Tonight, NBC is throwing a party to celebrate Keith Olbermann's 5th anniversary at "Countdown" — and it just happens to be in CNN's backyard. NBC head honcho Jeff Zucker, NBC News president Steve Capus and NBC News senior VP/MSNBC overseer Phil Griffin are hosting the party at none other than Landmarc in the Time Warner Center — a stone's throw from where former NBC-er and current Olbermann challenger Campbell Brown will be broadcasting live.

A little uptown for this particular gang, given how publicly they all came together in midtown earlier this year in their collective home at 30 Rock, no? Wouldn't it make more sense just to find a spot in midtown within walking distance, so that maybe even former MSNBC GM and now 9 p.m. host Dan Abrams could attend? Well sure — unless you're a perennial third-place network trying to send a message to your nearest competitor, on whom you just happen to have been gaining steadily in recent months. Surely the mass exodus up to Landmarc can't just be the spaghetti carbonara (which is apparently delicious, according to a CNN staffer who's actually eaten there)?

Indeed it is not. "We thought it would be fun to hold Keith's party in the building where the third place 8 p.m. cable news show is produced," said MSNBC spokesperson Jeremy Gaines. Gaines is referring to CNN's "Election Center," which Brown recently took over after returning from maternity leave. In March, "Countdown" beat "Election" center, so Gaines is technically correct — though for the entire first quarter of 2008, "Election Center" was ranked 6th among cable news shows in the 8 p.m. timeslot, where Olbermann ranked 20th. In March, Olbermann averaged 1,080,000 total viewers and and 382,000 viewers in the demo, while Brown averaged 995,000 total viewers and 325,000 in the demo. That number was slightly higher than the average for "Countdown's" quarter (1,033,000), which an MSNBC press release said was Olbermann's best-ever. It should be noted that the numbers for Brown — under 100,000 total viewers behind — represented her first-ever.

The upshot? CNN and MSNBC are duking it out for second place after Fox — which remains the clear leader — taking it to a bare-knuckles fight on a timeslot-per-timeslot basis, in total viewers and in the demo. Olbermann beat Brown, but CNN won 8 p.m. in March overall. CNN won the demo in the first quarter of 2008...but MSNBC and CNN tied in the demo for March. While CNN is still in second place, MSNBC continues to breathe down its neck — and tonight, that breath will be so close it might even waft up to CNN, with the faint smell of spaghetti carbonara.

CNN declined to comment on the matter. But who knows, maybe in 5 years Brown will be celebrating her anniversary at the Rainbow Room.

Just loved Keith's investigation of Snow's claim that Bush said "stay the course" only 8 times. Keith's series of Bush uttering those very same words time after time after time after time... was if not for the tragedy of the situation would laugh a former press secretary and, indeed Bush, himself right off the world stage.

MSNBC, they wear lovely ties and suits with Keith's being the loveliest of all.

Keith Olbermann is a lot better that anyone on CNN if I have to listen to a bigot like Lou Dobbs it is time listen to the Radio. Jack Cafferty is the only one on CNN I watch.

I have completely turned off Blitzer and Dobbs for Matthews and Olbermann. If CNBC could get Jack Cafferty there would be no reason at all to watch CNN.

FOX = McCain
CNN = Clinton
MSNBC = Obama

I enjoy Countdown. The media needs a guy who will say what he feels and back up what he says.

I enjoy it too. It's nice to see a sports commentator try to act like he knows something about politics.

LOL, actually do remember Oberman as a sports reporter in the California area..(think he still hangs on to some of those gigs and IS an avid sporters/knows it well and etc however you obviously MISS the intellect that gets displayed on far reaching subjects such as politics of which he IS well informed. He has a vast back 'grounded" education and it shows (perhaps too obtuse for some lesser educated/lesser read/etc...) Reminds me of Dick Cavett...who too use to be so out in front that too often went too far over the heads of audiences but he held a firm grasp and an ability to cut to the quick of various matters and hit the marks right on !!!
Sorry is he is too much for you or similars...he remains a feast for others and truly enjoy and ready to gorge upon more even when we do NOT agree, he gives pause and makes folks think causing some to shrink evidently when face with some of the brutalities of facts and truths and just plain logic and basic common sense !!!

