyone's phones for undisclosed reasons -- you LOVE that kind of big government. But any kind of federally-funded aid to anyone disadvantaged for any reason? "Government's too big!" Just nonsense.

Heh, that is ridiculous. Gore/Obama would be acceptable but Obama has a lot to learn before he is qualified to be President. If he is the nominee, I'll try to hold my nose and vote for him, BUT I WOULD MUCH RATHER SEE THE DEMS GO TO GORE AND ASK HIM TO BE THE NOMINEE AND HE WOULD HAVE A MUCH BETTER CHANCE OF BEATING MCCAIN. He has been through the Republicans crap before, and many people are still angry and would turn out because they feel he was robbed in 2000.

I was at an event the other day, and I heard a rabid Democrat I have known for forty years say that Obama is arrogant, as are his supporters, and that his minister is AS RACIST ANTI-WHITE AS IS ANY KLAN MEMBER ANTI-BLACK AND HIS SUPPORT FOR HIM, WHILE HE THREW HIS GRANDMOTHER, WHO HAD LOVED HIM, PROTECTED HIM, SACRIFIED FOR HIM, AND CARED FOR HIM WAS TREATED LIKE EXPENDABLE TRASH. She said that rather than vote for him, she would stay home and pray for the country.

I think that despite the giddy, almost fawning nature of his supporters, OBAMA IS NOT ELECTABLE. THE PUKES ARE GOING TO SWIFT BOAT HIM, BUT IN THIS CASE WITH THE TRUTH TEN TIMES WORSE THAN WHAT KERRY GOT, AND HE SHALL NOT BE ELECTED.

"The relationship between Gore and the Clintons became strained after Gore limited Bill Clinton's campaigning on his behalf in the 2000 presidential race which elected George W. Bush."

Nope. The relationship between WJC and Gore was apparently strained when Bill Clinton recklessly had an affair with Lewisnky, endangering Gore and the Democratic party's prospects in 2000. Endanger it (the scandal/impeachment circus/fatigue) did: http://tinyurl.com/yobqdk

Second, the relation between HRC and Gore war probably strained the moment WJC and Gore were sworn into office (with substantial help from Gore in winning the 1992 election) and HRC attempted to grab power she wasn't elected to have. Of course, she failed in her major official initiative, namely the healthcare initiative.

In other (minor) official initiatives, she came under sniper fire in Tuzla, Bosnia, as we well know: http://tinyurl.com/2sw63o

"new carbon INDUSTRY"

---------------

well it could become twisted into that. all the more reason to not have emissions trading. I sure hope they don't go that route, and americans will need to be vigilant about it.

it really kind of defeats the purpose of trying to eliminate (or lower) emissions when you turn those emissions into a commodity to be traded.

That's a straw man. No one has crowned "this guy the saviour of the world". Gore is a good man, a very smart man, and trying to address a major problem facing our planet.

Why do you guys have to make up stuff to make a point, even if you did have a point?

He did not say he will get the VP spot. Gore and some environmental concerns may be on target
and we need to clean up our act or pay for it later. Our health is at stake here. We are the only
country that is the least bit concerned about this problem. I am against it if they think they can
tax us into oblivion while letting off the corporations again. That would not work. But I am sure,
Obama has a plan, he did promise change. He is still the best bet!