Not only is Olbermann self-important, but he has lost yet another viewer. I seriously can't watch a prick that reminds me of Rush Limbaugh or Bill O'Reilly. I gasp at typing this, but Fox News has been more fair and balanced this political season than MSNBC and I think that might be why their numbers are so high.

CNN is the fairest of the progressive channels, and I am tired of stuffed suits with Ken hair trying trying to manipulate my vote.

I bet if Olberman was openly praising and favorable towards Clinton,you'd change your tune.As for the image of self importance..who cares?If he's right,he's right.There are alot of intellectual snobs out there ( self important) but he doesn't strike me like that.

The last time I could watch was during the whole Obama passport flap. He treated it like an international incident. He and his crony list of shills were so pathetic it was funny. His show is a stupid as O'Reilly. Completely unbalanced...and boring.

You know I have to agree, MSNBC played that live coverage for what 3 hours, while neither fox, CNN, or the networks even covered it. Then the kicker before they went to the new episode of Lockdown or whatever, Kieth was all over the fact that someone who worked there had once been in the Clinton Administration.

I mean the lean was obvious through out but Keith was almost licking his chops thinking he was getting fresh anti clinton meat served up raw.

I use to like countdown, hardball, and msnbc, but this election has just turned them into propaganda.

its not only sad, but kinda scary.

Don't fall into that trap.Seems we base our opinions on who is biased and who is not soley on who we tend to favor,on our own bias,rather than listening to WHY this or that one leans to one or another in thier coverage.Olberman has been on the money about Obama and Clinton and Bush as well.That's not based on Bias,but on facts.Olberman seems to me to be a very sharp ,very observant person.BTW,I'd like to see some kind of peace treaty between Olberman and O'Rielly lol maybe they can both work together on some important issue..If Obama is willing..why not Olberman ? calling attention to "Jessicas law" would be a good one to work on together.It will bring newfound respect to liberals on at least one social issue.

I had stopped watching it shortly before that. I adored Countdown, it was appointment TV for me, and I'm hoping after Nov I'll be able to watch it again, but I can't stomach the Obama Express anymore. The entire show is dedicated to bashing Clinton. It's nauseating.

One would have hoped to become the number 2 spot in the rating war, a news organization would relay on intelligent commentary and reporting, instead of turning into a fox like news organization for the liberals.

But when money is the bottom line, its bout ratings and not journalism.

Edward R Murrow's corpse spins nightly at the end of every broadcast of Countdown.

After learning Mr. Olberman who is about forty eight-years old and lives with his girlfriend who is about twenty-two years old (she could easily be his daughter), I realized where his hate for Senator Clinton comes from. He is afraid of women in power, that is why he is dating a woman 26 years his junior so that he can control her. I stopped watching him after his women hating comments, he just turns my stomach!

Libel, kiga. Back up your bullshit with even one link, just one. Post something to support your baseless accusations.

Are you the moral arbiter who decides who can, and cannot date someone else? So shut up about his private life, it's none of your goddamn business.

As for Olbermann being a misogynist, back it up, or go crawl back under Bill O'Reilly's ass.

Olbermann has become such a monstrous ego that he's really hard to watch. Put him in the same room with Chris Matthews and it's like an episode of Wayne's World. Cable news has become a dumping ground for bad journalists.

I'm thrilled for Keith! I'm even more thrilled that we all have Keith and Countdown. It's by far the best show on Cable. The smartest thing for NBC to do, would be to put it on NBC and get some real ratings! When you compare Keith Olbermann to someone like Joe Scarborough, Keith is the real deal. He's one of the very few members of the media who is telling us as it is. Scarborough is rude, overbearing and repulsive! Expand Countdown, and for heaven's sake, dump Scarborough! It is a huge improvement having him on from 3:00 am to 6"00 am in Southern California. We never have to watch him! Just keep him off the other MSNBC shows!

The reason KO constantly crows about his ratings is that he dominates the 18-34 market, which is where the biggest advertising money is spent.

But whenever I remember that most voters are watching Fox, I weep for my country.

This is why they've become the Obama station - for the 18-34 market.
There's also a nasty history between that defender of Florida's doctor killer, Joe Scarborough, and the Clintons.
Same Joe Scarborough who smeared the Clintons as race-baiters.
Same Joe Scarborough who tried to strip the NAACP of its tax-exempt status.
Same Joe Scarborough who attacked Al Gore as an "Al Sharpton Democrat."
It's all here and more:
